Millions of Euros paid by Nokia to blackmailer to protect an encryption key of the Symbian phones
According to mtv.fi, Nokia paid millions of euros to a blackmailer in order to protect an encryption key of the Symbian devices. This took place around 2007 and the National Bureau of Investigation says it is still on going.
The blackmailer got hold of the Symbian Signed code. This would have meant that phones would not be able to limit what was installed to just Nokia approved apps. We are reminded that back in 2007, 50% of SMARTPHONES sold were Nokia. Jeeez.
Nokia paid the ransom and it was agreed that the key would not be misused.
The blackmailer was paid in physical money, kept in a bag which was then left in a parking lot amusement park in Tampere. Police however lost the blackmailer and also the money.
