Apparently those who pre-ordered the Nokia 808 PureView in the UK from Clove will have to wait a little bit longer again. It was already moved from May to June. Not sure what’s going on.

We have today received information that the 808 will not be available for sale SIM-FREE through Clove until mid-late July.

Again I am not sure why but could it be related to this: Steve Litchfield says Nokia has not produced any retail Nokia 808 PureView yet. Well, there are already Nokia 808 PureViews seen by members of the public in UAE.

Creator of Gravity for Symbian, @janole asked Steve if he was sure. Steve said:

well I know they’re still tweaking the camera algorithms, video especially…

So UK stock is probably of least priority if other countries officially assigned will have to wait too.

Back in February, when Ali showed us a hands on of the 808 in the firmware we saw that what we were presented as Belle FP1 seemed to have been none other than Carla.

Most recently in a Q&A with a Nokia person, they said that FP1 is Carla too.

One can say that Symbian FP1 and Symbian Belle Carla or this latest update will be released in the coming months?

Then: Carla is no longer a name we use. FP1 is pretty much that was once called Carla.

It wasn’t that long ago after the Nokia 808 PureView launch that Gizmodo (Australia)  completely missed the point on what PureView was about – feeling it was marketing gimmick and that Nokia were simply ‘redefining the stupidphone’. But they were quick to admit they were wrong and just yesterday after trying it out first hand appeared to be blown away.

Gizmodo is on a roll right now trumpeting great technology when they hear about it, in a piece that thankfully takes the time to explain what PureView is about.

If Nokia can deliver results that are worth it, I think people can be willing to compromise on size. I mean, look at the SG Note. Obscene at first launch but now defining this ‘phablet’ for people who want that additional functionality in their phone. Why not have a slightly thicker phone at one end to always have that amazing camera and capture all those priceless memories with you?

Gizmodo notes that Nokia will be making slimmer devices with PureView. not necessarily in this combination (41MP) but the same underlying technology to deliver the highest quality in mobile imaging.

Here’s to Nokia, truly trying to deliver innovation that matters to the consumer. It’s not about just having bigger numbers, but really it’s all about giving the consumer the best audio/visual experiences – the highest photo quality – improvements where it counts.

To follow up on news that N8 and other first gen S^3 would get some form of Belle FP1/FP2, well here are some screenshots of that supposed Belle refresh.

It’s not quite the same. It has many of the elements though it’s missing others, such as activities and notifications bit on the drop down status bar.

Rather wobbly there. Not sure if it’s the person’s hands or if we need better stabilisation. As expected, shaking is even more pronounced/exaggerated when at the telephoto (zoom) end. It’s definitely quite something, especially when it can turn Gizmodo to say it’s a point and shoot and bridge cam killer.

Guess who else loves the PureView? Gizmodo! They’re not at all keen on the fact that it’s Symbian, but they do love the PureView camera.

• That camera is damn good -
• a camera with a phone attached
• Nokia’s camera app is pretty solid, with more options than you can shake a stick at.
• you can zoom right in for details you can’t even see with the naked eye.
• Zooming in reveals text on faraway buildings; the stalks of dandelions or even the woven detail of fabrics – it can be almost microscopic at times.
• Nokia’s lossless digital zoom, which works as advertised
• which is so much more intuitive (single finger zoom)
• The camera really is as impressive as Nokia’s claimed
• produces incredibly crisp and true-to-life 5MP shots, with digital zoom that rivals optical zooms
• full sensor size, you get incredibly-detailed images that are surprisingly crisp and rich all the way down to actual pixel size.
• Nokia’s really set the next benchmark for camera phone imaging
•  made compact cameras and maybe even bridge cameras obsolete.

Obviously, before anyone tries to suggest it, no these guys aren’t paid for such opinions. Clearly, they (SlashGear, Engadget and now Gizmodo) know a good thing when they see one and they’ve been praising Nokia for a while now.

Mat Smith from Engadget takes a look at the Nokia 808 PureView’s capabilities, comparing it even with the iPhone 4S and the HTC One S. Now one thing we did already note is the difference in quality between pictures from Engadget and SlashGear, thus indicating that differences may be human introduction. With Myriam and the new Engadget team, they’re a lot more aware now of how to use the cameras from Nokia and so can give a fairer representation on how they do.

Engadget’s Mat seems to be very pleased. Here are some choice quotes:

• this looks to be the new benchmark for mobile imaging
• Nokia 808 PureView is also capable of capturing a mind-boggling amount of small detail
• Nokia’s smartphone gave a far more realistic composition of the landscape picture we’ve cropped here from eight megapixels.
• One S seemed to focus better, its colors are a little oversaturated and that also adds some noise into the mix. (Note – remember some focusing issues in the cake picture, Engadget vs SlashGear? Not sure what might have been causing this)
• The lack of noise and superb sharpness truly stood out here.
• we found that Nokia’s PureView 808 seemed to focus in on the detail better than its rivals (interesting.)
•  we wish we had more time getting to grips with the 808 PureView
•  interface on the 808 PureView was far more accessible and quick especially compared to its iOS and Android rivals
• One-touch zoom on 5-megapixel images, by simply swiping across the display, is an addictive
• ability to hold your finger on the screen and change focus modes was also a boon
• browsing gallery previews and transitioning to the full images were swift

The difference in resolution would of course be even greater if the 808 was set to full resolution – although that would require optimum lighting conditions to show the extreme detail. PureView is more something that is ready for all conditions.
