First Ever Instagram Client for N9 “Instago”

| November 6, 2012 | 61 Replies

It would seem the Meego community doesn’t like being left out of anything; either that or when they hear an app developer say “No, we don’t have any plans at the moment” that translates into “I dare you to do it yourself”. Either way we should all be thankful for the skilled guys out the who are clever and savvy enough to do what most of us normal old folks can’t.

Instago is a Reader ONLY Instagram client for the N9, that allows the user to access their Instagram profile, view their feed and pretty much do everything you can do on Andorid or iOS as long as it doesn’t require publishing to the site (you can’t post photos or comments, and as of now notifications are yet to be implemented).

The app runs surprisingly well seeing as it’s still in early beta form; and perfectly mimics the Instagram ui; loading times of images doesn’t take any longer than on any other official instagram client, and in my opinion it at least looks better than the iPad version. All in all Instago is  a pretty nifty client and for anyone who uses instagram but has chosen the Meego way it’s a definite must have.

Update from the Developer:

Looking at the video makes me want to make the touch areas bigger for the buttons, though :)

The new developer betas actually already support posting comments and search. A new stable beta with those features will be released this weekend (I hope).

Regarding the upload discussion that sparked here: Relax people. I’ll just develop a silly little app for a cute little platform and let’s see what happens next. Will Instagram grant me whitelist access to their (already existing) upload methods? Unlikely. Will ask try anyway? Yeah, no harm in doing so.

And even if they deny the request (or more likely don’t react at all) there may be other ways of uploading images. It’s actually not impossible, it’s just against the Instagram TOCs. Not saying that I will attempt to do so. Or did. Just saying.

Regardless how this turns out, for me it’s fun and relaxing to write this little app at the moment. And as long as that’s the ase I will continue to do so.

Have a nice day, all.

*note: Alot of people here mock instagram, which is slightly justified, but as a social network (forget the ugly filters) it’s not too shabby; and even if it were a horrible invention a lot of people use it, which means it SHOULD be available (WP I’m looking at you).

Oh & last I checked they are working on the limitations, it’s not yet totally insurmountable, certainly doesn’t make it easy though when you have very little official support from your parent co.

Noooo!!!!! Please guys, do not use Instagram! It is ruining history.

Take GOOD pictures with a GOOD camera like an 808 or 920. Save the best quality photos you can for the future. Don’t ruin it by adding dumb fading effects.

People of the 1960s who were stuck with faded photos would think we are crazy. People of the 2060s will think we are stupid for ruining preservation of history!

    Thank you that is all.

  • Great

instago is great , as you say author , is equal to or better than the official one, and if we talk about other application wazapp not let out , it is certainly better than the official wazapp rocks

  • thedead1440

Firstly, Instago has been out for quite somewhile; you should be mentioning that.

Secondly, you don’t mention why there isn’t any Upload support yet. The developer has clearly mentioned on his first post of his thread that he wants to ensure the app works flawlessly before submitting it to Instagram for official upload support. He is still fine-tuning it so hasn’t submitted it to them yet. Instagram have approved unofficial clients for official upload support hence the developer’s optimism.

    • scorpion

no they havent approved any third party apps for uploading
meego will never be able to upload pics to instagram because they dont care about this platform
so this app is basically useless like the wp7 ones

      • Pritchard
        • scorpion

          read what?
what are the third party apps that let you upload images to instagram?
you can beg as much as you want it wont change anything
they dont want third party apps to upload pics on their network

          • scorpion

Instagram API doesn’t allow photo upload at this moment. No unofficial clients, like Instago here, can upload photos for the time being.

            so this app is useless

            • Pritchard

              Useless… O’rly?
Expressing the hate deeply it seems.

          • Pritchard

It’s explained somewhere in that thread, there’s a potential access route, if you dont want to read & instead prefer to feel the hate that’s not anyone’s prob but yours.

            • scorpion

yeah i am going to read 18 pages without pointing me about what i should be searching
              no thx

even if there is a potential access route which i highly doubt they will patch it immediately
and why programmers from the wp7 apps didnt found it?

its not hate i am just saying the obvious
instagram don’t want third party apps to upload pics on their network
this wont change no matter how much you can beg them.
so if i have a n9 and i cant upload pics why should i care about this app and the whole instagram social phenomenon

              • thedead1440

One main thing I like to say is: if you don’t know things its better to keep your mouth shut.

I wouldn’t type things without knowing anything.

Have you heard of Hipstamatic? Its an iOS app allowing upload for Instagram due to Instagram giving them full official upload support.

From the developer of Instago, @dirksonguer:

Instagram said they will whitelist applications if they see a use for them. And my point will be: they don’t provide a MeeGo client, so it’s no competition.

The point of my original post was that when posting about an app, the writer should post more info such as what I posted that is available on the first post of the TMO thread; the same place where the developer posted about Instago first!

                Happy?

P.S. Please don’t compare developers between different platforms; its not worth it.

                • scorpion

the hipstamatic ability to upload pics is a business move that we dont know its background. probably money where involved
if you want to believe that instagram would let a meego app upload pics to their network good for you. just dont hold your breath

for the time being as i said with out upload abilities this app is useless
if this changes in the future then we can talk again and of course it will be a big deal for meego.

                  • thedead1440

That’s not my point! I personally don’t use social networks so I’m not holding my breath for anything neither does one particular app become a “big deal” for meego.

What I am alluding to is when you write-up an article, the responsibility of the author is to provide some info.

Firstly, this app is old news, nothing new so if you publish about something already 2 months old you should give some updates about its progress in the 2 months it has been published.

Instago hasn’t been dead in the past 2 months; in fact the developer provides weekly developer builds.

Currently, he is ironing out the kinks in the system before he submits to Instagram. That is his intention. As the writer of the article, Ali should be mentioning this along with the author’s intentions.

You came in guns blazing with the following statements:

“no they havent approved any third party apps for uploading”

“meego will never be able to upload pics to instagram”

I just proved to you that your statements were unwarranted when you knew next to nothing about the app developer’s intentions.

Yes, its possible that Instagram don’t approve official upload; but that’s not the point here compared to the developer’s intentions.

If you read the thread that was linked to you, you would see that one of devs behind Wazapp, knobtviker, has offered dirksonguer his help to get uploads working without having to consult Instagram.

Now, I don’t want to say anything about devs on WP but if a Wazapp dev says he can help get it working, I know he can be trusted on that!

Oh I’m feeling sorry that someone could even push you to write such a long post…

                      Thanks!

                  • Pritchard

Nobody has claimed it’s an absolute certainty, the only usr that’s been making absolute statements is you.
Claiming that Instagram doesn’t allow access to 3rd parties PERIOD, thus it will NEVER happen for Instago.

                    • scorpion

hipstamatic is not just a third party app trying to be a unofficial instagram app like instago does
its another social network with more users than all the n9 users. dont compare them with apps like instago with no user base.
as i told before for now the app is useless
thats what matters for the time being

                    • Pritchard

It’s not useless at all for some users, this genre of app is not the least bit interesting to me (full access or not), but it is for some.

You claimed they don’t allow 3rd-party access PERIOD, changing your tune now I see…

Clearly you’re not an expert of their internal processes (technical) or LA’s (legal/procedural), you’ve been told to read the thread, there you’ll get a better appreciation of it all.

This is old news, but thanks for sharing it here Ali…
It’s also quite probable that full support will come, see thehdead’s post above for a fuller explanation.
I couldn’t care less personally, but believe it or not there’s MANY users who think it’s the end of the world without apps like this.

I think it’s awesome that devs can still find the time and passion to create good looking apps like this for the superb N9. Unfortunately for me (like Shane above) I’m in the “Steve Litchfield” camp and care very little for Instagram-like-filter photos. Actually surprised this fad is still going.
