N8 as a possible HTPC

| August 29, 2010 | Comments (0)

We all remember way back in April when one of Nokia’s product managers did a short hands-on with the N8 and demonstrated the ability to connect to bluetooth devices such as a keyboard.

Well we’ve gotten a tip on another video demonstrating a rather similar set-up. A regular old Nokia SU-8W bluetooth keyboard and a Logitech M555b bluetooth mouse were connected simultaneously to the N8 and then used to interact with the UI, type messages and calendar events etc. Given the already known ability to hook the N8 up to HDTV’s via HDMI. We could be looking at the first veritable HTPC that fits in the pocket.

That video is over 2 months old. Here’s the original (available in 720p) from June:

As long as someone works out how to connect PS3 controllers and we have emulators, I will be happy.

SNES games played through HDMI out on my 37″ YES PLEASE!! :)

  3. nocare says:

snes emulator based in qt is being developed

    http://www.summeli.fi

would be great if n8 support wii and ps3 controllers

  4. nocare says:

is the top and bottom ends of n8 made of high quality hard plastic? is its surface rough or smooth? can we buy red color ends to match the black color body?

Exciting nokia world is coming toward us in two weeks, i hope all the leaked phone is the very very early prototype design, beause there are so much room for phone design. That leaked e7 looks fine, but that leaked n9 is not,

  5. rizal2gb says:

It will look nice if nokia N8 built with Android OS, because android os is so easy and really fast.

    • Andre says:

      GO AWAY!
I don’t want to hear this on my own blog too.

    • Keith says:

Seriously? Android comes nowhere near the power of symbian. Symbian has more possibilities than symbian and is much faster. Symbian^3 is smooth as silk and symbian^4 will be even better.
And I’m with Andre on this. You should go away from here. We don’t need trolls like you who don’t understand anything about smartphones.

      • so for you anyone likes android is stupid and doesn’t understand nothing about smartphone?! Pls stop with this fanboy words…

N8 with android is impossible due to nokia ,for now, doesn’t want this os in its smart…but, in the near future thanks to the arm architetture an android porting could be done …like droid for n900… But generally portings are crappy u must buy the original one so if u want symbian go for nokia else if u want android go fo a htc device

anyway about this post..i don’t like to connect to my smartphone stuffS like keyboard/mouse if you want a good S3 with much better built in qwerty must wait for nokia E7…

Someone i read above wants to connect a play3 controller to N8 via bt it could be possible but software needs…in the old symbian 3rd but 5th too wiimote can be connect thanks a sw installed in the smart! So nothing is impossible but we need developers………

        ThatS all

What that guy said was fanboism. I just said the truth and we all know that Symbian is VERY powerful. Android is good but not as good as Symbian. It might look pretty but its not my concern. I care more about functionality which Symbian offers me VERY well.
Symbian is VERY power efficient. Unlike Android, which needs a 1GHz CPU to perform properly. And if he likes Android, then he should go to an android fansite and comment there instead of trolling on a Nokia fansite.
          Peace

          • N#O#R#U#L#E#S says:

i’m not for android , not for apple, not for nokia(even if favorite brand), not for anyone ok??? i just comment with intelligent wherever i want without your permission!lol!because i’m not a BLIND fanboy LIKE U!!!!

        • Keith says:

I’m not even close to a fanboy. Go to engadget to meet fanboys. I just say the truth and what I said in the previous comment was all based on truth and NOT out of any fanboism. I don’t mind getting an android or iPhone if they offer me what I need (which they don’t at this point in time) and Symbian is the only OS that offers me what I need which is why I like it. I Do get disappointed sometimes by Nokia (N97, N96 etc) so I dont think calling me a fanboy is justified.
And even I write what I feel is true. And I’m writing all this with quite some experience with Android phones and much experience with iPhone (my friend owns one)

Plus, DID I EVER CALL YOU A FANBOY? go read my comment properly! I was talking about the other guy!
I really don’t wanna start a fight over this buddy!

    • Will says:

Dude Please android its a lie i said it before and ill keep it none of the androids available on the market its close to what n8 offer just go away from these site to any of those droid loosers

      • sparkymat says:

The point is not about the merits or de-merits of Anroids, but about the sensibility of putting Android on N8. Nokia doesn’t need another OS, especially one that doesn’t fit its needs and strategies.

  6. rstyle says:

I dont care how old is this video… Ive seen the 1st keyboard and mouse video before this is NEW to me. Its nice to see that BT keyboard and mouse working properly.

and boyy this Might be the most responsive Nokia N8 video ive seen. i dont know if its just me or what. LOL!

Now lets just wait for that newly improve browser thats coming soon.

  7. Michael Hell says:

Thanks for picking up my Video.. although its the wrong one, seems like those idiots have uploaded it again and claimed it was theirs.

  8. Stylinred says:

yeah this is one of the main selling points of the N8, for me, after the Camera

  9. Adnan says:

    someone’s tweet.

“Maemo/MeeGo makes your phone a “Mobile Computer”. Android/WebOS/iOS make simply a “Smarthphone”. Quite a difference to me”

    Michael Hell :

i met some Nokia reps earlier this year and had a play with the device. plus we had a nice demo evening, powered by Nokia Austria

Would you consider it an adequate replacement for some of the high-end android devices such as the desire and/or nexus one?

    • Michael Hell says:

as usual for that question, i’d like to quote my friend James Whatley, when he said:

“Android is perfect to consume content. However, Nokia is perfect in creating such content”.

Look, Android certainly has its qualities. i love the sharing integrations, the web browser and all the things that make android what it is today. i own a HTC Desire myself and use it as my main device currently. I enjoy what its capable of and certainly having fun with it.

However, i have a lifelong history with Nokia, been using Symbian for ages, literally. I found so many things annoying when the 5800 came out. With Symbian^3 all those things are gone. the speed and also the battery life have immensely improved. Given the fact that i’m a hobby photographer as well, the N8 is just what i was waiting for – a worthy successor to my beloved N82.
