UnleashThePhones VideoCast- 808 PureView Special

Last night I joined the UnleashThePhones team in a videocast all about the 808, we were also joined by @MsJen who is completely in love with her 808 (at one point she started kissing it); there’re alot of great points made about the 808 from all prescriptives, plus I get a chance to clarify my stance on the 808, so check it out below:
*Note: It turns out that the issue with the one button upload to FB I mentioned is a Firmware bug, some 808 devices (in the US) have started receiving updates that fix the issue as well as the youtube share option.

I only got 5.5minutes into that vid, but a lot of great points were brought up. UI being a different experience for different minded people being a good one. Yes, Nokia Social is no where near as integrated as the competitors, but there is alternatives to these. Though I know, we all expect everything to be bitchen right out of the box when we buy into a smartphone or ecosystem.
The first app I bought for Android was PowerAmp, because HTC’s and Stock Android music players were atrocious, both in features and sound quality.
If smartphone are supposed to be as good as can be out of the box, should there be so much emphasis on apps? Conversely, is stock apps are generally mediocre, isn’t it okay that richer apps may b used instead?
We as consumers are still stuck in the time of flash based feature phones mentally, Believe. We got to get past that. Or good phones will forgetting a raw deal by reviewers.
@MsJen is the best she was spot on the things that make sense.
ALI so you can’t switch your lumia with the 808?

ok, send me file via BT with yout lumia
but browse the folders first
or use the fm transmitter
or take good quality photo
or tell me the hour from the standby screen
or use true multitask
or install an app outside the store
i could keep asking more features all day long
lol. That’s great and all but
“Lets text all day long with the virtual keyboard”
“Lets send tons of emails from the phone”
“Let’s browse the internet without frustration”
“Let’s not have the phone freeze randomly” (Bharadwaj’s unit seems to be playing up based on his tweets)
“lets not worry about installing apps outside app store because you already have tons of great useful apps in your app store. You know, ones that will never arrive in the other app store”.
“Let’s have contacts/emails/calendar entries syncing with ease, including online photo albums”
“Let’s have completely hands free texting through voice”
“Let’s have some inbuilt tethering that actually works properly”
“Let’s have built in barcode reader and music identifier”
I love 808 and I defend that phone too. I’m just trying to provide a bit of balance.
Your needs may be different to Ali’s needs. Just because Ali can’t switch from his Lumia doesn’t mean the 808 is bad and those features you mentioned are irrelevant. Only that Lumia is a better daily driver for Ali’s needs.
“Lets text all day long with the virtual keyboard”
YES POINT FOR WINDOWS, KB SUCKS BUT FIXED WITH LANDSCAPE KEYBOARD
“Lets send tons of emails from the phone”
HOTMAIL EXCHANGE WORKING LIKE A CHARM ON FP1 + SYNC CONTACTS, CALENDAR, NOTES, ETC..
“Let’s browse the internet without frustration”
POINT FOR WINDOWS
“Let’s not have the phone freeze randomly” (Bharadwaj’s unit seems to be playing up based on his tweets)
NEVER HAPPENS THAT, NOT EVEN ONCE SINCE I HAVE MY 808
“lets not worry about installing apps outside app store because you already have tons of great useful apps in your app store. You know, ones that will never arrive in the other app store”.
POINT FOR WINDOWS, BUT THATS NOT THE SYSTEM, IT IS NOKIA KILLING SYMBIAN
“Let’s have contacts/emails/calendar entries syncing with ease, including online photo albums”
ANSWERED WITH HOTMAIL EXCHANGE, AND NOW I HAVE SKYDRIVE
“Let’s have completely hands free texting through voice”
POINT FOR WINDOWS
“Let’s have some inbuilt tethering that actually works properly”
BUILTIN? WHY? JOIKUSPOT
“Let’s have built in barcode reader and music identifier”
BUILTIN? WHY? A TONS OF BARCODE READERS FOR SYMBIAN
“Let’s have built in barcode reader and music identifier”
AND SHAZAM
Yeah, bing music search is not available here (Finland), but shazam is amazing, has worked for me every single time.
Mariano, please be reasonable.
Regarding email, there’s a bug that prevents email from being received or sent intermittently.
Regarding freezing, bully for you, but you cannot deny that the phone does freeze for people randomly, myself included.
Regarding “syncing with ease,” you cannot even sync between two calendars! If you have one calendar, and your girlfriend has another EVEN ON ANOTHER SYMBIAN DEVICE, you cannot have the two sync! Insane.
Regarding Joikuspot, 1 it’s not built in, 2 it’s not in the store, 3 after you install it is crippled and doesn’t work everywhere, like usa for example.
Regarding opcode scanning, nobody scans those things anyway. Regarding Shazam, off topic, but I wish it existed for N9.
Must be tough having such a huge chip on yer shoulder
No chip, people shouldn’t be misled by you and your ilk. Welcome to facts.
there is vlingo built in.you can use it for hands free message.symbian is my heart and meego is my soul.wp sucks to the core.
+1
I put MS to the same category as Apple and Google (big brothers…?). Nokia is no longer a finnish copmpany.
The point I was hoping this video would make (and the one that Jen made quite clear) is that everyone has different uses for his phone, honestly the only features that are OS related (camera quality isn’t OS dependent) that I miss would be the always on Lock screen.
Browsing folder becomes redundant when your not sideloading apps (which lets be honest, is mostly used for pirating apps) personally I only used to use BT sharing to send/receive songs from/to my friends, which I gave up on and now use the Nokia Music store; sure I miss being able to send a picture to my friend as soon as I’ve taken it (I use email as a substitute now) but even then that’s not a deal breaker for me.
All in all the reason I use my Lumia is because for ME the Pros out weigh the Cons, and after all isn’t the reason for anything?
(for a list of pros check out Jay’s reply)
Try sending a 300MB file by bluetooth – BT file transfer is from a bygone era, when 32MB of storage was big. Hell, see how long it takes to send a 38MP photo from the 808.
USB OTG. It’s good to have options.
I gotta be honest, I do not see how USB OTG could ever go mainstream. It requires both carrying a separate device and dongle all the time, and the current implementations require you to be at least a little technically savvy.
Bluetooth sucks because it’s a pain in the ass and always feels unstable. The NFC stuff goes a long way. It’s still kind of slow.
High speed wireless is the future.
Switch memory cards.. lol. .!! Its instant, its free…. use it!!
Hate to point it out but the 808 doesn’t have hot swappable memory cards, you have to removed the battery to get to it
get Dukto
300MB takes about 10 minutes, and should work with several non-Lumia/iOS phones without any configuration or data plan usage from both parties (I only have/need 100MB a month). A full-res pic would take far less than 1 minute.
BT from the 32MB storage era would have been the far slower version 1 standard. It got better.
windows phone? when it bring all the functions that the old symbian had.
Let’s hope windows phone doesn’t bring over constant freezing.
Freezing is not a function. Although I’ve heard that NT has BSOD.
Really? Really?
Fun NT fact. WNT is 3 letters away from VMS.
I would have been happy if symbian could have brought all the old functions that symbian had!
At lost of good points made about travelling at around the 40 minutes mark.
If you’re moving around a lot, then you’re going to appreciate a phone that’s built like a tank. You’re going to want to take the best pictures you can of the sights that you see. You’re not going to always have access to computers to sync or back-up files, or a useable wi-fi or mobile data connection, but a good antenna that can use any standard network band will help. Fast GPS and pre-loaded maps will be useful. Being able to trust the phone not to use data and create a huge bill for you when roaming is absolutely essential. As is knowing that the battery will last several days if you’re careful. Things like a radio receiver, great audio quality, a bright screen in daylight and TV-out for use with hotel room screens will be a delightful bonus. Having something like an 808 or N8 may even encourage you to go out and explore unfamiliar places, knowing that you don’t need to carry separate maps or a camera.
But many people will simply not get £500/$700/whatever value out of an 808. Sightseeing can take time, money and effort, and doesn’t even appeal to some people at all. Games and web browsing may take a far higher priority. But, at the far end of this part of the spectrum, a ‘mobile’ phone really isn’t a necessary item. Just put the money towards better home appliances instead. Go with another phone, perhaps paired with an iPod Touch or some tablet if the phone is cheap, if you only commute but can’t bear to be away from your apps and media when your do so.
Mixing things up with an iPhone or Lumia or something similar for work days, and an N8 or 808 for days out makes a lot of sense, if this can be considered affordable.
I just ordered Black 808 but just few minutes ago I noticed few reds are in store by other reseller. What color do you prefer the most. Whats ur favourite: White, Black or Red ? Will I cancel my order and try to get the red one.. that is the one I have wanted to have but they have been vy rare in Finland, mostly black ones available.
get the color you want even if it means waiting more. I regret not getting the color I wanted for my N8 (wanted silver then got a black one)
Tnx Slayer.. I have always wanted to have red one but 808´s have been difficult to find here in Finland. I am a very happy N9 user but wanted to have the last Genuine Nokia phone too and to see Pureview in action. I would not spend my Euros on Lumia Pureview so 808 is the way to go. M$ Lumias will not have 41 mpix sensor and if it had, wd not buy it. Next device will be Jolla phone. I dont mind it the camera is not as good as 808 pureview, but definately gonna spend my Euros on their device.

Red one ordered from Gigantti. 555 euros, free delivery. I Can´t wait…
i bought an iPod Touch 4th gen because I got sick of missing out on all the great games the big game devs are putting out i iOS. (Capcom, Cave Co Ltd., Epic) as a sidearm to my N8-00. I would love to have an 808 as THE upgrade to my N8-00, but at over $600USD it’s just not in the cards. I could use my AT&T upgrade on a Lumia 900 (which I really liked my 20 minutes with), but with the WP8 Lumias around the corner, that would seem to be a poor decision.
And if anyone cares to know, no, I don’t like iOS, even after Jailbreak it and installing tweaks and mods. I hate that it kills my games with it’s task management. I hate that it cuts wifi when the lock screen comes on, and i hate that Safari won’t download jack diddly. Simply having these bases covered, WP7 and Symbian^3 are great.
808 is not for everybody, but its perfect for those of who need a Symbian device.
Funny how when people here bash symbian you dont see the likes of jay defending the 808 like you said now. Funny how jay never comments on that pages and tries to kinda even it out like now hey. But as soon as someone start pointing out the cons of wp they you all jump in defending
and btw ali you actually trying to point out that a feature like bluetooth isnt important just because you can email stuff is fucking attrocious!
Do you know there’s still millions of people without internet access? How are they supposed to share stuff on their fucking lumias? Email?
Say for instance a lucky guy in a poor country can buy a lumia phone cause he got a promotion at work. How is he supposed to share stuff if all the people around him doesnt have internet or lumia smartphones?
Plus jay and co. You seem to make that its symbians own fault that symbian is crap today. What if nokia used all that money on symbian and meego where would we be now huh? Fucking way better than belle fp1 and if they werent that nokia truelly deserved to die.
For me im gonna save up my money and buy me n pv 808 even though i get the vibe that mynokiablogs writters is trying to make it look that if we by the 808 we must be insane!
I thought wp8 lumia was bringing bluetooth? No?
if you honestly believe the bloggers here are paid to keep saying bad shit about symbian you could stay away.
yup, unfortunately right?
some people wait for nokia to die so they can laugh or run around claiming people who use iOS/Android products are spoiled rotten just because they have a different point of view, some stay and support nokia. each got their own role to play…
I have the understanding that most current Symbian^3 fans are mostly N8 users, followed by a mix of C7 & E7 users, then 603/701/700 in a ratio of 66%+15%+10%+9% the rest.
The camera was the focus followed by the connectivity features, and then OS. Most of us were there when it was S^3, we raved at Anna, and dreamed about how good Belle, Carla and Donna would be. Hell, we should have had the all Qt Dual Core Donna showing at Nokia World this year to be released Q1 2013. But it didn’t happen. And we’re pissed off. So much ability, potential swepped under the rug after years of neglect, just when it wad getting good.
So we all have a chip on our shoulders. We’ve been shafted by Nokia’s current management. We want to see what Symbian S60 V10 was going to be like Nokia Elise maybe?) Instead, we get what never seemed to take off despite over a year of deployment: Windows Phone 7…WTF!!?! “But it can’t do sh*t!” “Ahem, Tiles? What is this unimaginative abortion?” ” How could they? Must be an inside job!”
This is what kind of assholes we sound like. And the MeeGo fans? Just as bad and just as hurt. At least they have Jolla Mobile. What do we Symbian fans have? A year that we could only hope would be enough time for Nokia to swing this S^3 ship around: 2016.
Likely not going to happen. But we can try to sell everyone on it, sway the decisions. Nokia doesn’t have much longer in this binding contract with Microsoft, maybe they’ll come back to Symbian. And if I had a dozen eggs, I’d put 2 in that basket. The other 10 might as well go right up my ass with my head, because I can’t make heads or tails of what will happen next with Nokia.
I was a Ericsson fan, then a Sony Ericsson fan and now a Nokia fans. I still watch what Sony is up to, waiting REALLY for Android to get it’s shit together enough to warranty going back. But Nokia had won me over with the N8, and with the Maps, and the constant stream of updates. I like Symbian a great deal, but in my humble opinion, WP7.5 seemed pretty cool with me. Sure, i’d bitch about how it didn’t have HDMI out, or how i miss the FM transmitter, file sharing over BT. I have used these features ONCE each in the last year. So I likely won’t miss them much if my N8 blew up and I had to get a Lumia tomorrow. The design of the Lumia is awesome. I won’t miss this 3.5 in screen,.
So, I went all over the place, but I guess my point was, everyone should try the Lumia for at least 20 minutes. If you don’t like it, well, your love affair with Nokia might be over, unless you can stretch the life of a 808 out until 2016.
+1 very nicely written.
