Amazon Echo: Cortana in a Cylinder?

It’s great to see yet another entry to personal voice assistants as it strengthens the need and the competition for them.

Cortana is Microsoft’s lady, Siri for Apple and Google Now for big G.

This isn’t in a smartphone. It’s a standalone item. Essentially Cortana in a big, black toilet roll tube. All it’s meant to do is listen and do some commands.

A nice thing this has is obviously the always listening feature, soon to appear in Lumia denim but can be experienced in the Moto X and some others in G. Now. The wake word can be changed. Here it’s “Alexa”. The voice is toned down and is less computerised.

The little girl is annoying “how can it know so much, it’s so small” – no little girl, it’s rather huge.

It seems however that Amazon Echo can be connected with a tablet (see it adding an item to their shopping list).

There’s a companion app to ‘access echo from anywhere’ presumably it could eventually work without needing the Amazon Echo thing itself since it’s just a cloud service. It could be seen in other platforms.
