Just shortly after the 1.2 Billion USD acquisition of Motorola wireless assets, Nokia Siemens Networks yesterday won a 7 Billion USD contract to create and maintain a LTE network called LightSquared on behalf of Harbinger Capital Partners (HCP).

This network will consist of 40,000 base stations, which by 2015 will cover 92% of the US.

Philip Falcone, Founder and CEO of HCP said,

“…demand for wireless broadband is growing at a rapid pace and there is an increasing need for additional network capacity and reach. Importantly, LightSquared will also make a significant contribution to U.S. job growth and the economy.”

LightSquared has appointed Orange Exec, Sanjiv Ahuja as Chairman and CEO. Another former Orange Executive , LightSquared’s Marketing Chief, Frank Boulben, expects to reach cash-flow break even a couple of years before the end of the NSN contract and so financial requirements will peak at 5 Billion USD. 1.75 Billion USD are from unnamed financial investors and a second round of financing during the next two years.

Baltimore, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Denver will be the first test areas
