Video: 3D sensor demo on WP8

Odd. Have you seen this video? It was posted a month ago and it shows off 3D sensor capabilities on Windows Phone. Even the official WP google+ page shared it back then.

Whilst we’ve learnt that such a (or a similar?) thing was developed by Nokia, it’s strange to see this on a HTC. Perhaps this is separate to what Nokia is developing? This says this was done by Microsoft Research

In a way, it kinda reminds me of leap motion. It’s very sensitive to the depth and position of the finger.

This prototype sees the sensor mounted on an acrylic frame. It’s intriguing looking at the way the finger can move in a 3D space. Think of stuff like this on a tablet or phablet? Pretty neat. On the Go Minority Report.

Check out the 3D gestures! Whilst the sensing technology might be Nokia or someone else, Microsoft definitely has the know-how with kinect to implement this in a meaningful way. It has the potential to be less of a gimmick like air gestures and truly something that could revolutionise the way we interact with devices.

Imagine being able to ‘air type’  on a tablet once the sensor becomes that sensitive? No obstructing the screen with a keyboard.
