Is @nokiamobile’s 3310 2G only? What about areas where 2G is switched off or have incompatible bands?

This question has popped up since the announcement and a few of you have been understandably questioning it too.

We’ve read articles about old Nokia 331x phones no longer being able to connect to a network as slowly, 2G is getting turned off.

Dual band 900/1800 MHz with 2.5G internet. Does anyone remember tri-band and then quadband being a feature? LOL.

A new factoid for me according to Wiki,

“Second-generation 2G cellular telecom networks were commercially launched on the GSM standard in Finland by Radiolinja (now part of Elisa Oyj) in 1991″

2G brought more data, enabling ‘new’ services such as text messaging.

As shared with Lester Chan on facebook – over in Singapore, sales of 2G phones won’t be allowed from Jan 1, 2017.

The independent points out that America would be out of luck as this can’t connect to their networks.

I know we’re not expecting anyone to do any significant web use with the new 3310 but at the very least, some might have wanted to use it as a secondary phone/back up/emergency phone. For the majority of countries that still have active 2G, this won’t be an issue.

So, is there a real dilemma here with connection or are we missing something obvious?

I also forgot to check – is this the big sized SIM card?
