Accessories: Throwback Thursday – Nokia DT-22 Camera Grip for N93 on Nokia Lumia 1520 and other phones
Quick heads up on the Nokia DT-22 camera grip that was originally for the N93. As you can see, we’re using it on the Nokia Lumia 1520 but you could just as easily use it for the 925, 1020, and any other camera phones as you’re not placing it to fit the width of the device.
The N93 was a clamshell phone with a rotating flippy screen. I’ve used this tripod on other devices since, and I thought what with the likes of the 1520 being so huge I can’t find a tripod mount for a phone to fit it, this was the next best thing. Moreover, there was a clamp stand from Nokia Connects that we got hold of before but the metal parts scratched the 925 and the 1020 (though the 1020 now is on its own camera grip which we’ll share tomorrow. You’ve seen it before but this one’s our unboxing and thoughts on it).
This one’s real easy to use. The DT-22 is basically a vice-grip. There’s a rotating ‘screw’ that tighens the vice. You rest the Nokia Lumia 1520 (or whatever) on one arm and use the other to clasp it like a claw. The rubbery bit won’t damage the screen. Note on the DT-22 the rubbery bit sometimes came off so I glued mine on permanently.
It’s fairly stable. I wouldn’t recommend running with it if you put it on a steadycam but you can definitely walk around with it as I have before. Just be careful as that’s not the intended purpose. For recording video or simply putting on a tripod this is great. It’s simple to slip in and out.
I’ve just picked up another one from Amazon as they’re pretty hard to find now (8.99GBP. It was about 20GBP when I first bought one).
There may be a potential danger of clamping to tightly that you’ll crack the screen but I don’t think the DT-22 can tighten that much. You’ll see it anyway should you give it a go.
What camera grip do you use in your phone? What about those 1520 users?
