Microsoft backing Qi as it joins Wireless Power Consortium
Nokia was a staunch proponent of Qi Wireless Charging. It was built in to the new Nokia Lumia WP8 handsets, or it could be achieved via cover (or even USB connector). The point was to make charging even easier. It wasn’t that charging was difficult, no. Wireless charging however did make it super convenient to just place your phone on a surface and have it charging then pick it up again without getting stuck to wires. As it got more common, it was nice to be able to pop into coffee shops or airports and charge on the go.
Microsoft (as well as Samsung) have joined The Wireless Power Consortium, further driving Qi’s adoption. Since AT&T is backing an alternative to QI, their version of the 1520 is lacking in built wireless charging. Qi however is pretty much becoming the global standard for wireless charging.
Nokia have many wireless charging accessories including charging plates, stands, car chargers, BT stereos and even truly wireless, portable chargers (that can also charge wirelessly).
