Nokia Lumia 800 Hands-On (ALREADY!!!) + Video

| October 26, 2011 | 34 Replies

ThisIsMyNext/The Verge have a hands-on of the Nokia Lumia 800 direct from the Nokia World floor.

They say the phone as the same feel as the N9 (which is expected seeing as it’s practically the same body design). They also comment on the “exclusive” ESPN app that will come with the Nokia WP. Read the full post here. They say they will be uploading a video too :)

UPDATE: Hands-On video from Nokia Conversations has been uploaded on youtube. Check it out

Also, The Verge’s video is now uploaded

    That’s it :-)

  2. goosepig says:

No FM transmitters in these new Nokia Windows phones I take it?

There seem to be doubts that even the N9 has one – cannot find definite confirmation!

    • Michael Faro-Tusino says:

It (N9) does, I have used the reciever (FMRX) and seen the transmitter (FMTX) on developer specs

      • goosepig says:

Thanks – good to know. I’m still banking on getting the N9 here in the UK, even though the Windows phones don’t look too shabby.

Another gripe with WP (alongside no FM tranmitter) is the lack of a micro SD slot – this seems to be worrying new trend in Nokia phones…

      • Oh Hei says:

But can you use the FM Transmitter NOW? If the answer is no, then at this point, it really isn’t a feature since you can’t use it out of the box.

  3. BellGo says:

So disappointing. They added WP to a N9 with a better processor. Wow. What were they doing all year?

    So lets see what went wrong on Nokia World;

    1. Their WP is no different from other manufacturers.
    2. The WP phones will take months to arrive, and even then on limited availability.
    3. Nothing on MeeGo or Symbian.
    4. They still continue raping the N9.. (Compare the specs of Lumia and price to the N9)

    • jiipee says:

You can add to the list:
      5. Still no true flagship phone on sale except in five countries until Q1 2012
      6. WP not really supported by Nokia Ecosystem yet: eg. Nokia store (at least no mention yet and not tile for it), Qt, NFC speakers, NFC phone compatibility…
I guess we need to wait until H22012 when they truly have things in place.
The good thing could be that they might reduce the price for N9 since the price indicates it to be the flagship (price indicates value) instead of Lumia 800. Even if they dont directly compete in the same market.

    • Bloob says:

      1. Apart from navigation and the music app( looked handy though ), yes
      2. The phones are already shipping, but will take months to get to the US
      3. Did you really expect this on the keynote speech, or even day 1?
      4. Compare the development / support costs for Harmattan / WP7. =)

All in all, it was all very expected, and good enough. But nothing outstanding, except for the plans for advertising.

    • Viipottaja says:

Price of N9 is a function of its exclusivity and at least initially enthusiastic demand relative to supply, as well as its not being a part of the core strategy. WP phones are priced to drive the strategy. N9 price will likely drop towards the end of spring 2012.

Very basic business management stuff, really.

    • Oh Hei says:

Oh please! At least the N9 comes in White :)

    • Aleve Sicofante says:

Availability seems to be immediate. I’ll confirm that when it stops raining in my hometown and I can go window shopping to confirm that.

I’m in Spain and Nokia website here shows a list of stores in the country where to get the phone right now.

    • Jesse says:

Microsoft has special deals with Qualcomm so the phones will be cheaper, also no NFC, FFC, pentaband etc take cost down a little too.

N9 has a lot of extra hardware things in it.

  4. Daniel McGuire says:

So no symbian news at all from this event? :(

  5. larryg968 says:

I finally realized what nokia should have done. They should have partnered with amazon. Most of the ecosystem crap ELop talk about, Amazon has them: Ebooks, movies, music and all the other stuff.

Plus, people like Amazon. As Google CEO noted, only 3 companies have the brand cache to pull the consumers, Google, Apple and Amazon.

    Microsoft isnt one of them.

And yes, although its the same phone, the N9 looks better. Tile r ugly. Metro looks nice though

    • jonnyjl says:

Exactly, they should have partnered with Amazon to bring the Cloud Services and break into the US Market.

The N9 is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous and pleasure to use.

I would bet money Google wouldn’t mind them integrating services (even more than it is on the N9) into their phone too, especially if it was on Open Platforms of Meego (just change back to Maemo already) and Qt

If anyone was reserving judgement until the Windows Phones came out. Come on, can you seriously with a straight face say these two phones are great?

      So sad.

    • Mario says:

Be aware that most of Amazon’s services are US only…

  6. ssdh says:

OMG! It’s the N9′s evil twin (with more buttons)…

  7. stylinred says:

    no Front facing camera?

it looks nice i have to say the UI actually fits in well with the N9 design but still not interested

    • Jesse says:

Yeah, no FFC is kind of strange.. I don’t use video calling barely ever but as a developer I like to use it in apps. I am dissapointed by that. UI looks nice and so FAST!

  8. daniel cheong says:

it doesnt delight me..after so long they planned it …it just piece of xxxx, with no different with ordinary wp phone that already on the market…microsoft doesnt belongs to phone market…meego are much more potential and competitive.

  9. eka says:

hahaha android fanboys crying all over the web, pretending as nokia ood symbian/meego fan eh

  10. viperkid says:

nothin’ new. recycled design! NOT deserving to have my hard earned money. N9, pls take my money. ECOSYSTEM is an overrated thing! wp mango, not for me. buttersmooth UI? not my requirement. android ICS and symbian belle are better in more ways. more function out of d box and most importantly, both are way more customizable.

  11. Raja says:

This is my next buy for sure a sexy black lumia 800

  12. freedom says:

e;op yu just know how to barkkkk and over exaggerate and give a hype to the nokia fans but in real you dont have the balls to produce anything different and unique, accept for the drive navigations, music app and other small additions what is so appealing that i should go for a nokia windows phone but not the htc…….
and most of all the phones are priced so high as if they are the best piece of shit….

  13. Calvin H says:

So Nokia chose WP7 so they could differentiate? Looks like every other WP7 phone to me. Elop is a dick!

    • freedom says:

      indeed
      he is a headless dick

    • Jesse says:

Ummmm no, they chose Windows Phone so they could directly help build the platform. They don’t want to differentiate the OS just add to it.

They chose Windows Phone because it is faster than hell and will take over the industry within the next few years.

  14. Rock says:

    Boooriiing.

N9 > Probably every other Nokia phone.

  15. ghj says:

The MeeGo version makes this look, well.. dated. This is just sad .. like I expected, Nokia can’t even touch the OS, so.. no chance against the Asian cartel. Forget about it..

  16. Jesse says:

Dang, Windows Phone is so fast.. It was always fast but on that new hardware just those split miliseconds make it even quicker. So excited to upgrade but sadly I am in the US : (
