Nokia X and all feature phones to be killed off in favour of Windows Phone
Along with laying off 18,000 over the next year, Microsoft will slowly be killing off all of the Nokia feature phone side of the business along with Nokia X.
The news comes from an internal memo sent out by Jo Harlow which reveals that the focus now is only on windows phone. Asha, Series 40 and Nokia X will shift to ‘maintenance mode’ and support will be shut down to existing devices over the next 18 months.
“This means there will be no new features or updates to services on any mobile phones platform as a result of these plans,” says Harlow, in the internal memo seen by The Verge.
Also MixRadio seems to be up for sale and has also been placed in ‘maintenance mode’ for the time being. So far, there is allegedly “strong interest” from potential buyers, so we could soon see MixRadio being run by a third party.
In the meantime, the company is focusing on the Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 and “and other high-end products that we will be announcing very soon.” Let’s hope that includes devices ranging from the low end right up to a show stopper at the high end.
