This application is a must have for anyone who travels frequently (or at all) on a train. Whenever I needed to travel by train, I used to go to www.thetrainline.com. You can access it from your S60 browser directly or you can choose the mobile version, m.thetrainline.com, which is more economic on the data and a little easier to use (though needing lots of page clicks).

This free application from S60dev.com goes one step further in making it easier to find your train times. No more loading up the browser and tapping in the bookmark or clicking through page after page.

MNB000081

Just type your details in, connect to your data…

MNB000082

And you get a list of available trains.

MNB000083

It’s currently only works in portrait mode. At least it doesn’t attempt to rotate and distort the page when you open the keyboard on the N97.

The only niggle would be inputting the date – it’s not hard but if it used the same style for putting the time in, that would be fantastic.

Other than that it’s a really great application and you should go get it now! >>Download from S60 Dev << It’s a free application, but I’m sure donations are more than welcome.

Some suggestions: -

  • History/Save search result – so you don’t have to input your details again if you just wanted to check again
  • Return option  – so you don’t have to input the opposite details

Free Game: Match’em for Nokia N97, 5800, and Samsung i8910

From moubail.com is this free “match’em game”, where the aim is to match multiple icons on the screen. It’s touch based (though a little flakey) but for N97 users you can also use the D-Pad. It’s a little harder than it looks, as you’ve got to put some thought into what order you’re going to start matching up.

To download it, click here to be redirected to moubail’s download page. Scroll down, download and send to your phone via bluetooth/cable or access the site from your phone directly.

And if you haven’t already,  you might also want to download the free checkers game too.

MNB000079

It works in both landscape and portrait.

Applications: Ovi Maps 3.0 (on the Nokia N97)

Ovi Maps 3.0 is the latest edition of Nokia’s free Sat-Nav software. Below is a screenshot taken from Ovi Maps 3.0 on the Nokia N97.

The improvements with Ovi Maps 3.0 are well worth the time to upgrade because the interface is much improved, requiring much less menu wading and button pressing than the previous Nokia Maps 2.0. Note the following:

  • [Top Right] My Location button. Pressing this red dot (inside the square) centres the map to your current location. When you move away from your location, as I have, it will show you the arrow of your location and how far away you are from it. It disappears once the other red dot (indicating your GPS location) is visible on the map.
  • [Bottom] Search Button. Pressing the magnifying glass allows you to either search for an address or categories of places. As with 2.0, this is most/only useful when you have an internet connection.
  • [Top] Location bar . Pressing gives you a range of options to do with named location: Walk/Drive, show details, add to route, send location and explore. This is a very simple change but makes so much difference in terms of making actual navigation and using Ovi Maps so much easier.
  • Only an options button is available. No toolbar to waste space, or exit button to press accidentally.
  • Kinetic scrolling of some sort. If you flick the map, it moves slightly, gradually slowing down to a stop instead of just stoping the moment you lose contact with the screen.
  • Zoom bar on the left. For me, that is a better location as a right handed user, it makes for less accidental zooming in/out. As with before, you can either hold + to zoom in, or – to zoom out. Alternatively, a downward swipe zooms you out, and an upward swipe zooms you in.
  • Compass. As with Nokia Maps 2.0 on the N97, after around a minute, this gets a lock and rotates your map to match the actual alignment of the streets/roads/you.
MNB000028
Basic view, no location set.

From the options button, you get a similar standard menu as the previous Nokia Maps 2.0. Some worthwhile additions include:

  • History. -  Locations previously  navigated to (walk/drive to)
  • Favourites – Access your saved landmarks or routes, plus Sync your favourites with Ovi
  • Dashboard – gives quick GPS info of speed, pace, altitude and GPS coordinates, and changes when you’re in the middle of navigation, giving you trip distance, time, average speed, total distance, time and total average speed.

In action, Ovi Maps 3.0 turns your N97 or other compatible phone into a very capable Sat-Nav device. Directions for driving/walking appear pretty much instantly and you’re off on your way. The interface has been given a slight rehaul which makes it much more finger friendly on touch devices such as the N97.

Note, though none of the screenshots show GPS lock, that’s because they were taken within a couple of seconds of the app starting. The N97 is pretty quick at getting a GPS signal when outside. (Though there is a slight delay when in a vehicle)

Video: Turning your Nokia N97 into an iPhone with MyPhone

Jason from Smashpop.net shows us the MyPhone app on the Nokia N97. We’ve seen the MyPhone application before, turning Nokia 5800s into iPhone-esque wannabes, but here’s a video showing how it would look on your N97.

Maybe you couldn’t decide between the iPhone 3GS or the N97? Perhaps this is the solution?

N97 hardware – QWERTY keyboard, higher resolution widescreen, 5MP camera and expandable memory but with an iPhone-like “simpler” user interface.

Aha. Well it’s not exactly iPhone OS’ infamous UI, but it’s the closest Symbian’s S60 UI is going to get to it. For Now. You get the:

  • fancy slide to unlock
  • flicking between app pages
  • the option to have a 4×5 grid instead of S60’s wasteful 3×4.

Priced at £12.99, if you want to try it out for free first, you can download the trial >>here<<

Applications: MyPhone 2.11 making your Nokia more iPhone-like

Here’s another look at the MyPhone application, this time updated to version 2.11.

stage12

Active slide to unlock with S60 5th edition

MyPhone v2.11 is compatible both with S60 3rd and 5th edition handsets, turning your compatible phone into an iphone-esque gadget.

Take a look at these two videos of  MyPhone v2.10 on the Nokia 5800

You’ll get that plus the updates with v2.11, which are::

  • Add unlimited icons for 3rd part apps and bookmark links

myp1

  • Hold and drag pages for 5th os models

Becoming more iPhone like – instead of an animated flick transition, the pages have a more “paper-like” interaction, i.e. you drag a page slightly left, it moves slightly left – hold in position – it stops.  Nice.

  • More background images
  • Fixed some bugs reported by fans & users

Priced at £12.99, if you want to try it out for free first, you can download the trial here..

Freeware: Stopwatch/Countdown with Time Machine for Nokia 5800 and S60 5th Edition

timemachine The Time Machine app for the Nokia 5800 is both a stop watch and a countdown timer. When the countdown reaches zero, an alarm sounds. Pretty useful if  you’re cooking something or as a parking meter alert. Yeah, you can use the general alarm clock but it’s easier to put in “n” minutes countdown and constantly see throughout how many minutes you have left.

There’s a dedicated app for S60 third edition called Parking Buddy just for countdown – it’s even got a nifty siren as an alarm that made my friend pull over on the side of the road when she thought it was an actual police car. This is a nicer solution given that it does both countdown and stop watch.

A friend of mine recommended I use stop watches for revision – to actually tally the amount I’m spending revising as opposed to sitting on my arse looking like I’m revising.

If you want a count down for sport/running you’ll be better off with Nokia Sports Tracker, as that logs your GPS route, speed, altitude, steps taken as well as your Lap times.

Anyway, Time Machine for 5800 is available to download for free from my-symbian.com

Free S60 5th Edition “Game”: Dice throwing for the 5800

The author of this first application admits its not very useful, but as you can see from the video below, it demonstrates the sensitivity of the 5800’s accelerometer. It actually works OK too as a replacement for a dice, with motion sensor dependent rotation and fairly good animation for three hours of work.

Download this application here.

Via creabros

Here’s an alternative dice throwing application; there’s no visuals of the dice moving as you assume that happens under the box. You do get an animated slide cover, plus the phone vibrates as you shake the box. Because there’s two (and you can put more) die, you can actually use this in place of real die, i.e. in a board game like monopoly.

Free Application: PhoneTorch for 5800 (and other S60 5th Edition with LED flash)

The time when you need torches the most is when they’re hardest to get to – in a black out (or brown out as they oddly call it in the Philippines). And looking for a torch is only useful if you actually own one to start with. No point trying to find the torch to check what’s rolled under your bed/sofa if you haven’t even got a torch.

Here’s a FREE application that allows Nokia 5800 owners to use the white and red LED flash as a torch.

It has a simple start/stop, switch colour mode and even the ability to convert your text into morse code flash! How brilliant is that? But now all you need is for someone else to be able to understand morse code (although it maybe useful in certain emergency situations where a flashing light maybe the only way to contact for help…such as attracting a boat if you’re desserted on an island, because that’s very likely to happen)

Now if only we can return to the intuitiveness of the likes of the N93’s dedicated flash/torch button.

Applications: MyPhone 2.10 – 5800 becomes more like an iPhone

The MyPhone application, infamous for turning the 5800 (now any s60 5th edition phone, i.e. N97, i8910) into iPhone wannabes has gone another step further with this update by bringing us 4×5 columns as an option.

3x4 on myphone, still gets you 3 more icons than the standard UI menu - ZOMGitsCJ

4×5 grid option allowing 8 more applications to be viewed at one time – ZOMGitsCJ

I wish S60 5th edition supported this natively, or like this application at least gave you the option. Not only is screen realty wasted by having just 12 icons on the page instead of 20, we get this silly fat options bar on the side. Back and options – couldn’t that have been accomplished by the green and red button? The only time that sidebar is useful is within applications, music/browsing (and in browsing it’s often better when it hides itself so you can use it full screen)

5800-landscape-tb-480x360

Current menu wastes at least 3 icon spaces with the fat side bar at wastes 8 icon spaces by not having a 4x5 grid - Slashgear

So, already, the MyPhone application is not just for people wanting their 5th edition S60 handsets to look more like Apple’s wonder child, but for others who want a more functional and space efficient menu.

On top of previous features, like the working unlock swipe/iPhone dialer screen etc, new features now include a sketch pad and autolock.
