Lightning storm? Why not charge your Nokia phone?
What’s Nokia been up to these days you ask? well they’re harnessing lightning!
Nokia Conversation just published a crazy article about an experiment they’ve been working on with the University of Southampton, they’re harnessing lightning and using it to charge a Nokia Lumia 925!
“We were excited by this challenge presented to us by Nokia,†Neil explained. “Using an alternative current, driven by a transformer, over 200,000 volts was sent across a 300mm gap – giving heat and light similar to that of a lightning bolt. The signal was then stepped into a second controlling transformer, allowing us to charge the phone.â€
What happened next surprised even the scientists, and Neil adds: “We were amazed to see that the Nokia circuitry somehow stabilized the noisy signal, allowing the battery to be charged in only seconds.†[Talk about a lightning connecter :D]
Still in a world where wireless chargers are still a commodity, don’t expect to be charging your phone with this any time soon, Neil Palmer a scientist at the University of Southampton explains:
“This discovery proves that the device can be charged with a current that passes through the air, and is a huge step towards understanding a natural power like lightning and harnessing its energy,â€
Not only does this experiment speaks volume of the creative circuitry Nokia puts in their phones, it also shows how Nokia aren’t done innovating and their R&D will be able to entertain us for a long time to come.
Enjoy the video which also features some footage out of the Lumia 1020 an electric yellow one. 😀
I love how they managed to get a yellow mount for the 1020

P.S If you live in an area with enough lightning bolts to actually use this technology to charge your phone daily you should move 😀
Thanks for reading.Â
