Riptide GP2 is available for $2.99 and it is an amazing game. Great graphics, gameplay, sound and a lot of features can be yours if you like water based, stunt filled, racing games. Best of all, Riptide GP2 is a universal app so if you buy it on Windows Phone, you also get it for Windows 8.x/10 for free!

Riptide GP2 offers many customization options as you can visually customize your rider, Hydrocraft in addition to upgrading the performance of your vehicle to give you a serious edge over the competition. You can also customize your stunt arsenal as well. Leveling up and increasing your arsenal of in-race tricks that will fill your boost meter, shaving seconds off the clock, position in the pack and bringing you one wave closer to victory.

In addition to the race affecting customizations, Riptide GP2 offers Graphics customization just like Vector Unit’s other Windows Phone game, Beach Buggy Racing.

Not only can you change the resolution of the game but you can enable or disable the graphical effects that are supported by your device. I am in full support of graphical settings just as with PC games as some developers automatically disable graphical effects that your device may be able to handle. I prefer the best looking graphics but if my device, say a Lumia 530, isn’t powerful enough to provide a smooth framerate, I’d rather have the option to disable those GPU straining effects in the hopes of a more playable and enjoyable game.

All in all, Riptide GP2 (and Beach Buggy Racing) is a Triple A effort from Vector Unit even though they have only published 2 games for Windows Phone 8.1 thus far. I am glad to see that they were willing to put in the time, effort and money to make such a great game available for Windows Phone users.

Which brings me to this:

I have seen comments where people believe that Riptide GP2 (and other games) should be free. Well…I can’t speak for any other person that has a job but I do not like to work for free. My personal view of my support for Windows Phone developers is this:

If developers financially support Windows for phones, I will financially support the developers.

I bought Riptide GP2 without reservation and will make an additional IAP as well for that simple fact.

I’m not rich by any stretch of the imagination so I am NOT saying that anyone should buy every app that comes out but if it is an app that I enjoy and can afford to support the developer, I do so. Some people may not be able to afford to do so at this time and that is why I support the idea of a free trial for every game in the Windows Store. The issue that I have is the mindset of some people who believe that games should be free and not have IAP, basically cutting off any financial support to the developers.

I have already made two IAPs in Beach Buggy racing as well. The best IAP for Beach Buggy Racing removes the green dollar requirement for races so I can now play the game without time constraints and worrying about waiting for “dollars” to replenish and it makes the game feel like a console title as I can just load the game and play. The 2x coins for life and free power-ups and a buggy were just icing on the IAP cake. Vector Unit is generous with their completely optional IAPs. Removing the time based, fun limiting factor of any game is the greatest IAP known to man in my humble opinion. I don’t like for a game to tell me to come back and play again in 10 minutes. I may only have 5 minutes left of my break and I would like to play right now!

Thankfully, Riptide GP2 is not based on a time or ticket system, you can play the game whenever you like and however many times you want to race is up to you. Thank you Vector Unit and thank you for including the IAP in Beach Buggy Racing that achieves the same thing (no time or ticket based gameplay), especially since BBR is a free game. I understand that you have to make money and I appreciate the thoughtfulness.

In the grand scheme of things, developers do not have to support Windows Phone, Windows, make it a universal apps or even include account syncing or even add customizable graphics settings. Vector Unit put some time into porting Riptide GP2 to Windows Phone and it is an amazing game.

I have also noticed that Riptide GP2 and Beach Buggy Racing both have fast app resume via Windows Phone 8.1 and they resume instantly in most situations. I’ll buy more IAPs over time in their games as I am glad to see their support of the Windows platform.

In the event that anyone didn’t know, Vector Unit consists of only 4, yes FOUR people!

Our team

One of the things people are often surprised to learn about Vector Unit is how small we are. Currently the permanent staff consists of four people. Yeah, that’s right: FOUR! So next time someone tells you their awesome new mobile game with a budget of millions of dollars and a staff of forty people, you tell them to shut up because Vector Unit makes awesome games and the whole company fits inside a Smart Car (almost).

How do we do it? Are we magic? No, we’re just ordinary people who love making games.

Go Team!!!! Great work by the fantastic four at Vector Unit.

Daniel Rubino of Windows Central writes:

Check out the trailer for the game embedded in this article, or just go and download the game to try it yourself. Unfortunately, only the Windows version has a free trial, and not the Windows Phone one, which is likely an oversight.

Riptide GP2 is also 512 MB compatible for those with entry-level Windows Phones and is a modest 64 MB in download size. Remember, if you buy it on one platform, you do not have to buy it again on the other.

Finally….how about Hydro Thunder Hurricane for Windows Phone??? My Bing Rewards free money is waiting. 😉

As always, thank you for continuing to support MyNokiaBlog!
