N9 PR 1.3 coming “soon” – Small but valuable update? PR 1.4 possible?

| June 29, 2012 | 78 Replies

As always, take these with pinches of salt.

So Nokia Philippines tweeted that the N9 will get PR 1.3 soon. We knew it was coming, with rumours suggesting end of May. Its now July (almost) and the only info we have had, that it still is in the works despite all the job cuts, was an email to a developer.

We have seen Nokia PR stuff up when it comes to announcing updates, so I’m not getting my hopes up at all. In fact, I’m pretty content with the way my N9 works after a few tweaks made recently.

The second rumour, comes from NokioTeca. They have apparently been told by a Nokia spokes person that PR 1.4 is planned for the N9. This post was a few weeks back, before we heard of the cuts at Nokia, so there is even less chance that this is true.

In my opinion guys, be happy you got 2 great updates. Anything after 1.2 is a huge blessing.

Keeping my fingers crossed, although the N9 is good as-is. Kudos to Nokia if they make it even better.
Any news about the Belle Refresh for 1st gen S^3 devices btw? IIRC someone mentioned it was supposed to land this week, but that doesn’t seem to materialise.

I seriously just want a better Skype with video call…

Currently, the skype quality is just horrible…

        • incognito says:

Hmmm, I use Skype every day on my N9 and it works quite good, at least on WiFi…

          • sina88 says:

Using skype too everyday. Wi-Fi and 3G. Works for me much better than any mobile version of Skype I used before. Make sure mobile data connection is fast enough.

            • erik says:

Anyway, does anyone know how to send SMSs via skype? Is that me or this is just missing? Cheers

              • Shane says:

Why would you want send SMS’s via Skype…
Skype connects to PSTN networks via InternetPSTN gateways.
You’re ultimately still going to have to pay to send via it, as you’d need to pay for Skype-out.
I can’t imagine the savings being huge, it may even be more expensive than just shopping around for a better carrier.

                • erik says:

I’d send SMS’s via Skype when I am abroad. My carrier is from EU. When I am in a non EU country a single sms back home can cost up to 60 cents (!).
With Skype on my old 5800 I could find a hotspot and send SMS’s home for 10 cents.
That’s a whopping 20-30 euro difference for each travel.
So I bring my old phone along with my new N9. Any work around? Thanks for replying

                  • Shane says:

So find a carrier that offers a better deal, you’re being ripped-off.
If you pressure you’re current one, they may even do a special for you etc.

No idea if it’s possible on the N9 or if there’s a workaround, try searching TMO.

                    • erik says:

thanx, I searched to no result. This carrier has otherwise great deals and I am reluctant to change it. I am trying to find a website that let me send SMS’s via web -without a client that would mean a lot of clicks though – otherwise I’ll keep travelling with 2 phones. I can forgive a small drawback to the best phone ever ;)

                    • Shane says:

                      Good attitude….
If I had time to search for a soln I would.
Alas too busy lately sorry :(

      • prashant says:

was there any official confirmation or rumors,
well i don’t think so as navifirm is not showing anything.

        • Arie says:

Please shut up. You are absolutely annoying.

I have seen PR1.3, it’s being worked on and there is no major differences that I have seen between PR1.3 and PR1.2

If you have valuable information to post about PR1.3 say it. I’ve said many times and even in that tmo thread that PR1.3 was not coming at the end of May. The last commit was from 2 weeks ago.

So unless you have some hard evidence that is more than mine, don’t make any comments about there is no official confirmation of it’s existence because it’s not on Navifirm.

          • Shane says:

Last commits in the public repos that I’m aware of stopped way longer than 2wks ago.
Where did you see the last commits from 2-wks ago?

And how did you “supposedly” get hold of PR1.3?
And if you really did, why on earth are sharing with everyone what you know!?

            • Arie says:

              These aren’t public repos :)

I never said I have it, I saw it, reread what I said.

              • Shane says:

Why aren’t they using the public/well-known repos anymore to display progress?

Assuming there really is “internal repos” where work’s ongoing or was until very recently.
Why would you (not a employee) be given read-only access, & what would be the pt unless you could compile a recent build to test?

And why would you share what you’ve seen?
                That’s not exactly very professional…
PR1.3 sounds very dull (to say the least) if your observations are accurate/true.

                I hope you’re 100% certain with everything you’ve claimed.
Else you’re giving everyone a false conception of things.
No trying to be abusive, but if you really do have accurate insights (which you seem to be claiming) then you need to be careful w/that info.

  2. HappyN9User says:

I wouldn’t expect many updates considering that Makrygiannis (the Meego boss) is leaving the company in August.

    • jiipee says:

Someone at TMO said that an outside company might take care of the N9 maintenance. Most probably there will be no feature updates.

    • Shaun says:

Makrygiannis is/was Director of MeeGo Applications btw. Still, since many of the remaining issues are in the applications themselves, not the OS, it’s definitely a big loss.

I’m hoping something is salvageable out of Nokia’s Maemo/MeeGo/Meltemi efforts and we see a 3rd party pick up application development if Nokia don’t open source the apps.

  3. Max says:

All I want them is to fix my maps. Even with full maps downloaded, there are so many gaps. Drive always needs to go online to find a route. What a shame :(

    • turdworldindian says:

Yes, what’s up with that drive app? Why should I have to login to Nokia services while I am f**king driving? Do they except everyone would have a decent signal on the road to sign in to their services?

Since it was completely unusable I forgot it even existed.

    • Shane says:

Weird, that’s not the case for me at all.
I just dload maps & away I go, no need for it to go online constantly.

      • Max says:

Strange, I have had this problem since PR 1.0. No amount of hard resets have solved it. I have the whole UK map downloaded, but I still can see partial maps, e.g edinburg has no maps when I zoom to street level. I have even tried the manual method to download maps, but still the same problem.

        • Oreg says:

I had similar issue too. There is an option in Maps for deleting all maps. I deleted them and dowloaded them again. It resorved for me. Have you tried this?

  4. Oliver says:

Have my N9 for a week now, and while I would welcome any further updates, I have yet to find something that really bothers me about 1.2. There are some trivial things, most of which could be fixed by some hacking – like dark theme, being able to email notes, being able to send songs from the music player via BT… basically some stuff that my E7 has. Only really miss the E7 keyboard as friends with a Crackberry will now easily outrun me when texting.
Otherwise, this is probably the most impressive device since the Newton Message Pad 2100.

    • zlutor says:

“as friends with a Crackberry will now easily outrun me when texting” – Swype them out! ;-)

      • Oliver says:

Wow, that works much better than expected!

        • incognito says:

Swype on the N9 works wonderfully, quite a number of my posts here were written using it, and I am known to go into scribemania mode from time to time. Too bad only English is supported… Either way, I’d even argue that Swype works better on my N9 than on my SGSII.

          (Now a random rant)

Well, I don’t type as much on the MNB with it anymore as the latest CSS changes to MNB made it quite hard to follow or reply to nested posts on the N9′s default browser, and FF has problems with the N9′s keyboard while Opera uses their own, built-in one… I miss the HW qwerty of my N900 which these days I use only for work – it’s not that the Swype (or even the regular keyboard) is bad, I just don’t like half of my screen to be taken by the keyboard and it’s devilishly hard to navigate text areas or the page itself while typing something, not to mention that auto-zoom can sometimes make it really difficult to even close the keyboard so you can zoom out…

          • ityu says:

There are close to 30 supported languages for Swype. You can enable/disable languages under Swype settings. if you have multiple languages enabled you can Swype between keyboards when you have the keyboard on the screen.

          • amcieks says:

Huh, only english supported? I switch between English, Polish and Dutch all the time..

            • incognito says:

Sorry, I meant to say it doesn’t support my native language (Serbian) thus I’m limited only to English…

          • Shane says:

            @incognito

That’s why you need this man! ;-P
            http://o2t.nxtech.no/?page_id=58
I’m going to chase-this-up again soon.
Last time I spoke to the founder…
He was confident to have it available by around Q3 2012.

            • incognito says:

Interesting concept (tho I hate rubber/foldable keyboards), and I don’t like the idea of having to place it on a flat surface so I could use it… The question is – would it work with the N9 (if its purely NFC doesn’t it require some NFC-HID protocol or something?), would the N9 recognize it as a keyboard and forgo opening a virtual keyboard once this one is connected?

Know anyone who used a BT keyboard with the N9? That should at least tackle the last question…

              • Shane says:

["(tho I hate rubber/foldable keyboards), and I don’t like the idea of having to place it on a flat surface so I could use it"]

Agreed, I guess that’s the sacrifice for ultimate portability.
Still, the pudding will be in the tasting, it may actually “feel” much better than it looks.

["The question is – would it work with the N9 (if its purely NFC doesn’t it require some NFC-HID protocol or something?"]

It all gets fully explained from about this point till the end of the thread (pg 6).
                http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=81493&page=3

["would the N9 recognize it as a keyboard and forgo opening a virtual keyboard once this one is connected?"]

Yeah that’s a problem, I know we can make the VKB go away in the terminal.
But I’m not sure if this is possible with many other native/non-native apps.

["Know anyone who used a BT keyboard with the N9? That should at least tackle the last question"]

Yeah plenty of folks are now, it’s even discussed in that thread I linked to at one point.
I think it’s not possible to hide the VKB for many apps though.
But TBH I haven’t been following it all closely for about 4mth now, so other solutions may have arisen.

        • Banderpop says:

I used to want a keyboard with real buttons, but I find I can type far more quickly with Swype now, and the only way to be faster still is with a full size keyboard from a desktop PC.

I’d recommend Symbian Swype users to not bother with trying to use it in landscape mode. For ease of use, go with portrait so your thumb doesn’t have to move very far to get from one side of the keyboard to the other. This may apply to N9 also but I can’t recall if it has a landscape keyboard.

          • incognito says:

It has, but the landscape Swype keyboard takes 2/3 of the screen leaving you with just a tiny window to see a line or two of text you’ve typed. I use Swype exclusively in portrait, if I need a landscape keyboard I switch to the regular one.

    • milanjakob says:

@oliver workaround: download filebox from nokia store and you can share any file via bt.

  5. turdworldindian says:

I hope it has the fix for the annoying exchange email bug in offline mode.

When reading html emails for exchange, the mail client tries to connect to the internet. If not connected, the entire message vanishes — even if it was fully downloaded!

Other than that there are a few scenarios with visible lag during swiping. Like after when you kill a resource hungry app like firefox.

If both are fixed, it will be the best phone ever. Wait, it already is the best phone ever. Ever ever.

Sadly my last Nokia ever too.

  6. Silthice says:

I want more fluid response from my N9 plus ability to send multiple pics via BT and sending song/vid through BT… Well I love to share stuff ^_^

    • incognito says:

Install Filebox and share your files directly as much as you want.

      • Oliver says:

Have it but it is not as convenient.

        • Shane says:

What could be more convenient than having a full-blown file-manager that lets you share files via BT?

          • Oliver says:

Well, eg on Symbian I can send a music track directly from the player app. I do not have open filebox, navigate music and find the right file from within thousands of tracks.

            • incognito says:

The share function was deliberatly omitted from the Music player app, due to some `preventing piracy` rah rah… The APIs were there and they didn’t have to do much to implement it, but they chose not to, or that’s how they’ve explained it.

              • Oliver says:

rah rah indeed *sigh* Anyway, that would be a neat feature to have. Just like being able to eMail notes would be.

                • incognito says:

At least there is some explanation on why isn’t it there in the Music player, don’t know what’s their excuse with the notes – IIRC you could share notes over email/BT/SMS even on the N900, let alone Symbian…

  7. idans21 says:

Be happy we got 2 great updates??? How can I be happy when I spend $600+ on a phone that’s supposed to be supported till 2015+, I don’t understand how anyone can be happy. Every other company has their head on straight except Nokia. Bug in iPhone? Apple quickly releases fix. HTC, Samsung etc….Same support. Nokia? You have to wait till they bundle everything in one which could keep you waiting long after many new devices are coming and going. The fact that it’s coming on to a year now after the N9′s release where the N9 still does not at all live up to $600 worth of expectations is cruel to consumer to say the least especially after what they did to us with the N900 and hoping this time it would be different. My fault for being a fanboy I guess.

    • Oliver says:

Do you have a list of bugs?

    • Shane says:

2015 tops, they never said 2015+….
We don’t know if they won’t contract out minor updates till then, so you can calm down.
It’s likely that PR1.3 is the last MAJOR update though, & the last one by the harmattan team (what’s left of it)

    • Peter says:

“Support until 2015″ does not mean firmware updates until 2015. It means support for technical problems, major software issues and available documentation.

  8. BJ says:

I, for one am seriously hoping they fix the admittedly rare issue with the N9 constantly losing cellular network connection when it shows you the bars and the network name but can’t place or receive calls or messages. And you never know it’s in this ‘mode’. Happens to me sometimes as often as 4 times a day making the phone completely unusable!

    • Shane says:

Yikes, never had that happen for me, sucks to be you! :-/

    • incognito says:

I’d even more so like the fix for BT for my car infotainment system (or I’ll have to resort to do what I did with the N900) and even more annoying is when it enters in WiFi search mode and breaks the BT streaming for a couple of seconds so that your music over A2DP sounds like a CD skipping… I know that it’s due to both BT and WiFi being on the same chip, but it can be solved with some clever buffering and WiFi search algorithms… Or at least to disable WiFi auto-search when connected over BT to a headset or other streaming devices… Oh, well…

      • Shane says:

Agreed on that BT/WiFi issue incognito…
That bug is one of the most annoying, yet one of the most easily resolvable!
So annoying how they’ve been almost totally non-responsive about it in the bug-tracker since the day it was raised!

        • incognito says:

The whole BT stack is botched up on the N9… It almost appears as an afterthought, which is a shame… The again, given the number of people that worked on it and constrains they’ve had, I guess they had far more important things to tackle than the BT issues… Still, it would be nice if it worked properly.

          • Shane says:

Still, it’s not heaps more botched-up than the N900 was.
And that got improved lots over time, so one can “hope” :-/

  9. Janne says:

Thank you to the Harmattan team!

Your work under hard circumstances is appreciated.

  12. D_G says:

I love this phone…what can I say?! No need to dwell more that there will not be further upgraded models of this phone produced ever…
The only complain I have about the N9 when speaking on speakers its not loud or good enough…besides this, it’s a fantastic piece of technology…

  13. Andy says:

Brilliant that the update is coming despite everyone clearing out their desks at Nokia. I’m very happy with the way my N9 works with PR1.2 but there are a handful of tweaks that turn this thing into a superphone, and tbh, even *if* this is the last bit of support, I would still keep this over any_other_phone, simply because the OS design is just unsurpassed. Best phone ever.

    • Oliver says:

Yes, full iCal support would be nice. Reminds me, I still need to thank the guy who wrote the N9 iSync plugin.

    • Shane says:

      @Nilux

Most (all IIRC?) of that’s possible now but it’s quite “hackish.
There’s no pretty GUI’s but all the necessary underlying sw’s there.
There’s a few threads at TMO that explain how to set it all up.
      I haven’t tried doing it all yet….

  16. Mohammad says:

Why some ppl r so much in need of software update? Change your mobile if you get bored of it… the day I feel I have no interest in N9, I will buy another one.

    • Kalle says:

Well maybe not everyone has the money to buy a new €400-600 phone when they get bored to the old one…

    • zlutor says:

Majority of N9 users wait for sw update(s) fixing some issues. It has nothing to do with getting bored with the device…

Of course, new features ‘for free’ are also welcome (e.g. DLNA support, working FFC, etc.) :-)
