No PureView: Oppo Find 7 50MP camera is a software trick. Four 13MP camera stitched shots

MNB IMG_0580Lumia 1020 vs 808 pureview nokiaWhen news of the 50MP Oppo Find 7 and its beastly specs, we wanted to know whether it had a sensor size to challenge the likes of the Nokia Lumia 1020 or the Nokia 808 PureView.

As it turns out, there isn’t a 50MP camera on board. It’s a software trick. On top of that, it’s DUAL LED and no OIS. This is the kind of thing VGA camera smartphones used to do to make a megapixel shot. Is it fair to tout this as the first camera to take 50MP photos? What if someone makes an app that stitches multiple 38MP shots?

It’s an interesting way to market their imaging capabilities. It’ll have its limitations but its great to see where digital processing can take imaging. At least on paper.

You have to pick a mode called ‘superzoom’. It takes a bunch of photos relatively quickly (though still having to wait to process) and stitches 4 images together. How will that work for low light or moving shots? Perhaps it won’t. Perhaps you’ll stick with your 13mp shots.

It’s quite the reverse for Nokia, who uses PureView in a few ways. The main 41MP huge sensor takes a large number of organic and real pixels. From there, it condenses those pixels for oversampling to get super pixels.

On the upside it does mean a slimmer device for ‘all them pixels’. Steve isn’t all that impressed with the ‘small’ sensor. This zoom is no #zoomreinvented with zooming only AFTER the shot is taken.

I guess it shouldn’t say it ‘TAKES’ a 50mp shot but it ‘MAKES’ a 50MP shot. Imagine the processing power needed to do the same with Nokia’s 41MP sensors. Anyone ready for 152MP photos?

Like Nokia, at the end of the day, it’s all about quality. More kudos for Oppo if this solution works for them and makes great pictures.

Cheers Alvester for the tip!
