Video: Interview: Jolla CEO Jussi Hurmola – Loves N9. Jolla Product WILL stand out from the crowd

| August 10, 2012 | 86 Replies

Here’s the latest interview with Jolla CEO, Mr Hurmola. Check out the MeeGo neck badge thing.

  • - Jolla will provide something totally new
  • - Differentiation not very hard these days
  • - Will be different in every main aspect, not revealing details.
  • How can Jolla save this burning platform? Doesn’t know about that word or what was burning
  • loves N9, still using it
  • Multitasking UI – will inherit these elements
  • Inherit large number of users and ecosystems
  • Product reveal this year. But don’t want to promise something they cannot keep (ha, learning from Nokia fails)

‘Differentiation not very hard these days’

Except when you give away your exclusive assets and “reusing” a certain model’s shell to gain attention or something like that.

  2. Project Butter says:

    Jussi Hurmola > Stephen Elop

  3. Project Butter says:

I want that MeeGo neck badge thing! Where can I get it?

  4. Janne says:

Good luck to these guys, I will be there come launch day in the line. :)

    • Anastasios says:

you and two more guys :P

      • jiipee says:

        Who’s the third one ;)

How can you Janne join the crowd since you’ve been hoping Nokia to have bettet presenters: Jussi has a perfect Finnglish accent ;)

One thing is for sure. Those guys are enjoying 100% what they are doing. Sounds like the spirit what Ive heard from Nokia R&D from years and years ago before Ollila introduced rigid processes and the Matrix.

        • Janne says:

jiipee: My expectations for a Finnish start-up are A BIT different than they are for Nokia. They can monger whatever Savo or Turku they want for all I care. They are just getting started. I think we need more ambitious start-up’s and the entrepreneur spirit in this country. Color me patriotic.

As for the product itself, only time will tell how and what that is, but for now the effort is what counts.

I’m hoping they do well! :)

          • jiipee says:

I trust they do well. There’s got to be good amount of people liking the undertog. They just need 8+ device at minimum with a twist.

I believe mr Vanjoki, who said that there is plenty of (software) competence in Finland. In industrial design the culture is even stronger. Add the OSS enthusiasts and companies, who already worked on Meego, and there’s got to be strong enough ecosystem for the beginning.

Hmm, maybe not Turku. Savo, häme and Oulu dialects are fine ;)

            • JGsmartypants says:

“Add the OSS enthusiasts and companies, who already worked on Meego, and there’s got to be strong enough ecosystem for the beginning.”

Oh so I will have all the top iOS and Android app developers running to make their apps for me? No? didn’t think so.

    • gasbond says:

      when does it will be?

  5. AlsoCan says:

    Qt guy!

  6. Oliver says:

His face tells how hard they must be working. I say keep it up and wow the world! Go Jolla!

  7. Sefriol says:

Nothing personal, but that guy looks and sounds funny : D

But I doubt that they will say anything special before the release.

    • Viipottaja says:

Lol, true, looks like a certified-propellerhead for sure.. hope he has some management skills too.

      Good luck to them!

      ps. He keeps saying “ecosystem”… ;) :P

  8. möp says:

    GO for it!

    cause
    meh wantz it :D

  9. what says:

    Jolla, what an ugly name.

  10. Anastasios says:

meego is no longer related to nokia. why is this blog still named “mynokiablog”?. Rename it so that we stop visiting it. We don’t care about meego and jolla at all

    • Diogo says:

      Skip the post

    • et3rnal says:

WEll he did mention many of us “Inherit large number of users and ecosystems” :D

      GO Jolla

    • Jari says:

So you want this blog to be renamed as My M$ Blog ? I bet 80% of current readers would go away if there were only M$ related news.

    • atom says:

Jay isn’t a slave to a megacorporation (MSNokia). He do what he want.

Hopefully that includes covering Jolla at least until they make it big and have time to take a shower.

    • Jay Montano says:

Just like when folks complained about there being WP related news here, I’ll extend the same advice.

Each post has a title. If you don’t want to read about it, we advise that readers don’t click it. We have not yet installed gaze activated clicks, so it is possible to read and avoid titles.

I post about anything faintly related to Nokia. While there may not be any immediate future MeeGo products from Nokia, it tells a lot about their past and simply because they are no longer going down that route does not mean I will ignore it. Jolla has a lot of Nokia history in it. It has a lot of Nokia staff. It’s very unlike what happened to MeeGo when Samsung defiled it to become tizen. There is no Nokia spirit in Tizen. There is still a lot of Nokia spirit in Jolla, even though there may not be official ties.

Also we try to post about what’s going on remotely related to Nokia. There’s nothing really going on in WP. The news ebbs and flows between what’s hot right now and right now, there are plenty (not all) interested in Jolla. In a few months, it will be back to Lumia, Lumia, Lumia with the new announcements.

I’ll do what we can to support those people in Nokia who made great things once but no longer have those positions at the company I love. I’m not a fan of Nokia simply for the name, but for what it represents.

      • Jari says:

Nokia represented a whole lot more in the past, now its just OEM, so the values it had in the past dont exist anymore :-( Well, I invested 555 euros on red Nokia 808, it has been shipped to me from Helsinki today. Jolla here I come…

        • twig says:

Get the eye patch cover, the tripod holder, the charger, and I bought a special otter box water proof box for it….its special.

        • bbb says:

which website did you go to ger the red 808 from Finland? do they ship overseas

        • Hary says:

Nokia is not just another regular OEM. It is also providing services. So it is OEM + services company and does make some nice software too, not just using own OS.

Right now, Nokia has to think short term. If they keep making good money and start growing again, then they can think about again getting into their own OS game after few years.

It is easier for startups like Jolla to start fresh than someone like Nokia, hence they chose that step. You are seeing, what is happening to RIM, when they tried to stick to their own OS.

          • nn says:

After killing own OSes and becoming MS OEM they have no service business to speak of. The only thing left is locations, but there you have these know problems like that so far there is no locations business or that because Elop confined Nokia to the nonexsistent WP ecosystem, they won’t be able to make money from locations even if this part of industry will take off.

If they “keep making good money” the way they are doing now, they’ll be gone in couple of quarters.

But you are right that Nokia isn’t startup. Elop unnecessarily put Nokia onto death spiral, and it is very hard to escape it. Instead of focusing on growth and innovation, they need to constantly close businesses and fire productive people, which cost resources, kills morale and undermines future potential.

            • JGsmartypants says:

I actually get dumber from your posts. Your rambling about Nokia’s location services business wasn’t even coherent English. Care to try again?

      • kornofilo says:

Jay comment over 9000. i still love nokia as well, i if jolla brings something that feels like the old nokia we fell in love with, i will import that phone to my little Panama even if it costs me 100 in shipping.

      • tired says:

Ditto… except the lumia part though..
Good to know Nokia spirit is still remembered.
Nice sarky jibe at elop’s burning platform memo. Proof that not everyone at Nokia has gone bat shit crazy.

      • lordstar says:

Ima +1 this. I think a lot of nokia fans are actually rooting for Jolla.

      • Nathan says:

        Well put Jay.

    • Doffen says:

      Go suck Balmers…

  11. kaamraan says:

I dunno but have a very strange feeling that the jolla device is going to be announced in the Nokia world…a very strange feeling indeed…

  12. giorgio says:

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed.. Jussi Hurmola.. J + (Hurm)ola = Jolla! with an extra L, of course!

    Could be a coincidence, though..

  13. A H E says:

    Seems promising :)

  14. StefanP says:

Will they become a big player soon? No.
Will they sell enough to be profitable and survive? Yes.
Will they proof Nokia to be foolish to give up a significant customer segment? YES!

    • Targon says:

Exactly my thoughts also. Power of FOSS is underestimated and tried to destroy by corporates. Jolla story will be good measure how the game goes. Waiting for my first Jolla device.

    • JGsmartypants says:

“Will they proof Nokia to be foolish to give up a significant customer segment? YES”

      Define “significant” please. 500,000 units?

  15. gordonH says:

It’s an interesting road for Jolla. Not easy, not simple but the OS is not starting from scratch. Meego has the advantage of consumer interest, media respect and linux developers support.
Jolla needs to launch their first product really fast, it doesn’t have to be perfect but it needs to come out fast.

    • gordonH says:

Simply give us Jolla OS on some top notch hardware. The bug fixes and extra features could come later via updates.
We are ready to vote with our pockets Mr. Jussi Hurmola.

    • JGsmartypants says:

“Meego has the advantage of consumer interest”

What are you smoking? Nokia blog readers are not consumers. Consumers buy phones with apps, and outnumber us 100 if not 1000 to 1.

  16. Mimi says:

Good luck to them! It’s nice to know that this brainwork doesn’t die. Techworld would be a boring place without courageous people like him.

  17. maxxxxxx says:

nokia nokia when will u wake up ?
    in my opinion
nokia was the best till 2010 ,but what about feture ?
symbian and meego dead because of u.
nokia not continuesly devoloping symbian and meego
    Now meego os got jolla
i thing symbian will also be adopt by others. sorry for english

    • knowfirst says:

mannn no one will use symbian, because it sucks, other oems using it left and nokia who owened it also left it because it is not good compared to other os

  18. BellGo says:

I truly hope that Jolla will take off, but it wont be easy that is for sure. Right now they seem to have what Nokia used to have, innovation, which I hope will be rewarded.

  19. ummNo says:

Jussi Hurmola at Summer of Startups 2012 event:

  20. Lee says:

    We ALL love N9!

  21. Carbontubby says:

I really hope Jolla embrace the idea of a Qwerty device as their flagship, something like a revamped N950. That would make it the ultimate pocket computer like the Meego devices were supposed to have been.

  22. hosny says:

jay, congratulations ,Jolla is a san off nokia and Meego is fantastic, and in future we want a OS open who give possibity to work whit multiples OS, an the custumer make his choice and can use dual boot or more , B2Geeko is another possibility for that,so noakia is the origin to Meego and maibe Plan B ,when Flop is gone

    • StefanP says:

No plan B, just let them be what they want to be! WP is OK. I think Nokia will be successful and I wish them good luck!
They are willing to give up a part of their user base, and fortunately there will be an alternative for us N9x enthusiasts. We will have the choice, its that simple.
