Video: Dynamic, Live Anna Icons in the works?
What we have here is a possibility that the app icons on the Nokia N9 may have the capability of being dynamic, similar to the live tiles on its windows phone twin- the Lumia 800.
According to Meego Forum member thp, there is a small script available which (when running in the background) will make sure that the icon of the calendar app will always show the current day-of-month. He finds this calendar hack rather trivial, but, to me, it certainly opens a door to a myriad of possibilities that can revolutionise the current static app icons that we have on the Symbian and MeeGo line. Perhaps, “revolutionise” is a bit of an exaggeration but based on the numerous reviews on the Lumia 800, many people prefer the dynamic live tiles to the static grid icons found on the iPhone and Android toys. This could be a winner for Symbian and MeeGo!
Watch the video to witness the live calendar icon in action.

Hopefully, Nokia or the MeeGo community implements this throughout the interface and bring those beautiful squircles to life.

What is dynamic in this video I don’t understand?
haha watch the video again, and this time take note of the number on the calender icon. I hope you get it this time.
i cant make out anything….
Poor eyesight? The days iterate.
Essentially it works like a calendar widget.
But also quite diff. to a calendar widget in how it actually works.
you can’t be serious! This is awesome! One thing i would like is… If the Facebook app icon could dynamically show How many notifications… And Thats just the beginning! Ther could also be for unread msg’s etc…
Our biggest concern in the N9 community is whatsapp and getting through aegis, the idea of facebook notifications or messages isn’t needed just yet.
it is only useful for calender icon? isnt it? it is battery -unfriendly!
It’s not really battery unfriendly, cause if it’s falling asleep after setting the date, it takes nearly nothing!
It only changes the date once every day to indicate the current day, it’s really small and doesn’t have an impact over battery.
M$ will be in real danger if Nokia supports MeeGo just like its doing for WP7
the people in maemo community can contribute to n9 without being paid, because they like n9
i am sure some people in nokia like n9 and use it as their personal phone. hope they can continuously support n9 just like what the people in maemo.org do
I have been using the Nokia N9 as my personal phone since I received it in October, it is by far the best phone I have used to date, the only thing lacking is the Camera, if it was a bit better I would be satisfied, but otherwise the phone works flawlessly and everyone that sees me using it asks me what it is and can they play with it, I have people dying to ditch their iOS phone for this one.
use the white balance settings. that improves the picture quality a lot.
I am aware… the camera still leaves a lot to be desired coming from the N8.
well thats clear. the n8 has an extra large sensor.
Also an extra quality optics, extra optimized software, xenon flash; the whole package is just miles ahead of the N9 in the camera department.
Hasn’t the iOS calendar icon always been like this?
Also the app store icon has a number showing how many updates are, the mail icon shows how many new msgs, etc.
Yes, it does. The point here was that N9 or Symbian doesn’t have it. Would be welcome change, especially for N9.
i like to hear mods on nokia n9, it is the goodness of linux os
There are plenty of mods on the N9, I’ve been maintaining and organizing most on my personal blog for fun.
what blog?
http://www.everythingn9.com... Jay if I’m not allowed to post my own blog name here, it’s cool to delete it
not for symbos?
This is a fake, just an animation
You are right, it is just an animation to show it can work, but I have this hack installed and after working with Coderus and thp himself, we have this hack working perfectly… try it out for yourself.
Well it creates the icon on the fly (and caches it probably, doing it only once a day). It’s doable as there are only certain amount of days per month.
If that same principle is taken to other icons and arbitary data it would put a much bigger load on the phone. For facebook and other notifications the notification screen is already much better solution.
Look what we have here as an idea from ideasproject:

That’s the right way
Glad someone noticed my idea
This is a default function of the N9 calendar icon!
I got one and it shows alwas the right date in the icon on the homescreen without any hack with default firmware.
That’s news to me, the default number on the calender icon is 21 and remains that way till you use calenderr, but you may have one of the rare ones
I don’t get what’s the point of these live icons.
I check the calendar either on the top of Events screen or the lockscreen, so I don’t see any point of calendar (or clock) icon having dynamic properties.
What other dynamic icons there could be?
Same here. Isn’t that what widgets are for? But instead they show more information and are actually useful
with all due respect… im also on that whatsapp road! as i use it alot… but why focus all our resources on one thing that might not even happen? while we could spread out and enhance this beautifull device in all aspects at the sametime? also some people might use facebook more nd would like to see it at 1st glance…
That’s great. That’s a powerful feature that Apple will try to do in iPhone 5 and say that it was their idea, I’m sure. =D
OT: I hope there will be WhatsApp with the community’s effort. That’s the only app I need. I can live without the rest.
iOS already has these.
pr1.2 will have day number in calender icon. I just hope nokia will make consumer pc updater for n9 that can make clean flash. too much issues with updates so far.
