JPEG standard to support 12 bit colour depth and lossless format

Comments from photographers reacting to the recent news that the JPEG standard now supports 12-bit colour depth and lossless format as a HUGE deal.

Instead of sharing ‘RAW’ files or multilayered ‘TIFF’ files, photographers can choose to share lossless JPEG that some say could rival RAW.

“This is major news for archival purposes. JPEG(along with TIFF) is one of the main storage formats, simply due to it’s ubiquity, which lends it a certain durability. The inclusion of lossless compression and greater bit depth just makes it so much better. And far more efficient in terms of space than TIFF”

There are still advantages of the RAW formats that the likes of the 1020 and 1520 can shoot in.

RAW isn’t a lossless compression format for images, it’s something much bigger than that. This new format doesn’t store the information required to correct white balance errors for instance.

For most people that use their camera phone for a quick snap, this won’t mean a lot, but for the budding amateur mobile photographer, this might be some great news.

I like what was highlighted in the screenshot below. Whenever I see comments belittling mobile photography, I want to comment about the 808 and 1020. Thankfully, there are folks in the know already doing this.
