Video: Coming to Ovi Maps? 3D Navigation maps accelerated with OpenGL ES 2.0.

Nokia’s Ovi Maps has a feature called 3D landmarks (and 3D view mode). The rest of the (NAVTEQ) maps is fairly flat with silhouettes of buildings/houses.

Now Imagine that the entire Maps system navigation experience had full 3D, with every building rendered to the correct proportion. This would be a great next step to Ovi Maps (as well as the whole Augmented reality thing mentioned by Jo Harlow)

Here’s a video from ARM showing 3D navigation running on OpenGL ES 2.0. It’s set in London, and you can even see that the Thames water is animated.

In future this will be upgraded with higher quality textures.

So…eventually it’s going to be a bit like real life GTA.  But no running over pedestrians or shooting cops please.

…whilst we’re on the subject of videos from ARM and Nokia check out this. You’ve probably seen it already but if you haven’t it’s a must watch.
