How To: Get Msn on the N9
Something many N9 users have wanted, is MSN on their device. Well now they can! There are other tutorials out already that are quite long and involve extensive terminal work. This is by far the simplest.
For starters download the MSN_N9 zip file to your pc. Connect the N9 in mass storage mode. Extract the files of the .zip into a newly created folder called “msn”. Eject the device once successfully unzipped.
On the device, ensure Developer Mode is enabled. (Settings > Security > Developer Mode).
- Open Terminal
- Gain root access using devel-su with password as rootme unless you have changed this
- cd /home/user/MyDocs/msn
- dpkg -i harmattan-repository_*.deb
- apt-get update
- apt-get install python-gobject python-openssl python-gst0.10 python-farsight python-crypto python-dbus
- dpkg -i python-papyon_*.deb
- dpkg -i python-telepathy_*.deb
- dpkg -i telepathy-butterfly_*.deb
- mc-tool add butterfly/msn MSN string:account=(email address) string:password=(account password)
(It will then list the account uid. This will look something like ‘butterfly/msn/myemail_40hotmail_2ecom0′ which you need to put into) - mc-tool enable <account>
You should now have msn in your availability list. It will be blank and have no display image, nor does it say MSN, but it works. Contacts will also be imported, but will not be listed as a “service”. You can view your msn messages, in messaging, using the filter toggle up the top. Cheers to billranton from Maemo Talk for this great way to access MSN

Wow. More power to N9.
WhatsApp. Make it happen. =D
It won’t, just get Ebuddy XMS when it comes out. Been promised it’ll be done by the end of the month
yes but that would require that everyone you know switch to Ebuddy as well which is not gonna happen.
isn’t the point of eBuddy XMS to allow cross platform sms/IM, someone can be on MSN on a desktop and chat with you who is on eBuddy…
I could have that wrong though. If it is as you say though, then WhatsApp would have failed
Hi Michael,
Just got my Nokia n9 in uk, currently taking things slowly. Now this is a great addition but is there an option to add yahoo as well. Please let us know, or a easy way to add Jabber so it links to yahoo and MSN.
Thanks

Hi,
i had copy the “msn” folder into every folders in my N9… trying the terminal find it…
it does’nt look it… what is the secret?
i’d created the folders inculded in the pathway described…
please help me
looks too complicated for me and other normal n9 users, why there is not app that has msn? ebuddy xms for n9 has it? do we need to give away our passward to ebuddy?
Definately not a walk in the park. Had some issues here and there. After much meddling, MSN is now integrated well into my N9. Somehow that bug with the LED light not working during charging is back though. Not sure if its linked to the enabling of the develop-mode.
Can I suggest adding this link: “http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=80501″ as well to polish up the feature?
I’ve never had a problem with the LED and i’ve had dev mode on since day one
Michael, Off-topic: Have you seen the OTA update for the Australian N9′s? Or heard anything when it might be released. Thanks
I flashed mine, so I won’t receive the notification, but my contacts at Vodafone AU and Nokia AU have said they should be here in dec, so give it a few more weeks and hope for the best.
Some people have been able to update their Aus N9 using NSU, have you tried that?
Hey,
sorry, but i dont understand this part:
“mc-tool add butterfly/msn MSN string:account=string:password=
(It will then list the account uid. This will look something like ‘butterfly/msn/myemail_40hotmail_2ecom0′ which you need to put into)”
Is it right to make it like this:
mc-tool add butterfly/msn MSN string:account=MyMSNAdress:password=MyMSNAccountPassword
??
I get an error:
mc-tool: The supplied CM parameters were not valid
Where is the mistake?
Thanks!
No
mc-tool add butterfly/msn MSN string:account=smith69@hotmail.com string:password=1234567
then:
mc-tool enable butterfly/msn/(your account, it’s shown 1 line above [smith69_40msn_20eco0 something like that)
for example:
mc-too enable butterfly/msn/smith69_40msn_20eco0
Here you go
, but you need to enable it every reboot.. i think
Not true, once enabled, it works every time, just need to change availability to online. There is a way to use mc-tool to go online automatically as well
Does this use encrypted connections by default? If not, how to enable it? At home-WLAN it doesn’t really matter, but otherwise I never want to communicate over unencrypted lines.
Hi! Fix this:
“string:account=string:password=”
to this:
“string:account=YOURMAIL@kdkfs.com string:password=YOURPASSWORD”
There must be space between
oh cool, this helps. thank you
now it just have to connect…
btw: is there a known solution also fpr ICQ?
If you have Opera and you do not care and you only like to watch
. (skip 3-10 by copy + paste)
cd /home/user/MyDocs/msn/ && dpkg -i harmattan-repository_*.deb && apt-get update && apt-get install python-gobject python-openssl python-gst0.10 python-farsight python-crypto python-dbus -y && dpkg -i python-papyon_*.deb python-telepathy_*.deb telepathy-butterfly_*.deb
This should work…
God damned, 3-9!! 10 you have to make yourself
NO.. do not use this.. If you use, use it only 5-9
apt-get update && apt-get install python-gobject python-openssl python-gst0.10 python-farsight python-crypto python-dbus && dpkg -i python-papyon_*.deb python-telepathy_*.deb telepathy-butterfly_*.deb
To Michael, Thanks for the response. I have checked both on the application update in the settings menu and the NSU app on my computer. I have an unbranded N9 from Australia, purchased through Exspansys USA. Since both the USA and Australia were the last two to get the Anna update, patience will be paramount. Could you post a notification if you see updates being received there? I figure you must friends who also have N9s. Thanks
Vodafone AU just released PR 1.1 internally for testing, so release should be coming in a gew days. Also, PR 1.1 AU variants are back on Navifirm, so hopefully it should be soon.
I have a problem with this procedure make me error saying can not find the msn protocol, repeat the procedure 3 times and 3 under the same person I know I can do please?
In step 11 I have a problem appears: “should have 3 trailing components, not 1″
a solution?
More details:
mc-tool enable: Account path ‘/org/freedesktop/Telepathy/Account/(My email =D) is malformed: should have 3 trailing components, not 1
it should be mc-tool enable butterfly/msn/email
email will be something like myemail_40hotmail_2ecom0
hi,
i dont understand the meaning ‘open terminal’?
after extracting the zip file in n9, enabled the developer mode.
how do i open terminal? cant seem to find the extract msn file.
help?
How do I know that contacts will be imported? I tried it but I can’t communicate with friends as there is no such service.. Am I right to say that?
how do i remove when installed? Thanks
Hey, been working with this a while now, seems to be installed correctly, and worked fine with MSN.
Of late, though, for some reason MSN will connect and immediately lose connection, constantly attempting to log in. did some testing, and sure enough, I actually do sign in for under a second each time, automatically (My home MSN helpfully saying I’ve ‘signed in’ for half a second every so often!)
Any ideas what the cause of this could be? I’ve had a go at some software restarts and hard restarts to test for a glitch, but it seems to make little difference.
Try this version. http://mynokiablog.com/2011/12/11/improved-how-to-guide-installing-msn-icq-jabber-aol-and-yahoo-on-nokian9/
