Quick demo of some intensive multitasking on the Nokia 603 with Belle FP1.
Sorry for the bad quality. This video shows a short demonstration of the multitasking capabilities of the Nokia 603 running on Belle FP1. Even with 57 open apps, the phone runs pretty smoothly, with only slight lags here and there. You may notice that the number of open apps goes from 57 to 56 at one point, this is because I accidentally pressed the red key and closed dungeon hunter 2 instead of putting it in the background.

Symbian wont be like this today, if the old managment had put a 1.4ghz proccessor and a 512mb ram on the N8 and its siblings… also a larger internal memory.. and battery, everyone else was doing it, why not nokia?

the n8 is able to multitask a lot of apps too i think it was in the 20s? which was/is impressive
It wasn’t immune to memory errors. Happens a lot in opera mobile for example

It was indeed better than before, but that was in comparison to their own devices. Also, Nokia I guess didn’t really compare their performance against others otherwise they would see those problems with S^3.
In the post above, that is what I wrote prior to owning the N8. It was great in the first couple of weeks but it would still gradually get that problem where the longer you use it, the more problematic it gets.
I got to the point where I wasn’t able to play my HD games anymore. Sometimes they wouldn’t start or I’d have to kill everything else in the background or it would just freeze and quit.
People should understand that it was not Elop that killed Nokia. It was the N97 destroying Symbian’s reputation. After the release of the N97 everything good about Symbian was gone and it was considered a pile of junk. Something that just doesn’t work.
Some people have fantacies about how the Symbian was considered viable platform after that fiasco but that’s just some false hopes. Symbian started a fast decline after the N97 was brought to the markets and that’s revenue-wise. Nokia was able to compete some time with lowering prices but that was a dead end.
Nokia’s market share started to decline before Elop even got his position. That was the end of the Symbian, N97. It was so bad that people still keep reminding about it and how bad it was.
Oh yeah. Elop’s Nokia’s savior by killing off the still and more profitable Symbian and MeeGo. He saved them all by premature death through summary execution. Why suffer a carriage with 4 wheels instead of 1? Let’s all do a balancing act with a unicycle, a small and hobbled Operating System that for 15 years under so many reiterations would not die but has killed off partners. Let’s be assimilated by the collective. And if that strategy doesn’t work, let’s just say that Nokia is beyond saving anyway, and that it’s not Elop’s fault but the fault of Symbian, OPK, Nokia fan boys and fan girls, etc.

Elop cost Nokia some hundreds of millions but the actual damage was done with the N97. It was really so bad that the ripple effect continues still to damage Symbian and Nokia. The N97 made Symbian lose all of it’s credibility and that was it. The end.
And yes, it’s not Elop’s fault still. Blame everything and everyone but Elop. It’s not as if he’s the CEO of Nokia at present or anything. As I’ve read somewhere (I think it was here in MNB), it’s a train wreck in slow motion. It’s slowly crashing, but still a train wreck.
Times like these you need more allies (Symbian, MeeGo, WP7.5) than enemies (Android, iOS, and much everyone else).
You gain enemies, not friends, by killing their favored platform.
That train wreck started with the release of the N97. After that it was just the same train wreck on repeat. Elop was just the guy who told everyone to jump off the train while it was heading really fast to it’s doom.
That’s pretty much about what happened.
Yeah, the N97 really did damage Symbian. Telling people to jump ship without a viable replacement was also kinda senseless. Who would buy these products if the current ceo believes that it is a burning platform? That’s one error that totally killed the belle range of devices.
I posted this video on the tips section so that Jay could show everyone how belle fp1 is such a huge leap from the N97. The ui has improved, and it has improved a lot. I think that’s why Nokia themselves are sticking with the belle branding.

Yeah, it was stupid to announce the end of the Symbian before preparing any real replacement for the platform. That may have cost Nokia possibly even 10-15 million units in lost sales up to the date. The rest of the decline was inevitable due to the Symbian’s trashed reputation after the N97.
It’s not yet perfectly clear how well the Windows Phone will perform but it was clear they had to do something to get a replacement. Symbian was already in a rapid downhill and MeeGo was an entirely new platform without any substantial support from the third parties. It would have been very hard to get it to succeed.
It’s true that Belle is a real improvement but that was just too late. It would have been an completely different matter if Nokia had Belle when N97 was released.

Rubbish, they had barely even started ramping that up before they gave up, so we’ll never know.
It’s like jumping from a plane 100mi up without a parachute. You may or may not survive the fall, depends on your density and body mass.

I have used Symbian. I have used Android. I have used Windows CE. Windows Mobile 6.5. Windows Phone 7.5. Apple iOS. UIQ 3.0. Palm OS. Newton OS. Blackberry OS.
There were lots of times I cursed S60V3FP1. Unwieldy beast, nested menus/submenus. It’s like a programmer’s OS, a novice can easily get lost. BUT… I have yet to experience a low memory message or a closed application or system hang from my Nokia N82. Even on my Nokia 6120 Classic.
Yes, I am guilty. I took Symbian for granted. Sometimes I wish that Symbian would be replaced by something else, something better. There was a time that I pitied the sad state of Symbian. I got to use UIQ, then Windows Mobile on O2/HTC devices. I was impressed. At that time, Symbian is just like an ancient dinosaur compared to the stylus driven resistive touch screens.
Then Apple iOS came. With capacitive touchscreens. Then Android came also, not too far behind. Capacitive touchscreens.
Nokia decided they don’t want any of the action but later relented and probably half-heartedly created the infamous Nokia N97. It was a penny pinching engineering feat, actually, and the CGI was a joke. Nothing near to the actual performance. So Nokia stumbled. Not the first time. But we thought they would wisen up. They never did.
Then came the other experiments, all were not totally failures, but were just that – experiments. Finally Symbian Belle arrived. It was an amalgamation of all that was good that they have collected and only a few of the bad (ARM11, nHD, to name a few) that remained. BUT it was not really revolutionary but evolutionary. And all of the efforts finally paid off. Was it too little, too late? Perhaps. But you CANNOT DENY the fact that Symbian Belle is a competitive OS. Even with its quirks and difficult programming curve.
Please respect Symbian Belle for what it is – a capable OS.

I am guilty for taking Symbian for granted.
When Nokia presented MeeGo, I had some reservations, since some of these features were missing from the original PR1.0.
I expect a $300+ USD up device to have at least most of these features. BUT for a FLAGSHIP DEVICE, I expect nothing less and everything in it, EVEN THE PROVERBIAL KITCHEN SINK. And don’t forget about the accessories.
That’s why, when Nokia announced they have abandoned Symbian and will adapt Windows Phone, I was like a crazed animal, anticipating the goodies that Microsoft may bring. I thought to myself, all of this can be good, with my experience with Windows CE, Windows Mobile.
HOW I WAS WRONG. Not only did Windows Phone not meet my expectations, they wanted to substitute Symbian and MeeGo with AN INFERIOR AND HOBBLED OPERATING SYSTEM.
Now I am all for technology and progress, but this is silly.
How can a crippled and hobbled OS be any good in replacing ANYTHING EVEN HALF DECENT?
If WP7.5 was all that it was cracked up to be, IMMEDIATELY replacing legacy Symbian with SOMETHING BETTER, then I’m all for it!
As such promises are oft unkept and expectations are oft unfulfilled.
Is this what we’ve waited for 15 years? THIS?!?!?!
We would have been better off with Symbian and MeeGo, together with Elop’s experiment called Lumia.
I’m sorry, Symbian, I let you down. I did not have enough faith with you way back then. I took your existence for granted.
I will remember always that I have been lucky to have seen you grow into a beautiful OS: Nokia Symbian Belle FP1.
After the N97 it was never about how good the Symbian actually was. It was just about how the general public felt about it. Now people tell me that Elop killed Symbian and while he did put it out of it’s misery, he didn’t administer that lethal injection.
After the N97 Nokia was losing revenues and very soon that was going to turn into lost market shares after the lower pricing just didn’t work anymore. Now that decline continued even after the company released the highly praised Symbian^3 and the N8. They lost 5% of the market share in the Q3 and and finally when the Symbian^3 and the N8 were released early Q4, their market shares continued declining and they lost another 5% in the christmas quarter. That’s really scary since Nokia just released their new highly anticipated Symbian OS with it’s shiny new UI. That UI was expected to be able to challenge the market leaders but what happened? They actually lost market share!
Now we all know what happened next. After losing market share two quarters in a row with their new highly anticipated Symbian^3 they just had to make a reality check and do something. The consumers continued avoiding the Symbian and Nokia’s old customers were buying something else. Nokia was headed towards it’s end if it was going to stick with the Symbian. The end. Consumers just thought it was just too crappy. The Symbian had lost it’s reputation.

+ Excuse me, from my perspective, and I mean from different countries and markets, this has little or no impact. Coming from a different market outside the USA.

+ It made little or no impact to some markets such as Russia, India, SEA Countries and mostly Asian and Latin American regions, which still predominantly use Symbian, although the landscape is quickly changing brought about by no-confidence vote of the CEO of Nokia himself, as per 02-11-2011 “Burning Platform Memo,” a.k.a., Osborne (hold off for something better coming in the distant future) +Ratner (our current products are garbage) Effect.

Nokia’s reputation was lost all around the world. Not just in the US. You haven’t noticed that the N97 is still spoiling the reputation of the Symbian? It’s global, really.
What are you talking about Osborne? Nokia has been releasing future product way too early for years. Nothing has changed with that what it comes to the Windows Phone. You should remember that the N8 was announced half a year before it actually shipped. The N97, I can’t actually tell that without looking from Google but that was just another announcement made prematurely.

WP won’t cost Nokia hundreds of million in one quarter just in development costs. The development of the Symbian took insane amounts of cash better used with something else. It’s just cheaper to buy licenses from Microsoft. So, WP is already making better compared to the Symbian. From the business view Symbian is just a black hole sucking nice and good money inside it.
How do you think Elop could have brought Nokia back to profitability with products the consumers don’t want to buy? That’s Symbian and MeeGo.
Simplistic lumping MeeGo in there, the promotional work had barely started.
MeeGo proper wasn’t due to be delivered till Q4 11` at the earliest…
There was to be 2x Harmattan devices before-hand (N950/N9), & possibly 1-2 more.
It needed 1x more yr to demonstrate that a following was building strongly.
Of course it’s following has been feeble in the past yr, the strategy was killed 16mth ago.
Things could’ve looked quite different by now.
I personally favoured a dual OS approach:
WP for top-to-mid (maybe not quite as low as is planned now).
MeeGo for top-end only initially, but to cover a broader range than WP LT.
S^3 to continue to be phased-out, but in a far more nuanced way, & a bit more quickly.

Currently I am considering to buy the Nokia 808 PureView, probably the last Nokia branded phone, as I knew it, for a long, long time to come. The curtains have been dropped, the chairs has been cleared, and as much as I would have wanted for the show to go on, the actors have been murdered.

That’s why I made a decision to get both. Since I cannot have an upgrade path with the Nokia 808 PureView RM-807, as well as apps, might as well get an Android camera phone alongside.
Coincidentally, by no means not an accident but by a grand scheme, Microsoft has everything to gain from this fiasco. Even if they cannot convert old farts like me from Symbian, Maemo, MeeGo, etc., to Windows Phone, the most natural path is to get an Android phone. And you know Android pays Microsoft.

Symbian is excellent if not the best in resource management. But the keyboard, browser and music player suck incredibly, and those are main disadvantages for the average smartphone consumer.
I have both N8 and Lumia 800 and i prefer N8′s keyboard despite smaller display size. Dont’t know why… maybe it’s that haptic feedback. I also miss arrow keys on other platforms. They’re great if u made a typo and want to fix something. Anyway, maybe i should just use that word prediction more often…
I like the concept of the haptic feedback. It’s a great innovation for the people with numb fingertips. The rest can just feel when they touch the display.
It has nothing to do with numb fingertips though.
Also, music player on Symbian is fine for me. At least u can change equaliser right in application, without having to go to system options like in iOS.
I have always used Opera Mobila and even if it’s not very fast or smooth on my N8, it’s much more comfortable than IE, not to mention functionality, ability to save pages, download manager, much better tab handling, text reflow.
music player sucks? geez you must be blind! WP cant even scroll through a song with your fingers! you have to hold the foreward and back button to skip through. Now that sucks!
These things are much more complicated than you may think.
Nokia 603 has still much more power than those ancient 386 PCs. And they were able to multitask dozens of programs under some kind of Unix, for example SCO Unix or BSD Unix.
But I admit the video is impressive!

Indeed. Symbian is just for feature phones. Meaning they feature more features than other phones.
Smartphones are for people who want their phones to be smarter than they are, and make their decisions for them. Like how much money to throw at service providers to cover the data cost of receiving advertisements and ‘cloud service’ spyware.
It’s not about the features if the people think they suck.
Now the other phones really give you some good stuff so it won’t actually matter.
The last of the current true multi-tasking mobile OSes.. Hope RIM keeps the multi-tasking open with BB10 & Nokia with Meltemi..
I don’t want to start a flame war, but honestly, I don’t consider the true preemptive multitasking to be as important as it used to be.
It’s extremely important for servers. But it has in fact quite limited relevance on personal devices.
Honestly, I need a true multitasking only on slow devices. Even more, I probably hate multitasking. I hate to be forced to multitask, just because my computer (desktop or pocket) is too slow. I have been multitasking extensively for years – but probably just out of desperation, not voluntarily.
Perhaps women would think different, but for men, multitasking is a kind of torture. We accept it… if there’s no other way.
You are not forced to multitask – case in point, you can always kill an app on the N9 with a simple swipe down, should you want to. But then proper multitasking gives you the choice to do the things how you desire – I, for example, cannot live without SSH server on my device, both personally (for syncing, I barely ever use storage mode or anything of the sort, it’s far easier to have your device automatically mounted in your computer filesystem whenever in your network range) and professionally (servers report directly to my device, giving me in-time notifications and allowing me to maintain them even if I’m on the beach) – while I couldn’t have it to work properly (read it: before the N900) I used to carry a MBP with me mostly because of that. And no multitasking == no background daemons == no SSH server (and other custom servers I use) on my device.
You may not need it, and that’s all fine – nobody forces you to use it. I, however, do need it. It’s the most crucial thing and the biggest deal breaker if lacking when I’m seeking for a new device.
I’m trying to imagine some use case for SSH server on my phone, but sorry – it’s light years beyond my imagination.
Of course, I CAN invent some artificial scenario for it, but it’s just a pure science fiction. Perhaps 0.001 % of users will value it.
Be serious please, no sane person is going to run SSH server on its phone, except for, perhaps, MI5 agents.
You missed the gist…
It’s about that you may never argue in favor of the absence of anything beneficial if it’s pure existence won’t hinder yourself. So it would be good if all users valued every feature, even if they don’t use it, for those who would as long as they are not loosing anything along!
I never understood why people engage in a discussion and represent their POV while it does want to take away leaving others in a worse situation, while doing it the other way won’t leave those people in a bad situation but others in a good one.

Yes, I think Viipottaja and I were talking about this topic before – certain ‘luxury’ feature. By that it’s not a westernised ideal of ‘luxury’ as extravagant, but luxury in that in a very rare minority will actually care about it, but it’s nice to be there.
YES it is important to address the core set of features to attract the majority of consumers by doing the core activities of a smartphone extremely well. I think that with over a year’s ownership of WP, it ticks those boxes.
However, i also strongly agree with you that Nokia would do well to implement these ‘luxury’ (again with that particular definition) feature. It is difficult to do anything in WP7.5 but hopefully Nokia can address these must needed changes in WP8.
Imagine you can receive Skype calls even when the app isn’t in foreground. Imagine you could open sixth app and then return to the first at the exact same position you left it without worrying whenever developer properly implemented this feature. Imagine you can start file download and then go to play angry birds without stopping the download. And so on.
It’s really ridiculous to claim that true multitasking doesn’t matter, especially when, as this Symbian video showed again, there are no reason for these draconian restrictions on current HW, it’s only because of the technical limitations of WP itself. One can only wonder why Elop picked WP.
I can tell marketplace to download and install a game whilst I’m playing angry birds.
I am really happy to see that when multitasking in FP1 on 512mb handsets, it appears to work much better than before. This would need, as with anything, first hand experience to confirm (i.e. not simply a fresh install) but otherwise it looks great. Like with N9/N900.
The multitasking in the video in the games is quite similar for WP. Do something, click it and resume gameplay precisely where you were last. Sometimes it will instantly continue – but i prefer the resume button to be there.
One problem I did have with N8/N9/N900 true multitasking is when I accidentally leave apps in the background that eat my battery. e.g. N9 was fully charged last night. I must have left the camera app in the background – and it just died on me now.
Ideally there would be some way to manage this as well. There are some pros and cons about how Lumia ‘multitasks’ – it perhaps should be called ‘task switching’ as it can do that very, very quickly with no management. no need to think about how many apps are ever open or the need to close an app to make sure everything else works fine or doesn’t eat battery.
Most apps now are working within the instant resume. Apps that don’t are annoying and I can understand your frustration as to why the dev would have to be the one needing to implement this when the phone should be the one doing the multitasking.

Also how does it address apps that are accidentally left running in the background? I’m not so much concerned on the performance side (I’d be aware something was slowing down and close other apps) but does it terminate an app if unused for a certain amount of time so it doesn’t drain battery?
All programs that are not excluded are terminated to free up RAM. You can specify which will not be terminated as per application and global settings.

OK, it seems they fixed the background download thing.
Yeah, when you do mistake with badly written app, you can empty your battery. And with autocorrect you can inadvertently send embarrassing messages. Are we going to ban swype or autocorrect? And of course MS isn’t crippling multitasking to this extent to save users from few corner cases, WP simply isn’t capable to do this with decent speed and battery live regardless of the apps.
I thought of writing a longish article called `You have a multitasking OS? Great, learn to use it properly!` quite a while ago, especially when I saw how my gf is using her N9, constantly closing the apps she doesn’t use and so.
While it may seem contra-intuitive, in many cases it is better battery-wise (not to mention speed-wise) to leave the app running than to close it. Of course, as in other areas of life, with great power comes great responsibility. If the developer of a certain app is, hmmm how shall i put it, daft – you shouldn’t leave such an app in the background. A well developed app will eat exactly 0 CPU cycles while being in the background unless it needs to, and will stay on the conservative side when it comes to RAM memory. A bad app will constantly do something it doesn’t need to, thus increasing the consumption.
In most cases, built-in apps are well written and properly tested, so unless you run into RAM issues on low-RAM devices, it really is better to leave those running in the background if you use them constantly, than to close and re-open them all the time. When you open an app, it will have to transfer its working data to RAM, which often includes reading copious amount of data from the flash storage and organizing it in the working RAM memory – this eats battery the most. Also, when you are closing an app it usually needs not only to free up the memory it uses, but also store something on the flash memory for further use, clean up swaps and so on – which also eats battery. However, if you have enough RAM not to employ swap or so on, and if the app is written properly not to use resources it doesn’t need to, at least while in the background – it will actually consume less battery to leave it running as it doesn’t have to go through the above two steps. Not to mention that it will ‘start’ faster since the first step won’t happen when you launch it again.
Of course, games or other RAM memory intensive apps shouldn’t be left running in the background because they will consume all the available RAM so when you start the next app, their RAM will be put into a swap memory, and then again upon starting them it will be re-read back, kind of like what WP7 does. That’s essentially same as with closing the app and starting it again when needed, as you don’t save any battery by leaving them running.
Oh, well, if I get around writing that article I’ll let you guys know…
Here is just one of certainly non-artificial scenarios, and certainly not highly-specialized/niche one, where having a SSH server (or any server you can use to access files for that matter) can be really, really useful.
I already mentioned it above – whenever I’m within my home WiFi network range, my N9 (and my N900s) automagically gets mounted as a drive on my system. Or in images:
(I have no idea where my N9 is at the moment in the room, but here it is in full glory on my desktop)
Sure, it’s slower than if I was to connect it via USB directly and use the storage mode, but this way I get the access to the whole system (not just the MyDocs mount-point), I don’t have to worry about corrupting the flash storage if I remove it from the USB port in midst of writing to it, I can finely control the levels of access, and it’s just convenient not to have to plug a cable to synchronize. And what’s more, it simultaneously connects to all my computers (well, technically my computers connect to it), and my phones even connect with each other (my N900, as still being my prime device, always has my N9 system mounted within it – eventually it will go the other way as well, I still haven’t had the time to mess with N9′s kernel to include sshfs-fuse within it). And this is just one use case that allows me to easily sync with rsync over the air, but there are a couple of servers running on both, my N9 and my N900s, for the things that cannot be done via file-system access.
Oh, yeah, as I’ve mentioned above, it connects simultaneously to all my computers, which includes a PC which shares Linux and Windows, and my MNB, so I have it setup on all three major OSes. Here are the same screenshots but taken while booted in Windows 7:
What was that, WP8 was supposed to have tight integration with Windows, right? How tighter can you get than this? And, again, this is just a simple use case, yet a thing that couldn’t be done without true multitasking or a system baked in the OS itself that would anyway multitask.

Well, the post in question ( this one ) still says ‘Awaiting moderation’, it’s in a nested thread as I lost the track while trying to find the right way to embed them.
I actually used thumbnail images (170×120 or something) with a link to a big picture, so if the post is parsed OK you can freely delete all my comments and failed attempts to fix it. As a developer, I believe it is better to work on an OS with true multi-tasking than one with fast app-switching like in the “modern” mobile OSes.. It gives me more power & freedom to help my apps perform better while in the meantime, give the users an option to disable it..
Also, I’m a man and multi-tasking isn’t a problem for me. Infact, I love multi-tasking and I want my phone to be as capable..

Hope FP1 isn’t that hard to hack.. doing it on the default belle now is so easy. Whoever wants to hammer me, please don’t – hacking your Symbian phone is a great way of opening up the software to interesting modifications such as the camera quality, menu led light, vibration on call reception, etc.
What? The music player on Symbian phones are bad? Are you kidding me? Symbian phones have one of best DSPs found on phones…. Well, with the marketing that Nokia is giving to Lumia devices, they believe that you could execute tasks quicker with windows phone. The ui is also fluid and smooth.
Of course a lot of features have been taken out or has not yet arrived with windows phone. That’s the trade off.. A number of users that are used with the features of symbian are either sticking with the belle phones or has moved on to android. Belle is feature packed, haha Nokia should have highlighted that.
Some people want features and functionality while others prefer smooth ui and user experience. Take your pick
It’s easier to make feature phones with less functionality. Compal ( generic manufacturer of almost every mobile, laptop, desktop IT and electronics) makes them, then Nokia and Microsoft slaps in their logo and branding. Easy money if enough people believe the marketing hype.

No wonder they were not able to integrate outstanding and existing I/O options from Nokia / Symbian. It was simply “ALIEN” to them, or Nokia and Microsoft opted out of these entirely to cut corners. Essentially what you would pay for the same money, you are getting less in features. More money and profit, which is not a bad thing, if you are Nokia and Microsoft. But if you are the consumer, well, you can opt to buy or not to buy.
I see so many comments here asking why Nokia had dropped Symbian when Belle is so good. Here’s my 2 cents (you can disagree with me, and I won’t argue with you).
Firstly, I agree that Symbian Belle is great! It’s a good alternative to Android. However, Symbian Belle did not occur 4 years ago. If it did, the whole landscape would have been different. Elop won’t be here. Android (maybe) won’t be here. It will be Symbian Belle, the competitive OS, vs iOS. Unfortunately, Symbian Belle took so many years to evolve to the smooth state it is now. Would the old Symbian S60v3 (N97) have benefited from a faster CPU and more RAM? Undoubtedly. But I also read (but cannot confirm) that the old code base was not able to use a faster CPU and RAM… it had to be rewritten to do so.
Why did Nokia go exclusively for WP and not run a multi-OS race? Couple of reasons I suspect may have been so.
#1, Nokia knew it doesn’t have the resource to do so many things. Let’s face it. It’s not just making a great phone (engineering/manufacturing), good OS (R&D), but also the marketing and selling. AND engaging developers to join your ecosystem. One comment above was probably right… N97 really spoilt the reputation for Symbian, AND Nokia. It became an uphill battle for Nokia to engage developers, Operators, and Customers to believe in Symbian. It also means to do all the above work, a lot of money is needed. That’s just Symbian. Add Meego, a brand new OS, you need even more money to do the same (Marketing, Developers etc). Nokia probably cannot afford to fight the battles on so many fronts. Don’t forget S40 too (and Melteme). And whatever legacy phones they need to patch. It is ALOT of work, people. And the limited resources here are time, money, and mindshare (developers/customers)… all the while Nokia is bleeding market share.
Whether we agree with Elop’s decision to throw in with WP, is a moot point. Water under the bridge. Why throw away Symbian/Meego to go for just only WP? Above reasons (limited resources), and probably leads to point 2 also.
#2. Microsoft would probably put this as a condition to Nokia (“make WP exclusive”), in exchange for Microsoft’s help. What Nokia got, was money for marketing, and a future possibility to outsource the software development part to MS so it devotes resources on making great phones. Back to basics. Microsoft is a keen partner (since it has alot of stake to see Nokia succeed at least for short term), so it made a much better partner than Google (who already has champions in Samsung and HTC).
I am a bit wary how this plays out in the long term. Once Windows 8 (or Apollo) is out, will Microsoft still treat Nokia like its champion, when other manufacturers also jump on W8? Hard to say… we can only watch and see.

#1 Nonsense. Nokia had good cash position and was profitable, there is absolutely no evidence they could not market Symbian/Qt/MeeGo because of shortage of money, you are just making it up. That they are now struggling to stay afloat is direct consequence of Elop’s WP strategy. And the funny thing is that Nokia is actually planning to push to market their own and new ecosystem (maybe two separate, but who knows) that is supposedly build on the same technology as the one killed by Elop, only without backing from Intel or China Mobile.
#2 Nonsense. The “money” from MS is actually at best balanced by minimal SW license purchases by Nokia. So in reality Nokia is spending real resources on marketing and gets licenses to WP, which they are trying to salvage for MS, in return.
And anyway, who kills profitable business and sells own future for $250 million per quarter? I mean, when Nokia is dead next year, do you expect that MS will team up with Apple, which will immediately kill iOS and then wait two years for WP9, all that for $300 million per quarter in free licenses?

I just wish one Nokia engineer would show up on here and answer some questions to silence all the rabid fanboys.
Symbian isn’t perfect. In fact, it’s far from great, but it could have been so much more had Nokia not made a mess of it by killing off all the other UIs at Symbian Foundation and internally (UIQ, Hildon, Orbit, etc.) and somehow thinking Series 60 and Symbian could be combined to create a competitive touch-based OS.
The rest is history. What happened to support for multicore processors, ARM Cortex processors and higher resolutions? All demoed by Symbian Foundation or other licensees, yet still just vaporware to Nokia. Qt and QML arrived late and are still works in progress, while Android and iOS SDKs have made it so much easier for developers to code and make money on those platforms.
So my Symbian device can multitask 57 apps or whatever… I really don’t care. I keep fewer than 10 apps open at a time anyway. I had to wait almost a year for Anna’s portrait Qwerty keyboard – I can get loads of free and paid keyboards on Android right now.
Where is Symbian’s greatness now?
People keep telling us that the Qt is such a great framework to program with. But what does that actually mean? It’s much better after the old Symbian but is it actually so great to use if you compare it to the leading platforms? Sure, there is a half baked version of Qt for the Android, but using that you break the Dalvik compatibility and your program no longer works in every Android device.
The biggest problem with the Qt is that you can’t use it to make mobile software for the most profitable platform. That forces you to code your application without the Qt if you want to hit the actual honey pot.
How good is Qt compared to the native Dalvik programming or the Cocoa? Mobile Qt is currently peanuts compared to those so what’s the actual gain in efficiency what it comes to the workload of the coders?
Gotta tell you this… Qt and QML is a joy to work with compared to the old way with Symbian, but the developers actually coding Qt for Symbian say it’s a right old pain in the ass with plenty of bugs left over. It’s telling at Qt 4.7.4/4.8 are to be the last versions on Symbian while Meego might get the much more advanced Qt5.
It’s too bad that current mobile OSes all have different development environments. You really can’t code once and expect to run on all. Heck, even QML widgets look and behave differently on Symbian and Meego, probably because two separate teams were working on them. I think Meltemi will be Qt’s last bastion as no other mobile OS supports the framework natively.
Another thing on the difficulty of developing for Symbian – the whole Symbian Signed nonsense. The sheer hassle of getting a developer certificate, testing your app, submitting it to Nokia and getting it ready for the Nokia Store means developers with limited time and resources would look to other platforms instead e.g. Android and iOS.
On the whole, Belle, Qt, 808, whatever all came too little and too late to save Symbian.

Symbian was already losing customers since the N97 was introduced to the market and the big winner here is Android with it’s hugely popular ecosystem. It’s all about how nice and shiny the user experience is. That includes the markets for the media and applications. It’s really great to be able to get one of those Android devices and boy what kind of a selection you have to choose from!
The N97 was a real disgrace to the Nokia and it’s developers. Now luckily Nokia has some hope with the Lumia. I admit that the road may be a bit bumby but there is hope.
