Nokia should have gone Android? Sony Quadruples annual loss forecast as smartphones disappoint.

Not to dredge up old discussions, but I saw a tweet exchange between Jay Kannan and Charles Arthur discussing Sony’s quadrupled annual loss forecast.

Jay Kannan brings back the chimes that Nokia should have gone Android as it would have saved their declining business, but as shown with Sony, it’s not completely rosy. They’ve had some ups and downs with Android, no? Similarly with HTC. Samsung and LG are doing better, though at the end of July there were reports that Samsung’s smartphone sales were plunging.

Any time an Android manufacturer is doing less well, it’s often used to bolster the pro Nokia not going Android route. Nokia did technically try the waters with the ‘X’ family but that was half-assed attempt which some say was more of a play to show Microsoft what might happen at Nokia.

Sony’s smartphone sales expectations are cut with operating losses expected. Their offerings have been decent but the attention in the Android world is all on Samsung with some shine on LG and HTC. Not only that, there’s competition from cheaper but still ‘premium’ OEMs, ZTE, Huawei, and Lenovo from China. Whilst we could say that Nokia could have differentiated on Android in hardware, it was only time till the the low and mid were under high attack. A company called “OnePlus” is delivering high end experiences at a budget – where Microsoft/Nokia’s old Devices and Services aim to bring their ‘affordable flagships’ of innovation at a more achievable price point.
