The BH-905 makes a pretty good partner for the N97 which has been said to have stellar voice quality, trumped only by the N91.

When you thing of a good headphone manufacturer, one of the last you may come up with is Nokia. But they maybe creating a new reputation for themselves amongst audiophiles with the upcoming Nokia BH905- which Nokia claim to be the ultimate headset.

bh-905

As a headset (and not just headphone) in addition to music, you can also take phone calls – and if it’s anything like previous Nokia headsets, will transition seamlessly from voice call to your songs, and all easily manageable with the host of dedicated controls on this device.

nokia-bh-905-airplane-plugThe first thing I really liked about the BH-905 is in addition to being able to connect to your music via stereo bluetooth, you’ve also got the option to go wired with the provided cable. This means that not only can you hook it up to pretty much anything, particularly since it’s supplied with several adaptors but that with the option to go wired, you can extend usage time (up to 40 hours)- useful on a long haul flight – connect to the airline’s audio system whilst active noise cancelling drowns out the noise of the engines..and/or crying babies.

What’s even better, and came unexpected, is the BH-905’s focus on noise cancelling and audio quality. Check out the video below by Nokia Conversations:

The BH-905 has active noise cancelling, containing 10 microphones of which 8 are used for extreme noise reduction.

The more common method of noise cancelling is passive, requiring a vacuum tight insulation to prevent sound. (In utmost basic terms) with active noise cancelling, as ambient sound is received through a microphone, a signal is generated to create interference which “cancels” out the ambient noise. Nokia’s previous headsets have had one speaker to do this – the BH-905 has 8 to further reduce the noise.

The other two microphones are for voice calls – which in addition to other 8 microphones for noise cancelling means that the receiver of your call should experience a crystal clear call with a lot of the ambient noise cut out. No more screaming down the phone because the environment around you is too loud.

Styling wise, it’s like the old BH-604 but not as overtly plastic. The black/chrome/brushed silver combination is always welcome, looking pretty much like much of the Bose headphone line up.

Availability and Price

The BH-905 will be available in August 09. As for price – now here’s where you have to be a serious audiophile  (or just loaded): 285 Euros! Whilst that’s probably just an entry level price for the real elite audiophiles, it’s one of (if not the) most expensive Nokia accessory to date.

Accessories: Zipper earphones!

Everyone who’s ever used earphones has experienced the dreaded tangled coiled wires. From the very cheapest to the more audiophile centric flavours, they all suffer from spontaneous self knotting as if it was sentient and just wanted to annoy you.

There’s a few solutions out there to prevent tangled wiring, but none as practical and effective a concept as this, by designer, Ji Woong.

yi_earphones

What’s more, the handle of the slide not only changes the length of the left and right cord as you please (often fixed in most alternatives) but it also functions as a remote control!yi_earphones4I would definitely buy one of these. I’ve gone through a lot of earphones in one year, and apart from the washing machine incident, the main reason for replacement was cable wear/tear. One of my favourites is my Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 EB – it has replaceable cables but this makes it vulnerable to randomly detaching from the phones. It’s very annoying and although useful for easy replacement of the cord, wrecks the phone bit so much there’s no point!

This zipper idea is great, looks super durable (as long as they get the teeth/track right), would solve the coiling issue and also looks quite quirky. Perhaps it could even be integrated into clothing…? Maybe not… would be annoying to get stuck wearing one jacket/hoodie/coat if you want to use those earphones – moreover, whatabout washing?

Bluetooth 3.0 coming April 21st

bluetooth_rings_lgYour phone most likely has Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, capable of achieving 3Mbit/s speeds within about a 10 metre range.

Bluetooth 3.0 is expected to have up to 480Mbit/s transfer rates and with Generic Alternate MAC/PHY (AMP) may allow for WiFi over Bluetooth.

I transfer all my phone media to my computer via Bluetooth. Just select my laptop and send. Only ever waiting a few minutes, at times it does get annoying when I have to wait a while when I’ve got large video files.

But the whole no wires and minimal clicks to send is just so appealing.

How much more convenient when we have such huge transfer speeds? Not just for sending files to computers but sending files to other BT 3.0 phones.

But would I have to be more weary about always leaving my BT on? There’s been scares before with people trying to hack/send viruses or steal information via bluetooth. How much more worrying is it that someone could just swipe GBS of personal information and media in seconds!

Considering changing N82 fascia/housing? Your own Black N82.

Changing housing used to be something top Nokia models did in their prime (3310, 7210, 7610) with ease. They were intended to be easily user replaceable with the pay off that you tend to lose some build quality due to the removable parts.

Nseries focused slightly more towards build quality thus dropped the exchangeble fascia scheme. Since they didn’t focus on build quality too much, inevitabley your phone gets scuffed, scratched or worse but unlike the 3310 and the like, you can’t just whip on a fresh new cover.

With the N95 however, it was surprisingly easy, albeit with a tool for the front cover, as the back came off with ease as if it was intended for it. On eBay, you can find a selection of colours from the original available to non standard, such as blue and gold.

You can also find N82 covers on eBay which could lead you (it did me) to think that it’s similar to the N95 in what is essentially a simple shell of a cover.

NO it isn’t.

To replace the N82 cover yourself, you must prepare yourself for some major surgery. Disassembling is not recommended unless you have done it before as it is very complicated and can easily lead to an N82 looking paper weight.

Here’s a video showing you step by step of dissasembling the N82

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a black N82 housing set just to see if they’re up to scratch (non OEM from eBay). It arrived this morning. Unless I become significantly bored (and brave), I’m not going to replace the cover myself. But here’s some thoughts and pictures of it.

Tools

Crystal casing

Actual Black N82:

Whilst not as sleek as the completely black N82, it’s a pretty good imitation, not bad for under £10 with P&P. The tools required are provided, with additional extras of the crystal case and an LCD “filter”. Micro SD card door is black as well as the opposing side keys, with just the silver shutter button.

The cover itself feels robust. The finish looking surprisingly good, matte at the sides, glossy at the front, with slightly darker brushed metal effect on the camera. The only error I can detect at the moment (apart from the obviously mismatching front keypad) is the printing of the numbers/letters as they have shifted of a couple of milimetres. The spring assisted lens cover also feels very similar but as with the whole package, only time will tell if it is fit enough for every day and prolonged use.

Please note that changing the cover yourself will void your warranty. Should you be so eager or even require a change in cover, consult a Nokia repair centre who would also provide OEM covers (at a price).

If anyone has changed the housing of their N82, I’d love to see how you got on.

P.S. If like mine,  the front is scratched, this can be relatively easily removed and exchanged without touching the internals of the phones. Again, unless you’ve done this kind of thing before, DO NOT ATTEMPT CHANGING THE WHOLE COVER.

Also, the weakest thing in this package is the fake SS-93 tool. As I’ve just found out, the tip breaks easily. Do not use this as you will break your N82.

Setting off tomorrow!

I haven’t even got half way through looking at my notes for my final exam yet, so I’m rushing this post out.

Everything’s all set, devices all charged and packed into one of the N82 boxes:

It may look a mess, but they’re all resting at their designated positions (keyboards top left, proporta charger top right, along with BH 701 etc etc.)

Received another package today, the LD-3W Wireless GPS module if I’m ever in too remote a location for the N82’s internal GPS module.

Package contents includes:

1 x in car charger

1 x BL-5C battery

1 x double sided sticky foam

1 x Nokia Bluetooth LD-3W GPS module.

Thanks for the comments and tips on previous posts, especially the warning about the upload limit on ShoZu for YouTube. I’ll try to keep the video length/file size minimum (about 30 seconds/3mb) and try to post them often. In order to do that, I’ll reduce the recording quality.

This wordpress blog may be the last to get updated as the journey progresses, so keep an eye on:

2 Days to go…Sports Tracker site. . . N800 says no?

January 23, 2008 at 7:19 pm | In Accessories, Nokia, Nseries, Urbanista | Leave a Comment

This post is being written on the N800 via SU-W8 keyboard.

Now I’ve had another SU-W8 for a year and my gripes are still the same: There’s sufficient width to acommodate a real QWERTY keyboard but instead the top line is fused with both the numbers/letters/symbols. I know there’s a battery there and it is quite a relatively old accessory, but consumers won’t care for excuses when they’ll be buying products. They’ll just get the one which better suits their needs, i.e. Not the one with the excuse (just remembering the reasoning from several Nokia product managers at Nokia world when questioned as to why some of their products were leaving out simple things such as an external hot swap card port)

Hopefully, it’s something I’ll get used to as I’m forced to use it as my only way of text input other than the understandably slower touch input.

Today, straight after my exam I played about with the latest update to sports tracker: 1.70. It kept on crashing after installation last night but it seems to have settled down now. On the n82 side, GPS is still reasonably fast and maintains a good connection through out.

Here’s the link to my ‘workout’. Since maps can only zoom in so much, pictures taken in close viciniity just blur on the map placement so that’s something I’ll have to try and avoid.

Link

I actually had to cheat to get that link as my N800 wouldn’t load the sports tacker page properly. (Emailed it to myself and opened from N800…I’m determined to post using this device)It was just perpetually saying it was “loading data” even after being left for 10 minutes. The same page worked via WLAN though so…hunting for free WLAN maybe my only way of personally editing the picture descriptions for sports tracker.

I’ll leave you now with just pictures of the BH-701…it’s even more piratey with its chain.

After a few days of use, I’ll let you guys know what I think about it.

(Post edit: oooh…I’m going to miss my lappy, haha)

Jazz Man at Santa Monica Pier, LA by N93

October 9, 2007 at 8:14 pm | In 3rd edition, Accessories, Nokia, Nseries, Symbian, Video | 2 Comments

Footage of Santa Monica Pier’s Jazz Man, filmed by the Nokia N93, mounted on a DT-22 tripod.

The N93’s form factor makes it a brilliant video camera, and the tripod gives it the stability to show off what the N93 can do (i.e no jelly wobble that Nseries video taking devices seem to suffer from).

The DT-22 I’ve found also works as a counter balance boom, so that when you’re on the move, it sort-of keeps the N93 steady whilst giving extra reach and odd angles. The most useful part of the DT-22 is just the vice-grip bit. This can be attached onto any other tripod with the universal size screw bit, my favourite of tripods being the gorilla pod as that can attach anywhere, literally.

Mr Burland of the Nokia Creative and his editing skills will be doing something special with this footage along with some he’s taken himself. Look out for this soon.

As for me, there should be one final personal post about the Nseries aftermath, aka day after stuff and then seriously back to Nokia news, rants and reviews. Oh, and there’s gonna be a new writer. Discussed it during the Nseries LA event with this guy but should be able to sort this out within this week.

Thanks for reading My Nokia Blog!

Phew, been away from the mobile world a bit to concentrate on the realms outside. Whilst I have my first batch of free time, I’m gonna recap on the Nseries LA event – the actual evening – before I continue the Nokia blog posts.

1: Journey to the Mansion:

Off the bus, onto Nokia Nseries buggies! These were equiped with GPS, and travelled across a very narrow, dangerous road with no side barriers so a missed GPS lock signal could have lead to our deaths.

They played the most overplayed song ever, Moby’s In My Heart.

The Nseries Mini:

Nseries Box: I really like that white BH-501. Hmm, I wonder how the N95-8GB would look in iPod white?

WTF? LOL

Oh the wonder…N800s galore!

BL-6F apparently NOT fitting into N95

Oh, But it does.

Love that N95 8GB.

I thought I took way more photos than this. Everytime someone took a photo, I thought I took one also. You’ve probably more or less seen these shots already but here’s my perspective of it.

The night was a success, lol, for the majority of it it was really cool. Felt a bit deflated after a few things one I’ll mention being no product launches (N82, where art thou?).

Thoughtfix, Dan, was doing some fantastic dancing, can’t find any pics of clips though, but he certainly got the attention at the dance floor.

I met up GWAPZ and Kevlarman only on the bus back, lol, didn’t realise they were who they were. Kinda fell asleep aslo on the shoulder of Mobile-Review’s Eldar on the journey back. Feeling real tired now like I did on that night! haha! So, pics of remaining WOMWorld attendies will be up on the next post.

Nokia N95 with 1200mAh BL-6F battery! It’s possible!

September 28, 2007 at 4:36 pm | In 3rd edition, Accessories, Rant, Rumours, S60, Symbian | 38 Comments

Since the very beginning we’ve been told that the reason the N95-3 and N95-8GB’s shutter was removed was due to the larger battery.

Even though I saw the N95-8GB at London, the model I tested did not have the BL-6F for me to find out wheter it could fit or not. But I was amongst many others that were peeved that they didn’t do something simpler like redesign the back or even the battery to accomodate that extra space needed.

Yesterday at the Nseries event at LA mansion (pics will be uploaded soon) station reps and even the Product Manager said confirmed the same thing about BL-6F is not for the N95 due to size constrainsts.

Recently, due to the shoddy state of my N95 battery cover, I posted a rant about the possibility of using a larger battery on the N95-ORIGINAL, now with the extra space provided by the crystal case that kept the useless battery cover on.

Due to Nokia claiming that the camera shutter cover prevented the BL-6F from fitting, I believed them, and thought that they should have redesigned the battery instead. But even that’s not needed! Look what I found out last night!

Yup, that’s right! It fits! Current N95 original users may be able to use the higher capacity BL-6F if you wanted to (albeit with the use of a crystal case – which is perfect for me since I have to use the crystal case )

r

It’s a perfect fit! The only thing I’m not sure about is whether this would pose any long term problems down the line, since size seems not to be the problem, there may have been another reason not to have included the BL-6F in the N95 original.

I’ve asked to test out the battery to see if there will be any problems, so as a disclaimer, be warned that the BL-6F was not designed for the N95 original and you may put your own N95 at risk by using that battery.

As a power user though, I’m very happy.

  • Longer music playback,
  • Longer video playback,
  • Longer calls
  • GPS use for longer time is feasible(no more, I’ll stay lost otherwise I won’t be able to make a call)
  • Longer camera use!

The crystal case I am using is from ebay. For about £2 I think, you get 3 sets (you only need the back). They are pretty sturdy, but be warned also that they may break (mine hasn’t, only at parts due to my strap, which most people do not have on their N95).

Darla Mack has already performed extensive battery tests with her N95-3 (US) that uses BL-6F and results are very positive as to how much more juice we can expect from the BL-6F and the original N95.

So exactly what does this mean? It means that Nokia listened to the requests of their users and improved the battery!

Now the next request would be to make a similar battery for existing N95 users.

Wooo! We can, Darla!

Here’s a video demo to show the N95 working nicely with the BL-6F

N95 Rant: Battery covers/Bigger Batteries/New back cover

September 27, 2007 at 1:57 pm | In Accessories, Nokia, Nseries, Rant | 6 Comments

I mentioned when first testing the N95 beta, that sooner or later I would have problems with the stupid frail plastic hooks intented by Nokia to keep your battery cover in place.

Due to the relatively weak battery of the N95, it’s a must to carry a spare battery. Swapping batteries often whilst in a rush to get your N95 back in action probably puts undue pressure on the feeble battery cover hooks. Inevitably, one bent too far and broke off.

I didn’t think much about that since it still stayed on. Two days later, another one broke off, putting more stress on the remaining 4 hooks.

Only 10 days ago, my N95 received her first major injury. To add insult to injury and several phone crashes later forced me to manually reset via battery removal. I’m not sure how it happened, but when I opened up the cover, all but one hook remained! Gah!

The only way I can keep my battery from falling out is with a crystal case.

I’ve heard of others in similar positions who’ve also been put in a situation where they needed to buy spare battery covers.

Mobilefun.co.uk is one of many sellers (this one UK based) for spare parts, should you need any for your Nokia. (No I’m not sponsored by them :P ) Here’s an appropriate spare battery cover.
The N95 8GB, and I think the N95-3 (US) will not have this problem, since they use short thicker stubs that hopefully should not break. Really though, it should have been like this in the first place.

A couple of things came to mind though when using the crystal case again on my N95.

1. The case adds a mm or two of extra thickness. Basically, this means it’s as thick or slightly thicker than the N95 8GB. The N95 8GB/N95-3 had their camera cover removed apparently to accomodate the bigger battery.

However, looking at the picture (above) you can see that had Nokia DESIGNED A DIFFERENT BATTERY that could still fit in the original N95’s body albeit without the battery cover, the original N95 could have had the potential* to utilise a larger capacity battery too WHILST keeping the camera cover since an accessory as simple as a crystal case could have given that extra needed space.

(*Something mobileburnforum member, difenbaker, mentioned when the N95 8GB proto review was posted)

…they should’ve done something that can be incorporated into the old design. NOT totally redesign it, or do something that cannot be done on the old one!

Link

2. The N95 has fully replaceable back covers. Instead of just swapping the battery cover, I could swap completely for a new colour, Plum/graphite/pink? lol.

The crystal case also shows potential for what a clear cover could look like. It looks cool, no?
