Near-final N8 firmware run through

August 27, 2010 Andre 55 comments

With rumors circling the internet that the final, release version of the N8 firmware is scheduled to be finished by next week (crosses fingers) The latest video that I found on the site, http://tv.mediaprovider.se should hopefully give a pretty clear insight into the sort of performance and applications (read: games) we can expect to see when the N8 is FINALLY released. From the little available here, there should be few doubts in anyone’s mind as to whether this device will be sluggish, unperforming and underwhelming at release.

Give it a look and tell me what you think!

Youtube link to the 1st video! Thanks NeNoRmAl!

Update: Another video was taken on the 25th of August, just 2 days ago. The video demonstrates a few of the normal features available with the OS.

Give it a look.

C7 preview

August 26, 2010 Andre 47 comments

The all knowing Eldar has posted another preview of a Nokia device, this time the S^3 powered C7. As is customary he speaks little to the functionality and more to the flashiness of the interface, once again stamping on it’s lack of novelty or spice.

His conclusion?

“Those who are accustomed to Symbian and know this OS will find the model attractive. It offers few interesting games, austere and outdated interface. Taken together it means that Nokia C7 will not attract new customers, but Nokia fans will choose it quite consciously. After all it is the best value for money on Symbian S^3.”

Give it a read if so inclined at the link below.

Pixelpipe on the N8

August 24, 2010 Andre 12 comments

Stumbled across this video on dailymobile showing an upgraded pixelpipe application with the ability to upload not just pictures and videos to a variety of online services  such as picasa and facebook but also regular files such as PDF’s to dropbox accounts.

Give it a look!

P.S. No information on the size of the files that can be uploaded using pixel pipe.

Could one upload full HD videos to youtube this way?!

Wooo, a bit of a shocker Nokia have released today, the X3-01 was leaked a while ago but no one expected it to be touch screen button tag team combo. It has caused a bit of a stir on the internets.

  • 5 megapixel camera with 4 time digital zoom
  • dedicated messaging and music buttons
  • New ovi store
  • In selected markets it will be offered with Ovi Music limited

Nokia N8 v Samsung Omnia HD multitasking

iPhone owners look away now, here is an interesting look at the Nokia N8 being compared to the Samsung Omnia HD doing PROPER multitasking. I have got to admit the Samsung’s multitasking is pretty funky

thanks to KaiwanGailan for the heads up !!!

Nokia 5250 pictured clearly

Some clear pictures of a rumoured Nokia 5230 have appeared, first time I have actually heard of this phone it is probably based on Symbian 1 but looks decent a bit like the Sony ericsson X8 the slightly smaller version to the X10.

BTW I thought Nokia had stopped using this naming convention

thanks to Keith for the heads up

Nokia C6 Review: The good, the bad and the smart

August 8, 2010 Sergejs Cuhrajs 24 comments

Introduction

Ever since it’s release under the Nokia’s Cseries branding, the Nokia C6 was bound to attract some attention. And for a good reason. The budget price range is quite unusual for what it offers in return: attractive design, a touchscreen enforced with a slide-out qwerty keyboard and all the connectivity you can eat, including voice guided GPS navigation. With a few caveats, it’s not difficult to spot the simple yet beautiful concept behind the  Nokia C6 – you get what you see, without going into overdrive with expenses.

Symbian 3 is finished

Symbian 3, Nokia’s latest baby was officially completed on June 17th, of course that doesn’t mean the N8 is coming tomorow. It means all the new features and improvements have been added, now the hard work of testing and tweaking begins, the boring bit basically but a bit Nokia needs to get right to avoid the debacle that was the N97 at launch last year. Symbian 3 includes 250 new features and nokia’s official blog listed some more of the important features here :

Some notable improvements and new features

  • Better Graphics Graphics have been given a boost with a new graphics architecture, hardware acceleration and faster software that improves some of the shiny bits in the OS such as Kinetic scrolling and cover flow styling in the music app
  • Multitouch A very important feature that Nokia phones have lacked and is finally available. The Symbian UI allows flicks, pinch and zoom and single taps to select :-) . It also means that multiple fingers can be used to operate which means certain tasks like when typing on an on screen keyboard, so sounds like the N8 does have multitouch keyboard. Possibilities are endless with what you can do with multitouch it all depends if Nokia wants to into that direction and introduce new gestures that el jobso hasn’t patented  yet :-) .
  • Better Multitasking Everyone knows that Symbian is the ONLY mobile OS to offer TRUE mobile multitasking none of the save the state of the app rubbish and well the Symbian foundation have improved it with better memory managment so you can leave more apps open without running out of memory and get more stuff done
  • Location services New protocols have been added in the OS to take better advantage of the location data. A new app set to debut is Here and Now which offers services according to the location you are in at any given moment of time.
  • Networking The Symbian OS includes a new networking architecture that improves a whole lot such as the data flow performance, easier for services to create networking extras such as fire walls and hotspot log in apps. One click connectivity has also been included to make it easier to connect to access points.
  • Development for Developers Symbian will come with Qt installed (so get developing developers :-) ) Makes it easier for you developers to develop apps for as Nokia phones as possible. The Symbian web runtime will also let developers create Web 2.0 style applications that interact with the devices core functions like the camera and address book.via

Freeware: Weight Tracker by OffScreen – Free on Ovi Store

July 27, 2010 Jay Montano 4 comments

Here’s a free app available on the Ovi Store that I’ll definitely be using on a day to day basis.

It’s called Weight Tracker. As you can guess it tracks your weight. The interface is simple and easy to use. Basically each day, just turn the scale to your current weight, be it in lbs or kg.

You can’t however, fill in your future weight :p, only up to the current date (screenshots taken yesterday as I’m on my way to Heathrow Airport right now)

Apologies in advance for not having proper screenshots – it was playing up with the screenshot app so had to use my digicam (wish I used N82 instead, much better for phone screenshots)

CLICK HERE to download from the Ovi Store

It will automatically convert to either with a switch.

You can scroll the calendar to check out your weight, or even fill in weights of dates missed. What’s really cool is that in landscape mode, a chart appears that tracks your previous weight levels.

Similarly this can be done in either lbs or kg. You have to switch back to portrait to switch though.

As a tip:

  • measuring in pounds/lbs will often allow you to be more accurate and notice bigger changes from day to day
  • Weigh yourself at similar times to prevent the weight fluctuations due to food coming in…and obviously, processed digested matter coming out :p
  • Weigh yourself in similar clothing (nekkid maybe preferable but do it in your own home, not at the scales at your health shop or gym :p)
  • General health tips

I’ll be using Weight Tracker during my holiday to lose some darned weight I picked up. I want to wear the nice shirts I bought a couple of years back dammit when I could comfortably fit an M and not the dreaded L. :( Darned Uni take aways!

Whilst tracking your weight won’t directly help you lose (or gain) weight but tracking (like with expenses) helps keep an eye on any progress, alerting you if you’re going off in the wrong direction (gaining more weight in my case) and encouraging you to see your results.

Exercise and healthy eating ftw ^_^
