Site changes in the new year.

| December 28, 2010 | 20 Replies

The new year is fast approaching and with the monumental growth this website has seen in the past 12 months, in no small part due to Jay’s very hard work , plans have been made to overhaul and improve the site so as to better the experience for our readers. Just to give an idea of the growth that this blog has experienced in the past year refer to the following:

  • 4.44 Million page-views since the inception of this blog in September of 2007 with 3.62 Million page-views in 2010 alone!
  • Current pageviews at 505,000 for the month of December at an average of 18,000 a day

  • The following graph is a trend of blog growth for the period June 2008- December 2010, pretty crazy huh! :)

We enjoy doing this for you guys and we aim to make the entire experience a better, more informative and fun one. As such we’re considering a voluntary survey for our readers where you guys can leave your input on how we can make the experience better for you all.

If any of you wish to maintain more up-to-date contact and/or share tips, opinions or pitch ideas with us you can do so via my twitter or Jay’s.

From Jay and the rest of the Mynokiablog crew, thanks for the support, hope you guys have a wonderful new year.

    A few pointers perhaps:

    - Do a little bit more with reviewing units. You have a reputation now so obtainign some units for reviewing should be possible.
    - Have people send in their own writing albeit well constructed and unbiased, and add the voice of the people
    - In general try to get some more content that is very usefull: Articles about apps usefull for business users, multimedia users etc (catch my drift?)

Not saying you’re doing a bad job, on the contrary loving it here. If I have more ideas I’ll post em.

Thanks for the almost always interesting articles you all put up! :)

As long as the facts are presented and you allow your readers to use their own brain and come to their own conclusion (right or wrong) you will have readers, good readers. Not the kind that just flock to other sites and don’t really participate or read even. Those kinda of readers are useless unless all you care about are page hits…

You guys are doing great! Love to see this blog grow so fast!

A few suggestions since you asked:

*Improved Search. I know this is probably a WordPress issue but if you can do something to get around it, that’d be great.

*Phone reviews. Like Rant mentioned, you guys have a big reputation so should be easy to get review units :)

*Creating discussion. You guys do this well but I think if you could make posts on different topics, albeit interesting topics, that would get people into discussions and we can see different point of views of the readers of this blog.

*Hire a couple people. I see that You and Jay have been posting most of the posts on this blog lately. It must be hard being students and blogging at the same time. So IF you can, hire a couple people for this blog that can spare time like you guys to make posts on this blog. This way, you have less load and the readers can also get to see different opinions/ideas/rants of the bloggers on this blog.

I guess that’s about it. You guys are REALLY doing great. I’d definitely put your blog right up with AAS, ZOMGitsCj and such blogs…..WAYYYY better than blogs like Engadget or Gizmodo or TechCrunch…….. :)

Different topics as in regarding other OS’s/companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google and such. Like something that may be Nokia needs to learn from them or vice versa.

      • Andre says:

Thanks a ton keith, thanks for the add on twitter as well ;)

This is my last and easiest semester in undergrad so I’ll have TONS of time over the next 5 months. We’ll see what happens after that :)

    • Rant says:

LOL, just wanted to post that you should get a few more active writers than cn jump fast at rumors and other news. In other words, I second that idea.

First of all, thanks for such a great blog!

I agree with the above suggestions really.

More reviews! With an easier way of getting to them as well as other news regarding that phone. Which leads into the next suggestion…

Better search! It’s a real pain to find what I want.

Better photo viewer. So we don’t have to leave the page to view the full pic etc.

    An updated comment system?

Maybe prettify the site. No offence, but it’s kind of plain looking…

Thanks again, and keep up the great work guys!

Love this blog! Also love the simple layout, very easy to read and find what’s interesting and important.

Only things I would improve is the photo viewing on the page, smoother viewing of big pictures or a gallery of many pictures. And it would also be nice if I could just click on the news picture to read more.

Thanks for the kind comments guys! Your participation is much of the reason this blog has grown so much, not just viewing/poll voting (need to update last poll post) but commenting, tip sharing, sharing these posts on social network and your own blogs. Stats show that our visitors are mostly made of of returning readers, not passers by which is really nice to know that there’s something worth clicking back to :D

The changes with the blog should be soon i.e. new year though might not have been the best time to move given the support folks at hosting/themes/wp are on holiday! Did mean to do it last week but had awful computer problems. Ha, will have to do it soon as I have to switch some attention over to the main exams in Jan.

Thanks for the great suggestions – it’s very helpful to know what our readers want to read, keeping the simple theme but pretty it up. We’ll look closely into getting more writers too. If there are any volunteers, mail up if you’re interested in joining the writing team.

Comment system – I think we will move to disqus? Everyone seems to be on that platform.
Search improvement – not sure how we can do this. We could add a google search as that’s how I look for posts to trackback to as the wordpress search is awful
More (handset) Reviews: Yup! We’ll definitely get on with this.

There’s a lot of great ideas up here and I’ll see what I can do to integrate as much of them as I can (within what I can technically do of course :p).

    Cheers

    • Rant says:

Regarding handset reviews; if you could, make them really consistent. Every review adresses the same points and a wildcard, for example the camera on the N8 or something.
And the scorecards a la Engadget are quite nice actually.

Of course, don’t forget to do some reviews on extra’s such as good earphones or something. And a top ten app list that gets updated each month or so.
      Just ideas. :P

      • Jay Montano says:

Hey those are some great ideas!

Darn wordpress doesn’t update me on comment replies. boo.

We’ll try and sort out a review format that will be consistent amongst the writers.

App list sounds great too! hope there are enough interesting apps to keep the list moving. I don’t want to have just gravity on there all the time :p
