Being busy doing something at the front of the wheel, clearly not paying attention to the road is a goal that Nokia HERE Maps reiterates as shown in the picture above. Why? It’s not to break laws, but it’s for their pursuit of Autonomous Driving. Google is famously pioneering self-driving cars. Nokia also sees that “the intersection of love, design and location will enable autonomous driving”.

How cars can use mapping data, the latest, most up to date mapping data that would also know traffic details and the proximity of moving and static objects around it in-order to safely drive. That’s not even all of the concerns of those behind autonomous cars and even that sounds daunting.

Some of the comments mentioned facetiously drinking alcohol and getting into one of these cars. I’m not promoting that but should ideally one of these be 99.9% foolproof, then it could mean someone safely getting home without being a danger to others. Though ideally, that person would get into a taxi. Imagine taxis themselves become self driven. You order a taxi, it comes to you. You can now fit 5 people into a taxi. Although that would mean no one could help you with your bag if  you’re on your own and you needed help.

Cheers Alvester for the tip!
