  • Nokia 6 marks the first step for the Nokia brand into Android smartphones with more to come in H1 2017

Espoo, Finland – 8 January 2017: After securing the exclusive Nokia brand licensing rights in mobile phones in late 2016, HMD Global Oy (“HMD”) is proud to announce the launch of its Nokia 6 smartphone in China. The Nokia 6 marks the first step in HMD’s ambition to set a new standard in design, material quality and manufacturing innovation across every tier of its products by building on the hallmarks of a true Nokia phone experience. The device, which is designed explicitly with the needs of users in mind, combines quality and in-built durability to deliver a real-life premium smartphone experience at a price point for the highly aspirational Chinese consumer.

The decision by HMD to launch its first Android smartphone into China is a reflection of the desire to meet the real world needs of consumers in different markets around the world. With over 552 million smartphone users in China in 2016, a figure that is predicted to grow to more than 593 million users by 20171, it is a strategically important market where premium design and quality is highly valued by consumers.

With the arrival of Nokia 6, consumers will see superior craftsmanship and design quality in action. It takes 55 minutes to machine a single Nokia 6 from a solid block of 6000 series aluminium. It then receives two separate anodising processes, taking over ten hours to complete, with each phone being polished no less than five times. The end result is an aluminium unibody with the highest level of visual and structural quality.

Delivering quality to the core, the Nokia 6 display has a bright hybrid in-cell 5.5” screen with full HD resolution and incredible colour reproduction wrapped in 2.5D Gorilla Glass. The display stack is laminated together with a polarizer layer enabling excellent sunlight readability and slim form. The build is completed with the latest generation Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 430 processor with X6 LTE modem designed for excellent battery life and superior graphics performance.

The Nokia 6 has 4GB RAM and 64GB storage with which to run the latest version of Android Nougat and is packed with entertainment to bring to life the latest that Android has to offer. The dual amplifiers deliver a 6dB louder sound than a regular amp, giving higher voice, deeper bass and unmatched clarity. Dolby Atmos creates powerful, moving audio that seems to flow all around users. The Nokia 6 packs a 16MP phase detection auto focus rear camera for sharp detailed pictures, and an 8MP front camera. The f/2.0 aperture lenses and exclusive camera UI with automatic scene detection make it easy to take great shots every time.

Arto Nummela, CEO, HMD Global said: “Just a short while ago we announced the launch of HMD Global. From the outset we have stated that we intend to move with speed to establish a position as a player in the smartphone category and create products that truly meet consumer needs. So when will Nokia Android smartphones be available for the rest of us ?

So when will Nokia Sailfish smartphones be available for the rest of us ?

  • AlOnE_Mobile

    1699 CNY?
I thought the currency unit for China’s note is RMB (Ren Min Bi)

CNY stands for Chinese New Year lol

      iPhone 6 LOL 😛

After looking at this UI I think we might see a swipe based UI on these phones. Swipe up from bottom of the screen to open app drawer.

      • Systematic Systematic

But why to repeat MeeGo/Sailfish UI instead to use whole Linux MeeGo Sailfish OS? That is the question.

    • Hemedans

all china released phone are like that, even from big name OEMs

    • zlutor

I’m big fan of buttonless design…

    • Same on Google Pixel. Swipe from bottom takes you to the all apps screen.

  • Ashutosh kaushal

does any1 know the complete config ? any mention of fingerprint sensor ?

    • Jakub

Yes, fingerprints sensor doubles up as physical button

Nokia will certainly have even more better handset for global launch. But i dont see the z launcher.

    • LoveNokia

It’s better that they didn’t use z launcher lol

      • Systematic Systematic

Exactly. They’d better use Linux MeeGo Sailfish OS – the best what they can do. And they ought to get hurry as they are late in comparison to others.

I have looked for carefully and I have found nothing attractive in Android generic mobiles now branded with Nokia logo. Just a copy-cut from hundreds of almost the same boring Android mobiles, just like a relict(s) of past century. Of course those who haven’t seen anything else then Android may not want anything else, until they will notice modern solutions and advantages. That is exactly why Linux MeeGo Sailfish OS is growing and getting more and more popular. I repeat it from N9 times and now it becomes visible for everybody. Even Nokia can see this, even when don’t want to hear any feedback form customers.

In case anyone want to read up on the processor of the NOKIA X6

      Very informative.

  • £200 for this phone is soo cheap! Lets hope whatever they bring out to the UK is even better with a equally low price!

The design is nowhere as bad as the first prototypes showed. A lot of hints from past Nokias, specially the windows phone 8 powered lumias. The back is so Nokia Lumia 620. The front till the lower bottom is reminiscent of the Lumia 920; the curved glass, the left top “Nokia” and even the ear piece. The lower bottom is still samsungish, they need to do away with it. On the whole, they are in the right direction.
I really think that the first generation windows phone 8 powered Lumias (620,720,820,920 and 925) are among the best designed candybar touchscreen phones (whether you like windows phone or not, that’s another issue), alot of design inspiration can be brought from them. At the end of the day, they were designed when the Nokia company was still more or less intact. I see that the design team agrees with this and I hope that they take this approach further.
BTW, there are hints in the software from past Nokias as well. The round icons, the folder icon and the camera UI in the promo images and video take alot from the Nokia/Symbian belle UI. The camera shutter sound sounds the same as the Nokia/Lumia Camera app and the Nokia belle camera app shutter sounds as well.
Not bad at all for a first attempt.

      EricLovesSymbian says:

The more they make Android resemble symbian Belle FP2, the better!

Hopefully Nokia baked in a bunch of themes into the settings part.

Also, I hope pray and wish that this one individual phone sells so well that it eclipses all Lumia sales! For all the Nokia fans that spoke well about garbage rancid, junk Windows phone, I hope this phone breaks every record and shows that Nokia should have saved symbian for the low-end or feature phone (with access to the play store), and used Android from the beginning!

I wish this one Nokia phone sells more than all junk garbage pathetic Lumia phones combined!

    • Systematic Systematic

“Windows powered Lumias” were using the Nokia N9 design, so MeeGo design. Windows was obsolete and making device FUBAR, IMHO.

  • Noki

The device looks prety good and the specks are not 2 bad memory and storage wise… And the price is super competitive, it has everything’s to be a success… Welcome back Nokia, we missed you…

    • God of chaos

The processor is not so great, but with 4 gigs of ram it probably won’t have to reload apps that much, as they will be held in memory longer.

  • zlutor

I thinkit is for Chinese New Year, for ‘showing the flag’…

I guess there are models to come later in many segment, with global delivery…

  • Hacklove666

    245.57 $

  • Joe_HTH

Another generic Android phone. This thing will get lost in the sea of Android phones. There’s nothing special about it.

  • EricLovesSymbian

    EricLovesSymbian says:

It’s stylish but too reserved. It’s a mash up of the iPhone 5s with the size of an iPhone 7, the back of some garbage pathetic junk Lumia, and the front of some Samsung wannabe Chinese phone.

I think I’ll buy one (as long as it takes micro sim cards, not nano sim cards), and has a phenomenal battery.

From what I see, it’s as though it is thick enough for a 3300 mAh battery. It would make sense since it has quick charge 3.0 capability…

FYI: Sailfish China is Jolla and Chinese partners consortium which will introduce Sailfish OS as localised OS for China – officially confirmed and communicated.

Sleep well Nokia, keep dreaming about nobody knows what.

Just to remind you that Nokia N9 was for a time the number one smartphone in China in times of Nokia N9, when China Telecom was a partner in the oryginal MeeGo project. Then Elopcalypse has happened. And we all still suffers from Elopcalypse effects and caused the elop effect.

    • Systematic Systematic

Anyway, that also means that HMD Global (branded Nokia or not) will have more chances in China market when will have Sailfish OS device in portfolio. I hoped this is obvious but I was remarked that not and above comment means nothing, so adding this. Also it is worth to add that they sacrifice amount in millions of $ for Sailfish China consortium to get Sailfish ready for Chinese market. And that mean adaptations of already localised OS as it in at last 2 Chinese language versions. Take it under consideration you both HMD & Nokia.

      • Systematic Systematic

Just more info: Sailfish China consortium confirmed investment of 250 million U$D in China. Cosidering value of $ that makes lots of money in there. And investments are rather in infrastructure surrunding Sailfish OS devices and development Sailfish ecosystem in China (so software), then in the OS as such, however of course there is an exclusive licence for development Chinese OS in similar way as there is Russian Sailfish OS. Sailfish as Chinese OS is to be ready whittin 6 months, even now already Sailfish has localised and working Chinese languages versions in Kantonian and Madarinian. Sailfish in China from the begining has targets that we know explicite from MeeGo so: “(…) The Sailfish China consortium will develop Sailfish OS based solutions for secure smartphones, the automotive industry, TVIoT and smartwatches. (…)” – I think all we have dream about MeeGo like SmartThings (watches, IVI, TVsets, navigations, yahts, buildings etc.) quite soon will be a reality in China.

And what about Nokia? When we will have Nokia Sailfish device?
I really thought with the comeback it will appear, seems I was a dreamer only.

BTW. Thank you for making our dreams of MeeGo not to come true. Seems to sleep deep like a cursed princess from a book. A prince on a white horse in a meanwhile has went to kiss Chineses.
