Nokia says Nokia brand still very much alive!

On Friday, Nokia EVP (Actual Nokia), Barry French had a press release out at NSN blog. It was in reference to the news going around that Microsoft would be dropping the Nokia name from Nokia Lumia. Just because Microsoft have dropped the Nokia brand, it doesn’t mean the death of it.

Whilst Nokia’s mobile phones is now part of Microsoft, Nokia is ‘financially robust’ and has moved from weakness to strength, taking pride in having one of the world’s best infrastructure business, leader in maps and stellar IP.

Some of today’s press reports related to rumours about Microsoft dropping the Nokia brand have declared the death of the Nokia brand.  But, to paraphrase Mark Twain, “reports of our death are an exaggeration.”  Yes, we have sold our mobile phone business to Microsoft.  But the Nokia of today is financially robust and has moved from weakness to strength. We have one of the world’s best telecom infrastructure businesses, a global leader in the mapping and location business, a stellar intellectual property portfolio and some of the finest innovation capabilities of any company anywhere.  Remember, Nokia started almost 150 years ago with just one paper mill. Over time we have repeatedly and successfully reinvented ourselves.  We may not be the same Nokia of several years ago, but we are here, we are strong, and our brand is very much still alive. Not to mention kicking!

I think the point of the Nokia brand ‘dying’ was at least in the eyes of fans and consumers. Nokia may have a direct to customer product one day but at the moment, the only ones remaining are the Nokia Lumia handsets created prior to the MS deal. Once that is gone, the name Nokia becomes very difficult to regard as relevant in the tech blogosphere. Hard, but not impossible. Nokia is a master of reinvention and what are now may be something completely different yet again in the future.
