We’ve had a week now to settle in to the newly announced Nokia Lumias. There’s a lot to like but there’s always as ever, room for improvement.

If you could, what would you have changed about the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820?

Features wise, design wise…? I’m sure I can already guess who will be screaming for an OS change.

You’re welcome to say so but think of this more as a feedback form for the next Lumia. I guess it would help if we actually had one that we could use and give real feedback on (because we might end up liking something we thought we wouldn’t and vice versa).

After watching the iPhone announcement, i honestly feel this year should be Nokia’s year. Nothing exciting and groundbreaking from iphone and droids for this year really.

But a pity, Nokia messed up on its first step, and messed up more by Microsoft’s inability to set the release date of WP8.

COME ON Nokia! It’s your MOMENT now! Get your act together with full force!

I’d stuff it all the 920 into a Lumia 800 size body :) and add a microSD slot

    • lordstar says:

      SAME HERE.

I actually lust for the specs and technology in the Lumia 920, i just want a phone that’s more compact and not make a huge bulge in my pocket. I put a Lumia 900 in my pocket once and it made me feel like I’m carrying device that’s as big as a gameboy advance.

      Compact size for comfort please.

I’m afraid we’re in the minority though. It seems we are in the “the bigger the better” era. We’ll have to wait for the revival of the “the smaller the better” era.

      :-(

Of course, if Nokia succeeded and made tons and tons of money, I’d hire they Jolla Mobile guys back and would make more pairs like the N9-Lumia 800 one. They would always design a hardwrae platform, then offer the user to OS of choice. Everybody happy… excepto MS, of course (that’s why it will never happen).

I’m not buying a monopolist OS EVER AGAIN. That’s why my last money for Nokia went to the N9. No iphone for me. No Android either because there seems to be no industrial design love in any of their manufacturers.

  3. A-S-D says:

Make them both lighter. The 920 shouldn’t be heavier than 145 grams and the 820 shouldn’t be heavier than 140 grams.

  4. PuppyMonster says:

microsd slot. that’s the only drawback for me..

  5. zubuu says:

A 4″display would have been nice with micro sd and a little less weight!

But won’t complain, getting the 920 anyway!

  6. Bkams says:

Yeah, definetly a microSD slot! or At least an USB On-The-Go… Plus radio transmitter. Lighter weight and A physical qwerty keyborad ;)

What’s with the MicroSD obsession I constantly hear. What kind of pirate needs 32Gbs of music and is unable to backup older camera material to pc / skydrive?

In answer to the topic title, I think Lumia 920 truly is Nokia’s most innovative phone since N95, but for future:
    - 12mpx camera (Nokia N8 camera is still one of the best)
    - Bluetooth 4.0
    - 3.7 – 4 inch screen (4,5 is too much for a mobile phone)

    Radical ones:
    - Virtual Sim card / Why debate about Nano/Micro, when you can remove the whole thing and yes I know operators resist this
    - Remove FM radio (who needs this, when you can stream?)
    - Remove all the connectors and make it Waterproof (also extra space -> More room for battery). You can listen music via Bluetooth and stream files via Wifi/LTE + charge with Qi

Usually including something extra (FM radio, Sim card slot) requires compromises on the stuff that matters (room of the battery and the camera module)

    Extra ones:
    - Now with the NFC, Nokia please provide couple NFC stickers to play with, costs you 0,6$ and not a dime more. + Make customers happy

    • Franklin says:

Pirates with no proper access to WIFI and 3G thank you. Not everyone live with such readily accessible infrastructures as you do. But at least try to spare a thought for the 3rd world countries.

Apart from that, it’s also about the convenience to swap cards and exchange data when necessary. Music is not the only media being stored, there are movies and videos too. Furthermore, IIRC skydrive is only limited to 7GB, and uploading huge files eats up lots of data as compared to simply storing in a microSD card.

    • abcs says:

It is surprising after this has been explained time & again(and again and again….), there are still those who do not comprehend.

Come to countries where 3g data rates are expensive(with no unlimited data options) and free WIFI(outside home) are few. Try transfering a large file virtually at 512kb speed and see if you will appreciate the offline options.
What if I want to copy the large files(think 500MB above) for someone else and wouldnt be seeing them for a long time? Cant tell them to wait till next time for me to copy on pen drive. Bluetooth takes ages. Upload online, worse, they need to download-> again, data rates.
MicroSD card, just take it out, slot it in their phone, copy, done on the spot.

FM radio is free, online streaming need to pay data rates.

      • John S says:

I understand now the argument with users from countries with capped 3g usage / expensive data plans. But with 32-64gb it should be possible to provide some sort of software fix/solution:

Nokia suite could automatically transfer your laptop’s music library’s latest songs to Lumia 920 – When you listen with mobile, you can press thumb down / up. If thumb down the phone removes the song from mobile. Same for photos / videos as the backup still exists on the laptop.

In addition, Gsmarena.com still claims that lumia 920 has USB OTG?

    • PuppyMonster says:

i bet to disagree. in case my case, i’m kinda a little audiophile. microsd slot would be really helpful to have my 35gb mp3 collection. can’t afford to buy another device just for the sake of music. it would be really really great to have your fav music all the time with you. . who cares about the radio anyways.

  8. andy says:

i want it to have 12mp,fm transimitter, usb otg and symbian!!!

  9. sammyl says:

    Lighter and 64GB model.

  10. cpbrown says:

    * pureview camera,
    * meego harmattan OS (or upgrade wp to match ALL of its capabilities),
    * physical keyboard (slide-out, like the n900,
    * wpa2 hotspot,
    * micro SD slot,
    * embedded webm & h264 video in the browser,
    * cursor mode in the browser (like in maemo),
    * select, copy & paste text anywhere,
    * build contacts from found data (map locations, phone numbers, urls, email addys, selected text),
    * comprehensive social aggregator (like people in wp, but include all common subscriptions as well as generic protocols like xmpp & xml),
    * built-in sftp client.

  11. garry says:

Play via radio will be nice addition.

  12. migo says:

That ***** bezel! I can’t really think of anything else I’d want for the 920. Slightly smaller would be nice as I have small hands.

Not sure what I’d do with the 820, I don’t see any reason to upgrade to it from my 710, although I’d definitely prefer better symmetry with it as well.

  13. Zephyr says:

Reduced bezel specially the bottom one

  14. Waqas Ahmad Khan says:

    Nothing, just price.

  15. Ajit says:

Just remove the useless buttons on the screen top and put Meego.

    Swiping all the way long…

At least Meego supports Video Out (My N9 does)!

  16. Hamad says:

I would love to see Nokia’s 3D Maps on this(920), or the next Lumia.

  17. Mad Iguana says:

A slide-out keyboard / E7 form factor. If Nokia did that, I’d buy one.
In fact, I’d buy two in case one didn’t work.
Actually, I’d buy three in case the battery ran out in the one that did work.

  18. jack says:

should put a keyboard of the e7, camera of n8 and its gud to go…

  19. manubharath says:

    Include Fm radio
    Micro sd slot
    fm transmitter
Not sure if it already has mass storage mode and usb on the go capabilities..
    Not bothered about hdmi..

    • Chris says:

*gasp* Only now I realize there’s no FM radio…

Well if I could only change one thing, I’d ask for stereo rich recordings. It’ll be the best video recording phone ever.

  20. Tak says:

Pureview camera and music making software from iOS.

  21. Carl says:

I know this is silly. Cyan?

  22. Lumianer says:

I would add a micro sd card to the 920 and a wireless charging plate to the 820 !

  23. Locomoco says:

    - I’d move the power button so it’s not on the same side as the other buttons.
    - I’d add in a slot for a Micro SD card
    - Xenon flash
    - Offer a matte finish option for all colors

  24. jocco says:

    Design and Dimensions:

-First i would move the screen some millimeter down and put the nokia branding in
    middle just under the microphone.
-Left from the 3.5 jack, build another slot like the microSIM slot but for the MicroSD wich would support up to 32MB.
-the new search logo of WP8 instead of the old WP7 one.
Max Dimensions 125.9 x 63.9 x 9.9 mm (with really minimal Bezel, almost edge to edge 4.5″ screen)
    Max Weight 159 g

    Features an Specs:

Resolution 720 x 1280 pixels, true 16/9 HD screen with CBD technology
    Protection Corning Gorilla Glass 2
Audio Stereo loudspeaker, Stereo Rich Recording, Dolby Digital Plus

Bluetooth v4 with A2DP, EDR connectable to all phones
USB Yes, microUSB v2.0, USB On-the-go support and MHL ready for TVout through HDMI
Camera 12 MP (4000×3000 pixels) with 1/1.83” sensor size, ND filter (basically the N8 camera module without xenon with all the PW2 innovations of the 920)
Radio Stereo FM radio with RDS; built-in antenna, FM transmitter, FM recording

Battery Standard battery, Li-Ion 2200 mAh

Other features Native play of Xvid/DivX videos, Alarm play even if the Phone is OFF,

In a perfect world, there would have been no front buttons which would make the phone even compacter. In Heaven, The OS would have been the supperior MeeGo instead of WP8.

…But hellas we are not in heaven, we are not even in heaven so I can live with WP and his buttons if built that version of Lumia 920.

  25. Jocco says:

i meant ”we are not even in a perfect world”
