MeeGo devices this year? Intel says no.

| October 5, 2010 | Comments (39)

Well in news that’s sure to bum out a number of us both here and elsewhere in the blogosphere, it would seem that we won’t be seeing any actual MeeGo devices (in our own hands at least) before the first half of 2011.

Doug Fisher, Vice President of Intel’s Software and Solutions Group and General Manager of Intel’s Systems Software Division stated quite clearly in a recent interview that while pleased with the progress MeeGo is making and the consistent meeting of deadlines, consumers would have to wait until next year to see and purchase them.  Bummer! :(

As part of that interview, he also intimated that another handset maker was in talks concerning adopting MeeGo for their future devices. He conveniently neglected to mention the name of this manufacturer of course.

Who do you think the mystery manufacturer is?  Sound off below.

Thanks Rich!

Google will rejoice at seeing how lame Nokia/Intel are. Last year it was the N900 with one delay after the other, this time it’s Meego. How long a way did they have to go from Maemo5? Do they really need like 18 months from the N900 to the next device? Again, Google and Apple will open a bottle of champagne.

    • Andre says:

The n900 was never meant to be a commercial success, yet it was.

Please stop trolling. If you want to add honest, productive discussion on the matter I have no problem with you. But please stop trying to rile up and annoy both the readers and authors. Thanks

      • Georg says:

I did not say that the N900 was a failure- it was, is a very good phone and that’s exactly why I am so disappointed that they still haven’t got Meego ready as they could build on an already good Maemo5. If this dissatifaction is trolling in your eyes you may be too thin skinned.
In the meantime many people will chose to not wait again and go for Android or IOS.
Sorry if I couldn’t write anything more upbeat in response to this news :-(

        • Andre says:

There’s no need to be upbeat but I don’t know of any delays surrounding the N900 being shipped. In fact it was one of the fastest devices shipped after announcement by Nokia in God knows how many years.
My comment on trolling was because I felt there was no basis for your comments re: delays and google and apple popping champagne. That is all.

    no n9 then> noooooooooooooooooooooooo

  3. Rant says:

That other manufacturer, would it be a big player then my money is on HTC. MeeGo allows for unlimited customizing which they will be losing with WP7 already and with (rumored) upcoming releases of Android (3.0)

    • Gransport65 says:

What about Aava and LG? Wasn’t LG already planning a Meego phone? Aava is supposed to be an open mobile device and run Android or Meego/Moblin.

      • Jim says:

aava is limited edition only for developers and it’s based on intel atom cpu. it will probably cost around 1000$. it’s not for public use.
LG was about to build an device with moblin, based on intel atom but then nokia merged with intel and created meego.

There is also a problem going with an OS. even if there are 4-5 manufactures that make android phones people usually ask what is the best android phone. so fat there are 2 winers: HTC and samsung. HTC because they work close with google so they are the first who make updates to the OS, and samsung because they are building they own CPU so they have most powerful device . SE and motorola are not seen so much. motorola sold a lot in US because they were marketed by verizon, and SE in europe based on their name. Iphone is special because a certain part of people like ios , BB is special for the same reason.
now the battle is for win phone 7 and LG is trying hard to be the best windows phone, so when people will ask I wanna buy a windows phone what do you recommend me? the answer will be LG. Not sure if this will happen since they have some competition.

For meego is simple. I don’t think any makor phone will jump on meego because of nokia. if people will ask what is the best meego phone , sure it will be nokia since they develop it :) , same thing goes for symbian.
It’s not a bad thing . it’s actually quite a good thing . I hope that no other player will make a meego phone. this way we can avoid fragmentation and developing apps will be much easy.

if you ask me there will be some minor companies that will make meego phones( asus and acer) and probably some dell mini tablets. but this devices will be more niche devices.

  4. Diablo says:

Number 1: I don’t think anyone was expecting a Meego phone to go on sale before the end of the year. Number 2: Some clarity is needed on whether or not we will SEE (not buy) any hardware running Meego this year (Nokia has said they WOULD, WOULD, WOULD release a type of pre production prototype based on Meego before year end). Number 3: Who else will run Meego? L.G will do anything to get their sales up. I doubt Motorola would touch Meego. HTC seems unlikely. Samsung is a probability. Sony Ericsson seems like a good candidate. My top choice would be Sony Ericsson. Number 4: Why is Meego taking so long to surface!!! It’s been like 8 months and no hardware!!!

  5. webby says:

I wonder if this only applies to MeeGo 1.1 or if Maemo6/Harmattan is included too.

    • Jason says:

He said that no actual MeeGo device within this year. N9 is not real MeeGo so expect N9 announcement still within this year.

  6. style says:

im looking forward to see some kind o prototype (announced by nokia not leak pic.) by year end. and release end of Q1 which is march. in store by mid-april.

i dont think i can wait till half of 2011.

  7. Jim says:

well what did I told you on one of my previous posts. no meego phone in 2010. and it will be stupid to release one now for the following reasons.
    1. nokia just lunched N8 and c6,c7 and e7 will be released in the following months. releasing a meego device will never work for the e7 because they somehow compete
    2. meego will be ready at the end of the month. but that’s vanilla meego. they need to work on adding drivers( Cpu,Gpu,BT,wifi, etc…) + their own software (ovi maps, ovi store.. etc).
    3. meego phone will have dual core arm cortex A9 so they will be available starting from 2011.( january and february are the worst months to lunch a product) so probably by the end of march nokia will release a product and will be in stores by the middle of april.

some people say that this year will be released a maemo6 -harmattan device branded as meego-harmattan and it will be based on debian, not on fedora like real meego.
However this will make difficult to update to future versions of meego that will be available such as meego 1.2(end of april 2011).

We shall see how things are working. meego conference is in the middle of november. by then we shall see some preview of the meego OS and probably a preview of the meego handset.

In conclusion I’m not hurrying to buy a phone now , because I want my next phone to have dual core arm-A9 and 1Gb ram, so I will wait until march-april. By then android 3 handsets will appear, probably we will see some meego/android tablets, and we can make a clear picture if meego can succeed or not. I think it can, all they need is for them to release a bug-free, fast , eye-candy OS. :)

    • Rant says:

I’m getting an N8. If a MeeGo device launches in March I’ll pick that up in late June or something. Perfect scenario. :D

    • Jim says:

pure speculations. cheap and dirty same as tabloids. :) ) only this is tech-tabloids.

      • Rant says:

They do say something about a stop-gap measure of MeeGo isn’t RTM.
Does make sense, not saying that they will do it, but it would bring in some revenue.

And: If Elop where to discuss with Schmidt, wouldn’t it be a great opportunity to gain some knowledge about upcoming Android releases? (just imagining what could happen :P )

But then again, making a new device takes somewhat between 12 to 24 months. Considering Android probably won’t run on any current Nokia hardware sans the N900 it wouldn’t be much of a stop gap. Thus making this yet again, another rumor.

        • Jim says:

so what?? now they have connections with CIA or KGB to know who’s calling who? how do they know that elop spoke on the phone with Schmidt? and if they did how did they know they were talking about android. they could talk about some hot chicks they saw in the park :) ) I really hope that nokia stays with meego. is a different approach, desktop OS with phone feature. android, win phone and the rest are phones with the possibility to install 3rd party apps. we shall see

    • Andre says:

I’d go as far as to say that this is unfounded, off-base, unlikely, ridiculous, tabloid junk.

Unless Nokia has had Android devices in the closet for the past 8 months at least, we’re not going to see any Android device out of Espoo.

That’s not taking into account the hundreds of executives that have stated time and again that Symbian and MeeGo are their smartphone platforms both now and in the foreseeable future.

Probably not the best idea to take anything at that site seriously.

  8. Viipottaja says:

Also, Nokia’s first Meego device is unlikely to be “pure” Meego and instead a cross-breed between their Harmattan/Maemo6 and Meego elements. So, at least in theory, Nokia might still at least announce N9 this year.

  9. styles says:

Mid 2011 is going to be a battle royale !

    Meego with dual-core…
Ginger bread with dual-core (sure the will have)
    Iphone 5 ? dual-core with bigger screen ?

    • Jay Montano says:

don’t forget the cochlea microphones and dermal touch screens plus a host of features from the N95 which will again be called revolutionary.

Mid 2011 Nokia phones should match on software/hardware and hopefully almost there with the Ovi Ecosystem.

  10. Stylinred says:

I’d say Sony Ericsson but most likely it’ll be one of those smaller companies / less known worldwide (a China mobility company like Oppo)

  11. alex68 says:

I assure you all here that there will be N9/Meego by the end of this year. But whether you are satisfied or not will depends on what you want from it, in terms of chips and OS version…

    • Keith says:

How can you say so? MeeGo conference itself is taking place in nov or december. MeeGo is nothing close to finished right now. Plus, Nokia takes several weeks to release its phones after the announcement. I believe it will be released after Q2 of 2011.

  12. alex68 says:

The mystery manufacturer might be Samsung, >70%.

    • alex68 says:

MOT, SE are also possible, and MOT > SE.

    • Stylinred says:

i thought samsung might, but they seem pretty committed to android now dont they?

      • alex68 says:

You have to watch Samsung more closely, and if you know the Korean culture, you will find the clue more easily.

        • Rant says:

They’ll jump from platform to platform as long as it’s profitable. They aren’t the company to stay loyal to any OS, they’re just in it for the money.
          ‘Greed is Good!’ :P

          • zonk0r says:

yeah – i’m with you on samsung – SE I can’t see it happening this year, not with the rumoured PSP phone being released on android 3.0 at least – that seems like more of a commitment – I think possibly something from HTC as well, they are always jumping on any ship sailing past and churning out phone after phone

  13. carstun.com says:

n8 seems like the good phone from the pic point of view and other factor is hardware
