Research chief Henry Tirri appointed as the new Nokia CTO

| September 22, 2011 | 25 Replies

It’s been quite a while since the previous CTO of Nokia, Rich Green left the company. According to various rumors, he was at the forefront of the Meego movement in the company. We all know that the strategy had changed a LOT after feb. 11 and obviously he left due to conflict on interest. Apparently, he went on a long leave and it seems to have ended now that the new CTO has been selected.

He is none other than the Nokia Research chief Henry Tirri. He has been appointed as the new Chief Technology officer at Nokia, also designated as one of the Executive Vice Presidents there.

What’s interesting to note is, he will be based out of Sunnyvale, California which is the heart of Silicon Valley, U.S. We already know that the Nokia U.S HQ is based from Sunnyvale, CA.

I am sure Tirri would be a good match since you know, he has been the research chief of the biggest spender in R&D. Who knows what tricks he might have, in his sleeves.

Update : Interesting to note that Tirri was acting as the interim CTO since Green went on leave, check out this interview .

Espoo, Finland – Nokia announced today that Henry Tirri has been appointed executive vice president, Chief Technology Officer and a member of the Nokia Leadership Team, effective September 22, 2011. He reports directly to President and CEO Stephen Elop.

As Chief Technology Officer, Tirri assumes responsibility for the CTO organization, charged with setting Nokia’s technology agenda both now and in the future, and driving core innovation to enable business development opportunities.

Previously, Tirri was Head of Nokia Research Centre (NRC), Nokia’s forward looking research facility. He joined Nokia in 2004 as a Research Fellow before leading NRC Systems Research laboratory in 2007. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Helsinki, Finland. Tirri will be based in Sunnyvale, California.

Richard Green, who was appointed Chief Technology Officer in May 2010, and was a member of the Nokia Leadership Team since February 11, 2011, has elected to depart Nokia. Effective September 22, 2011, he is no longer a member of the Nokia Leadership Team. Green will be returning full time to the U.S. to pursue new opportunities.

“During his time at Nokia, Henry has provided Nokia technical leadership and challenged us to explore forward-looking technologies. In his new role, Henry will have the opportunity to make a greater impact and set the course for Nokia and our role in the mobile industry,” said Nokia President and CEO Stephen Elop. “The company would also like to thank Rich Green for the key role he played in assisting Nokia through a major transition. We wish him all the best success in his future ventures.”

surprised, why not the one from micr$oft

  4. TurboDragon says:

Too bad, I really liked Green. I have the feeling that the N9 will be my last Nokia.

  5. mice says:

I believe that the next thing they will replace is elop.Sometime in early next year…
    And i realy hope so!

  6. blackidea says:

Hope he’s not other meego hater or directed by elop to push the wp.
The N9 is here and nokia should push it to their user

    • Johnson says:

Forget about Meego, man. It’s not about the OS it’s about the UI = Qt.

      Qt is the new black.

      • Svenkka says:

        +1

This is something people overlook far too often. Nokia is fully committed to Qt, and it makes OS running underneath pretty close to irrelevant.

In theory, any app running in Symbian can be re-compiled to run in N9, given all the necessary APIs are available. What if Qt run in S40…

      • Blackidea says:

        Yeah.
But to run Qt on mobile, you need an OS right.
And we know that MeeGo is going to be Qt optimized OS.
Running Qt on other OS is not the same way if you running it on MeeGo.
        Look symbian belle.
The Qt component is not yet ready for native apps.
Only on satus bar, tab bar, toolbar, and notification.
On N9 all of the UI is using Qt components.
        Ready to use.
        Symbian? Not yet ready.
        S40? Not yet ready.
        WP? Suck

      • Shmerl says:

No way so far. There is no Qt on WP.

  7. Nagol says:

Well I really hope they get rid of Elop. He is the worst CEO to ever takeover Nokia. I don’t have a problem with WP7 platform and wouldn’t mind Nokia using it. But I do have a problem with Elop being more concerned about the Microsoft company besides the Nokia company itself. We can offer so much more with Symbian, Meego, and WP7 all at once. He is also incompetent and should not be CEO. They need to get somebody from Finland that actually cares about their brand and products. Elop does not and is just a Microsoft tool.

  8. Ekeluo says:

All you (we) Elop non-admirers (euphemism) can look at it this way: a dirty deed(s) needed to be done at nokia, after which someone had (has?) to take the fall. You don’t want someone you know or like to do that. Answer? Bring in an outsider. (May qualify as giving a dog a bad name an hanging it though). Bear with him for now. He’ll be gone in due time.

  9. Shmerl says:

Rich Green was the right man for this. But right people don’t go along with MS. He left Oracle, after it bought Sun. So he left again after Nokia sold their future to MS.

  10. Sugotech says:

i hope Terri will be prove his best ability as a CTO and he has alot of knowledge because he has a wide rang of research on new technology.
