Microsoft Research working on phone battery life that would last a week

Before anyone says anything that Nokia’s already been there and done that with their simpler phones, this is about smartphones. With the likes of the Nokia Lumia 1520, we’re finally getting battery life for an all day use with no worry about what you’re doing. At least that’s how it has been for me.

MS is thinking, not of ways to revolutionise the battery itself but alter and optimise power efficiency. One idea is for two separate batteries. One optimised for high power tasks and the other for the less power hungry activities, including standby. Microsoft Research already has a prototype which could lead to up to 50% improvement.

There’s also software optimisations to explore.  ‘E-Loupe’ allows for the policing of apps that consume a lot of power when a user is not using them. The activity could then be paused or slowed.

Why not explore improvements to the battery technology itself too? Come at it from all angles?
