Video: Nokia GEM – touchscreen everywhere official Nokia Concept.
Just this morning we got around to finally posting about that new twisty Nokia phone, sort of like morph with some features and nanotech aspects. It was a very radical departure from what we see at Nokia and it’s fantastic again to see more concepts in design and UI in action with the new Nokia GEM concept.

There are a lot of new interaction methods we haven’t seen (or at least I haven’t) before. Some polishing some just very new and innovative altogether. I’ve always wanted side touch gestures. Now if that’s a touch screen you can replicate all sorts of buttons.
You’re really going to have to watch the video to take it in.

Like a gem, it has many facets. Diamond in the rough? What could refinement and polishing do? What’s the time frame to see this come true?
I think the 710 design would be more gem like. This kind of shape kinda looks like an elongated skull or beer glass – though the point was to afford that fitting-in-hand that would allow those side icons.
What’s with all the concept Nokias?
This concept release is timed to coincide with Nokia’s celebration of 25 years of disruptions in the mobile phone industry and is a declaration of intent that they aim to continue to produce such gamechangers.
And it’s a confirmation of Nokia’s commitment to their corporate research centre, which has played a leading role in setting GSM, 3G and many other standards and technologies adopted across the industry.
Watch out for more Gems celebrating NRC over the next few weeks.
