Maps Update (3.06) via Nokia Beta Labs

| December 3, 2010 | 17 Replies

The latest update from the people over at Nokia Beta Labs is a new version of Ovi Maps with some exciting new features including pinch to zoom like we had seen in one of those N8 demo’s before the phone came out, and improved maps. A full list is below and it’s some exciting stuff, don’t forget you don’t pay a penny for all this so enjoy.

Note: This is still in beta so don’t expect it to be perfect, it may have a couple of bugs, but if you find one, help the people over at beta labs and let them know so they can be resolved!

Thanks for the heads up! Ovi Maps is full of features and I bought a Nuron just for Ovi Maps. I got the free car holder and getting the phone for free and using it as a Nav device without a sim card is fantastic. Too bad they left the non touch devices in the cold…our 2 E73s could use a few updates…let alone my N900

    • llaadd says:

know what you mean with the N900, I know it will be a while, but now Nokia have enabled dual-booting on the N900 via PR1.3, hopefully when MeeGo is done, it will have NAV and will work on the N900!

    • Jed says:

yeah this blows, n900 sorely needs a massive boost in maps capabilities :(

Maps 3.06 reboots my N8 every time I tried to download maps directly to the phone and occasionally in various other places of the app.

    • llaadd says:

have your restarted your phone since installing 3.06, if that doesn’t fix it, please head over to the beta labs page and report the but so they can find a fix.

      • James says:

Factory Restore (without deleting data) last night seems to have corrected the rebooting problem within Maps 3.06. I was able to install a new map directly to the N8 via wifi successfully just now where it had rebooted the N8 every single time.

However, I just realized last night before Factory Restore that the Conversation display mode for SMS is not displaying any conversation bubble at all and I can’t add new message from the Conversation display mode since installing Maps 3.06 but I’m not sure if it already had the problem a few hours before the Maps 3.06 installation. The Factory Restore didn’t fix it. Might have to do a Delete and Restore after all.

        • llaadd says:

very strange…I haven’t seen any of these sorts of issues. but as long as you reported it, hopefully they can figure out if it’s more widespread or just isolated

          • James says:

Yeah, reported in the Beta Lab Forum as well as via direct email. Several people have reported the rebooting issue with Maps 3.06 in the forum.

The system just isn’t that stable. It’s fine most of the time until a few new apps are installed then the N8 would either need a few reboots or Restore to iron out one problem or another. Missing screensaver is the most common with my N8.

I am waiting to get into my office where my PC is with Ovi Suite so I can be sure I can bring everything back online after a Delete and Restore as I only have an iMac at home. So frustrating.

  4. llaadd says:

@James incase you didn’t know, you can also backup on the phone it’s self, in file manager, choose “Backup”, “Options” then “Backup Now”. But always do a PC backup as well!

  5. James says:

Delete and Restore fixed the missing conversation bubbles in Conversation SMS display mode. Maps 3.06 rebooting problem that was fixed before not does nothing when I press the Upload button with Maps 3.06. Oh well, can’t win ‘em all. Perhaps I should just wait for the Gold version of Maps 3.06 unless I can’t download the Maps from Ovi Suite. Will give it a try now.
