Nokia planning on 12 Smartphones for 2011 (40 new handset total)

Hindustantimes via Mark Guim from The NokiaBlog Reports that Nokia will be releasing 12 More smartphones in 2011. It was rumoured mid-March that there would be 20 new Symbian handsets alone but that possibly did not account for regional variants e.g. C5-03/C5-04(Nuron 2) and C7-00 and C7-00_01 (Astound). Other than handsets already seen in 2010, we haven’t had any new smartphone announcements from Nokia. It’s around late April time when we heard of the N8 officially (with much later October release).

A Nokia exec “close to development” apparently said that out of the 40 phones released in 2011, 30% (12) will be smartphones. Not an out of the ordinary number for Nokia.

“We will be launching 40 models in 2011 of which at least 30% would be smartphones”

8 are pretty much unknown to us. But four are known for definite. Yet to be announced:

  1. E6-00 – QWERTY candybar with Symbian^3 touch
  2. X7-00 – 4″ Touch only Symbian^3
  3. T7-00
  4. “N950” – Harmattan Phone, Successor to N900, Upgradable to MeeGo
  5. N8’s Camera Successor
  6. At least one Windows Phone Handset (as Elop tries to get one in for 2011, with MASS WP in 2012)

All important question – When? After Mid April. Perhaps that rumoured April 12 release (or post that date) may come true? If so, that would mean possible May availability. Whether this launch will announce exciting handsets or the still-won’t-die Symbian^1 is another matter.

“D Shivakumar, vice president and managing director of Nokia India, said things will hot up  after mid-April.”
