Video: Nokia Rookie Award: Reputation in the making. (+ Competition to win Burton Snowboard Gear!)

Nokia often does a bunch of Burton related promos. I must say, I didn’t quite understand what the video was about when watching the first minute of it. I was instinctively trying to see where a Nokia phone might fit in to this. Well, you can kind of see that there’s a Nokia Lumia 800 pictured above. That’s part of a prize (along with $5000!) for the winners of the first ever Nokia Rookie Award for up and coming riders.

The award was given to a male and female rider who demonstrated an outstanding performance in the halfpipe competition at the event. The winners personified the spirit of the Burton US Open by pushing their own personal limits and achieving outstanding results at the highest competitive level; with the opportunity to compete against the snowboarding elite such as Shaun White and Kelly Clark!

The Awards Committee judged the award by looking at a rider’s TTR ranking and scores, progressive riding and how far the rider advanced through the competition. Only those riders that had not previously being awarded a podium finish at any of the 5 or 6 Star TTR World Snowboard Tour events were eligible.

This is, reputation in the making. Not just for these kids, but for Nokia too – being associated with excellence (the Nokia award!) and possibly helping to nurture excellence (money to put towards training/equipment).

I like the message at the end. Just have fun with what you’re doing. Don’t worry about getting sponsorships, just enjoy what you’re doing and all that will come.

We can all apply this in our own lives. If we’re lucky enough to have that option to pursue what it is that we love doing, then by all means do so. Don’t try to put yourself in a box based on other people’s expectations. More often than not, great things come when people are in their element, doing things they are most passionate about. We can see this in key members of Nokia, Like Marko Ahtisaari. You know you really want people who aren’t just good at their job, but love every minute of doing it to the point that it’s not a job for them at all. It’s just them, having fun with what they’re doing :).

There’s a post at Nokia Conversations where they have a little competition.

Plus, want to win an exclusive VIP Burton Snowboard US Open backpack, filled with Burton Snowboard gear? Simply answer:

“What are the names of the two riders awarded the first ever Nokia Rookie Award?”

Tweet @Nokia the two names of the winners using the #NokiaRookieAward hashtag for a chance to win

The names appear in the video and are also the file names of the pictures. It’s also present in the cheques :).

Thanks Matt for the tip and images.
