Samsung WP8 Devices Leaked; Any Threat to Nokia? + Message to SamDung From General the Destroyer

With the upcoming launch of WP8 OEMs other than Nokia have renewed their interest in the platform, promising better more powerful devices. Earlier today Samsungs WP8 lineup was leaked showing off two devices, one obviously aimed at the high end and the other carrying some lighter specs.

It’s interesting to see the continued use of the current WP7.5 screen resolution on a 3rd gen WP device, especially when it costs 450 Euros. Speculation is that the GT-I8750 will carry a shape similar to the Galaxy S3, which honestly is nothing exciting. I really hope whatever Nokia has in store will blow this out of the water (shouldn’t be too difficult right?); currently I have my hopes set on the flagship (Phi) to be 4.7″-5.3″ (Phablet) with a minimum of 12-18MP camera that could support any form Pureview, with a 720P screen of course (with CBD and some sort of Oleophpbic coating for all those nasty fingerprints).

Honestly if the above Samsung specs are all that WP8 would bring I wouldn’t even bother getting a new phone, the only feature that would make a difference is the expandable memory. Currently Dual core isn’t needed considering how smooth WP7.5 is; although HD screens are ultra tempting.

On a side note here’s our favorite Nokia “Extremist” letting Sam”dung” know what’s up (Caution video is definitely NSFW)

*BTW- does anyone know how I can fix the image at the top of the post? I used Paint.net with magic marker to remove the background on the Nokia Logo but when I save the full image (with the bulls) the grey checkerboard is filled with white again instead of becoming transparent, any ideas?

Figured out what I was doing wrong; even after removing the background I was selecting the logo as a whole (Cntrl + A) rather than using the magic wand to select each letter, thanks guys :D

Some programs do not support transparency. I suggest you download GIMP. It’s super easy to do transparent pics and attache them on top of other pics as well. Tutorials can be found on YouTube and other sites.

Pretty funny thinking about that name. :p

Even saw one of the members from Soyacincau (Malaysian mobile blog) called it ‘Samseng’, which is Malay for gangster. ;)

can you get rid from this people? hate this guy so much! who agree with me? he just over acting!

  4. qromodynmc says:

you must save as image as .png, jpg and other image formats not supports transparent (except gif)

  5. Daniel says:

Could it be that you saved the image as JPG? JPG does not support transperency – you have to use PNG.

    • Aliqudsi says:

Tried saving it as PNG and GIF (Png gave same result, gif gave off a black background)

      • Harangue says:

Just use Photoshop, source image of the bulls overlay the logo’s remove the white and done. Heck why not make the logo’s look like they were part of the bull statue? It is all possibile, just don’t attempt these kind of things iof you haven’t got the right tools for the job.

        • Shaun says:

          Photoshop?

Very expensive sledgehammer to crack a cheap blog photo nut.

If you’re on a Mac Ali, try Pixelmator or Acorn. If you’re not on a Mac, well that explains a lot. ;-)

        • Aliqudsi says:

Even though I figured it out, how would I make the logo look like part of the statue? is there some filter or effect that belnds and matches the color?

          • Harangue says:

Yeah, it is possible. But I ussually just fool around long enough with all kinds of parameters to get it right. Don’t know the steps to it. :P

It isn’t a one click affair, you need to work with multiple filters and blend modes to get is to look right, but then again I’m a bit of PS nut so I guess it is something I find fun and fairly easy to do but others don’t.

    • Fz says:

This is how I think I would do it in Paint.net.
      1. Bull picture to background layer
      2. Add another layer from bottom left corner of layers window (F7 to open it if it’s not already open)
      3. Make sure new layer is chosen so that it’s highlighted in layers window.
      4. Paste logos.
      5. Use Magic Wand to choose and then and delete white parts from logos.
At this point it should look ok. Since bulls were on the background layer and only blue parts of the logos on the layer above it,
      6. Save in what ever format you like, .png is ok.

Does this work, or is there a problem at some point?

      • Aliqudsi says:

Tried that at first but wasn’t working for me, had to open the logo in a new window and magic wand each letter separately (with cntrl of course)

  6. SLAYER says:

Nokia being nokia, they’ll probably pull an N97 on us.

    (I hope not)

  7. ms.nokia says:

the 5 & 8 mp cameras on these samsung phones are enough to make them losers against nokia.
i hope the leak is real.

  8. K says:

Down to earth i think nokia also will not come with better spec than samsung.only difference will be some exclusive apps that nokia will offer. Samsung windows phone 8 according to rumour will have 4.8inch screen, 1.5gh processor and 8 mega pixel camera. Since people today are more spec oriented i don’t think nokia will bring anything better then that except unless we see some pureview cameras. But i fear pureview windows phone will be too much costly that will deter people from buying it. Actually i love nokia but the true fact is what people like nokia dislike it. People doesn’t bother how smooth is your os is but how many cores you got,

    • Aliqudsi says:

Cost isn’t a factor since the main target market will be the US were everything is subsidized; at most it’ll cost you 100-200 dollars. (speaking in the best interest of Nokia)- when it comes to my own pocket I know that a pureview phablet will cost me near $600 just like the 808

  9. deep space bar says:

everything is a threat to nokia cause they cleary fucked up from 2 years ago

  10. Mazze says:

Pls provide a phone in Lumia 800 dimensions also! I just don’t like using a tablet as a mobile.

    • poiman says:

4.0″ is far from being a tablet or even a phablet…

    • Harangue says:

800′s dimensions could easily allow a screensize of 3.9″, but Nokia made it so the 800 has some monster bezels around the screen. Just like with the 900, heck the 800 is only marginally smaller than an SGS2 with it’s 4.3″ screen. The 900 is just too big and uncomfortable for the screen size it has.

      • Shaun says:

The 800 has monster bezels because they kept the dimensions of the N9 shell but had to fit the physical Windows Phone buttons in and also had to keep to the mandatory 800×480 screen. That meant they had to use a smaller screen and lose the FFC.

The N9 has an 854×480 3.9″ screen and no buttons and no thick bezel and an FFC.

        • Harangue says:

True, yet the WP buttons could move a little further down to allow for a bigger screen. However, considering the timeframe the 800 came to life in it would probably not be possbile. But it would make a great device if it had a 4″ screen and slimmer bezels. As it is now it seems there has been a lot of wasted space, much like the 900 feels as well.

  11. EmmanuelM says:

Ha ha Please NOKIA take note…

Samsung has the best AMOLED display on the market and they will not sell them to you :-)

  12. K says:

    Cost isn’t a
    factor since the
    main target
    market will be
    the US

if nokia makes its main target us then they never gonna be successful because in two or three year third world country will dominate in smartphone arena.

  13. Sefriol says:

Leaked today? I tipped these for Jay like a month ago.
I thought these were all around the globe already…

  14. Svedu says:

How can a Samsung WP8 device be a threat to Nokia, didnt Elop say that he wants Samsung and HTC to be very succesful inside WP world? If believing that, then it must be a bigger threat if there is no Samsung WP8.

  17. Tommy says:

Still no quadcore Krait. It will destroy all others quadcores at benchmarks! :/

  18. swain says:

    4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, 1.5GHz dual-core Krait, 8MP rear and 1.9MP front camera…for 500 euro.
Considering Nokia’s history, it’s next to impossible to expect something similar from them at this price point.

“Currently Dual core isn’t needed considering how smooth WP7.5 is”

    are you kidding dude..

    • poiman says:

      Totally agree! Thanks!

      • Harangue says:

WP7.5 on it’s own if pretty smooth on the S2 and even the S1 processers. It is 3rd party apps that lag like there is no tomorrow. Loading times take ages, although there could also be a case of slow accesable memory at fault there.

Considering the speed of the S4 MSM8960 it would be a very welcome addition. Yet, as Swain pointed out, there is a very little chance Nokia will put something out with the 8960 + large display + decent memory + nice exterior at that kind of price point. (€500)

        • poiman says:

I hope Nokia will match at least these Samsung specs. And the camera, even if it isn’t PureView, it has to be at least as good as the N8.

  19. satya says:

i don’t understand why samsung is threat to nokia on wp8 it is like nokia android phones theat to samsungs androids.People want it to be best out of there phones why they choose which is not their(samsung) best work?while nokia putting their all in to the wp8.this is makes common sense want wp choose nokia want android choose samsung or htc!!!

  20. satya says:

  22. Luisito says:

MMM… A Phablet or Phoblet???… I think the only really succefull device in that category was/is the Galaxy Note, and that’s just because you can use it as a Draw Tablet, yeah, there’re people that need/want big screen, but not so many. So unless, Nokia bring a really succesfull use for that size of the screen, the device will fall under the niche space (at best). Still wondering how will perform the PV Lite (an how will it work, if it will we really usefull, or just marketing)

    • deep space bar says:

PV lite was already in the N8 :/……maybe in the N85/86 since they took such stunning pics

      • Luisito says:

I think that was due to the optics + algorithm, Oh course that kind of device will worth the money, but they need something at the same level (or better) than the 808 (if not why release such kind of device??? if your future devices won’t be better)

  23. torcida says:

    hehehe, this is da man!!!!

  24. anon says:

I’ve no doubt Nokia will produce a good WP8 handset, but their strategy is a bit off.

To get noticed on tech blogs, especially ones that are android centric, Nokia needs to release a phone with spec’s which are second to none : 720P screen, Quad core S4 processor, 12mp camera with xenon flash. Do I think they will do this? Sadly, No (not until next year at least).

As Jay pointed out, if this is all WP OEM’s are bringing to the table (single/dual core WP8 devices running 480×800), they’re pretty much screwed right from the start.

Come on guys; Who ever wins a war fighting defensively ? Nobody

    • Luisito says:

quad cores Krait processors are starting to rolling out of factory in this quarter, and off course, Samsung (at least) is just waiting to see how big public response to Windows Phone 8; you won’t throw a ton of cash into something you don’t know it will work, you will???

  25. migo says:

I hope Nokia branches away from AMOLED. Pentile might work fine with complex images, but it breaks horribly with solid colours, and guess what Windows Phone uses?

    • viktor von d. says:

and guess what screen lumia 900 uses? – amoled NON-pentile. and wp uses all kind of screens, like super lcd in htc phones, lcd in lumia 710 and 610 and so forth

      • Nathan says:

He’s talking about the “rumoured” 4.3-8″ device (Nokia Phi) using a HD PenTile AMOLED.
Personally I don’t think it’d be that much of an issue, as PPI would still be quite a bit higher than the 900.
Still, effective density & colour gamut would be much lower than other screen tech, but then other screen tech have their own disadvantages.
