Video: N9 Review – NFC

Something that we haven’t seen demoed outside of Nokia launch events, is the NFC capabilities between two phones. There are a few videos showing it working with the Play 360 speakers, but not too many with two phones.

I managed to get a loan N9 from Nokia, and have recorded a little NFC demo. (Sorry about the small screen, phone wouldn’t sit right horizontally so I put it vertical.)

The way in which it unlocks Angry Birds levels is really good. I wish it worked the same for sharing files. File sharing is still quite quick, but most likely as it needs to make use of Bluetooth to transfer the data, it takes a little bit longer. Selecting the option to “Confirm Sharing and Connecting” does take longer again, as it requires you to accept the file transfer.

A cool feature is the ability to send and receive simultaneously. Hopefully we will see more applications of NFC in the future, such as “Tap to Pay” and also the ability to use your phone to store RF-ID data (eg. Tap to open door to apartment block). There is already an NFC app called NFC Corkboard over at Nokia Developer if you wish to try it out.

As I mention in the video, there is a community-developed app Forever Alone for those that have the N950 or “no friends”.
