Nokia World 2012, originally scheduled to take place in Finland, September 25-26 is taking place ahead of schedule!

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/03/06/nokia-world-2012-is-coming-home-to-finland-september-25-26/

The Helsinki Nokia World is taking place September 5th-6th instead! Also there’s a change in format. It won’t be the big single Nokia World event that it usually is, but various small ones.

Hopefully this means that products from Nokia are coming ahead of schedule, as opposed to some being delayed and hence requiring Nokia World to be broken up not to delay products that are ready.

This first event is INVITATION ONLY and will be for operator and retail partners. So, not for bloggers then.

We have made some changes to the format and date of Nokia World 2012. Instead of a single, large-scale event as we have had in years past, we will run a number of smaller, more intimate events with specific audiences in mind. Think less CES, moreSXSW.

The first of these will take place in Helsinki on September 5-6. (A while ago we announced that it would be held on September 25-26, but the date has now been advanced by a couple of weeks.) This invitation-only event will cater primarily to our operator and retail partners.

With these more intimate events we want to provide the most enjoyable and rewarding experience tailored for each audience.

Other activities will be announced in the weeks and months ahead. Stay Tuned.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/05/23/nokia-world-gets-new-format-and-date/

More details, as just mentioned, will appear later (weeks and months).

“Other Nokia activities for the media and bloggers will be announced in the coming weeks and months. “

This might be good and bad. At Nokia World, everything is always announced on Day 1. Nothing of interest happens day 2. There’s also that anticlimax of nothing coming after hoping for a surprise.

What this means is that time and time again, some particular device will overshadow something else. This should mean more focused buzz on what they’re announcing. It could work really well to concentrate your efforts on a particular audience. Media and bloggers one side who can mingle with each other, retail partners and carriers on the other. They both mix with Nokia but with each other, they’re kinda like oil and water.

In contrast, it could be bad in that there are less attendees – less excitement, less of a show. But Nokia World should not be about the show, but about the products. Hopefully this Nokia World is focused on delivering the best products. At the very worst, it’s bad because Nokia are keeping purse strings tight.

BTW regarding devices, I would prefer to have big splashy devices instead of multiple mediocre ones please. This is what began our troubles in the first place. I hope we are seeing great devices in these mini intimate Nokia Worlds. It would be cool to have multiple Nokia Worlds at various regions all at the same time, so then really, the whole world can enjoy Nokia World locally as opposed to jetting off to one location and many people missing out. Yes it might mean that there’s less of the meet ups and networking – but more people get to see the Nokia products, which is really what we should care about.

Update:

We’re changing the set-up because we want to provide targeted events for different stakeholders. The previous Nokia Worlds have been pretty gigantic, catering for operators, retailers, analysts, investors, media, bloggers, etc. This year we are going to tailor each event for a different target audience to make sure the attendees can really get the most out of it. In a nutshell: don’t read too much into it

Part of the goodies bag I got from Lumia Lounge, included a Press Release from Nokia and Bridgestone Australia, one of the nations largest tyre brands. This release was to say that as of yesterday, the company “upgraded its smartphone fleet to 140 Nokia Lumia 800s”. Apparently, the devices had been trialled extensively by the staff recently.

The company chose the Lumia 800, after comparing it amongst the latest Blackberry and iPhone handsets. The choice is being reported as coming down to its “seamless integration with existing business tools (including Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office Word and Excel), ease-of-use, in-built navigation, aesthetic design, security, and improved reliability”.

Bridgestone reports that they previously used various devices across multiple platforms, but kept “struggling to meet differing workplace needs”. The device balances the business needs of their employees, whilst also giving them a device that meets the needs of a personal device.

It’s good to see initiatives like this taking place, where Nokia is gaining traction in the business sector. I think this is where Windows Phone will excel, as it has those things like ActiveSync and Lync, which many companies have built their IT infrastructure around. Plus, like they mention in the press release, it doesn’t compromise on usability as a personal device, and looks good.

Nokia needs to enter the business sector even more, as it is typically iPhone dominated, and this domination ripples on into their homes. Nokia needs to be associated with the powerful, sleek, modern smartphone that is desirable and snappy. Right now, its still the “budget handsets your grandmother has”.

I’ve tried to rewrite everything, but apologies if I missed something.

So earlier this evening, I attended Lumia Lounge, Nokia Australia’s event to introduce the Nokia Lumia 610 and Lumia 900 to the Australian media. I got to play around with the 610 and 900 all night. I am really surprised at the size of the 900. Initially I thought it would be too large for me, but I think it fits quite well in your hand. However, any bigger, would definitely be rather uncomfortable.

On to the devices. The Lumia 610 and 900 will both be arriving in Australia next month. Upon launch, the 610 will be priced at AUD$329, and available with Boost Mobile, and later on with Vodafone in July. No comment was made regarding this 610 having NFC, so assume it doesn’t. The Lumia 900 will launch on Optus, next month, retailing for AUD$699. The Lumia 900, sadly for those wanting to get it on Telstra, will not support their 4G network. Although, it has HDSPA+ Dual Carrier support, compared to the Lumia 610 supporting HSDPA.

Colours of the Lumia 610 will range from glossy white and blue, to matte black and magenta. I like the way the bezel on the 610 is coloured to match the device. The Lumia 900 of course comes in glossy white, matte black and blue, with no confirmation of magenta. The matte black had a textured feel to it, very different to the 800, and seemed to be a lighter shade in my opinion.

After using the devices throughout the event, I found the Lumia 610 to be a little bit snappier, compared to the Lumia 900. Both of these will be launching with the latest update, “Tango”, and have WiFi tethering out the box. Great news for those who have been complaining that the Lumias are missing this feature. They both also have the new “Nokia Marketplace” logo.

The general feel seemed to be rather positive, especially towards the affordability of the Lumia 610, and impressed by the beauty of the White Lumia 900. At the event, there was a DC-16 charger getting lots of exposure and heaps of positive feedback. Hopefully we will see that come here, in the near future.

I should be getting a Lumia 610 and Lumia 900 fairly soon to review, so I will hopefully have a detailed video comparison soon.

If there is anything you want to know that I’ve left out, just comment or send me a tweet.

Michael

Thank you again for everyone who voted, it was simply amazing to even be considered amongst all the other nominees in our Nokia Community. This site is the collective effort not only of the writers, but also our readers that interact with our posts, those who share us news/stories/ideas to share with others and those who go on to share our posts with others. MyNokiaBlog would simply not be here at all without you. Thank you!

Because of you guys, we get to go to Finland! I saw we as where ever the blog goes, you are all there in some shape or form . It’s only quite right that you have a say in what we get to see and share with you, this includes organizing meetings with Nokia people.

Who do you have questions for?

What are your questions?

What parts of Nokia HQ do you want to see?

Any tips for travellers to Finland?

I thought I might miss the trip due to exams but Nokia kindly scheduled this trip around me. It was set for March, but that was cancelled for various reasons. It is now pretty much confirmed for June 4th, going back June 7th 2012, just after my summer exams.

Scrolling through Twitter and I saw a post on CNet. Apparently Nokia and Microsoft have joined together to create what they are calling “The Code Warrior”. This is a project aimed at both WP developers and users. Users and developers can submit app ideas, these ideas get voted up and developers can then battle out for the best app based on that idea. The more votes the idea gets, the better the prize.

At the moment, the prizes range from industry respect, to devices, and even to cash. The site isn’t fully live yet, just a sign up page. There will be a” 14-city Hack-a-thon” starting May 10. The event has its own page if you are keen

http://www.nokiadeveloper.eventbrite.com/

According to CNet,( I say according as I can’t find it) the event description is as follows;

The rules are simple. Build an app listed on the “bounty board”. Satisfying a bounty awards you the associated prize, and we will be putting up 100 Nokia Lumia devices per city as the initial prize pool. In addition, the top 3 created apps, top student created app, and best dressed Bounty Hunter (use your imagination!) will be awarded extra prizes.

Mark the date of September 25-26 on your calendar and book a trip to Helsinki!

Hopefully we won’t see attempts by certain manufacturers to have events at the same dates and locations, eh like in 2010 and almost in 2011. Haha.

If you are interested in going to Nokia World, there’s a link where you can drop the Nokia events team an email:

So a link from Nokia promoting Facebooks CES event… Interesting? There have been multiple rumors and reports of a “Facebook phone” which FB have continuously shot down

FBs official response to the rumors: Facebook is not building a phone. Our approach has always been to make phones and apps more social

There have also been some third party attempts at making FB phones (HTCs ChaCha comes to mind, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one EVER!- Maybe it’s the name? or just the crappy build quality?); regardless one could say this is exactly what FB meant, Nokia builds the phone and they do some Exclusive app thigny.

Ok, I’m going to let the gears start spinning and say something crazy that has absolutely no basis so turn back now if you want something with proof leave now (please don’t I spent alot of time writing this).

The facts:

Facebook will NOT be making a hardware phone

Nokia have freedom to customize WP more than any other manufacturer

WP is supposedly built around being more social (people hub and all) –> it’s one step closer to a FB friendly platform

A Facebook centered device is that something special that would make one standout amongst other devices running on the same platform.

So using my Sherlock Holmes like skills of deduction (who’s birthday is today! Happy Birthday Holmesy!!) My crazy guess would be that FB teamed up with Nokia to produce a Facebook centered Skinned version of WP (that’s where Nokias special relationship with Microsoft would come in).

Now that I’ve written it down it doesn’t seem so crazy anymore, almost all reviews of the Lumia 710 said that it needed that X-Factor to distinguish it from the rest, and so far from the leaked specs of the 900 it also seems to lack that special something (Internal-wise not design); after all almost all WP devices have the same inards, meaning so far the only REAL differentiating factor were Manufacturer preference (not Nokias strong suite in the US) and Design (thankfully Nokia got that part handsdown). By adding something besides that design that can only be found on a Nokia phone would truly give them an edge over any other WP device, as a matter of fact it would give them an edge over any other OS (It took FB almost two years to release a Tablet version of their app for the iPad, which was considering an achievement- imagine a whole phone with constant FB support!). Of course so far they’re have only been whispers about a second device that is to possibly be released at CES: The Lumia 719, could it be a FB phone? (it would make sense considering that a FB phone would HAVE to be a midrange device and not a high-end flagship).

Ok crazy speculations are done now- Normal service is resumed, now the sensible part of my brain says that everything I wrote above is almost impossible, for two main reasons: 1)- FB is a Ginormous business with loads of employees, we would have heard something of this before 2)- What would compel FB to join up with Nokia? (what would they benefit??)

Your thoughts are as always extremely welcome, am I crazy?? let me know below (include psychiatrist number please)

Nokia Mobile Blog Thnaks to KF for the tip!
