Nokia 3310’s kindred spirit: Oppo R5 smashing Apple and nails it
NOKIA is the name for robustness and durability. So much so that the interweb has the Nokia 3310 Meme and basically, Nokia is synonymous for build quality. When the Lumia 900 was announced, we saw a video of it being used as a hammer to knock a nail into a piece of wood. Excellent stuff.
He’s hammering it with the glass side.
In the very last video, we see Oppo’s R5 doing exactly the same thing, as well as a few other durability ‘tests’.
It looks really slim whilst opting for a camera bump (hurrah N8, 808, 1020 and now even iPhone)
With regards to camera bumps, this kinda looks like an ugly spare lego piece. Hopefully, a 13MP Sony Exmor sensor will be worth having the bulge. Of the few reviews I’ve encountered, it’s apparently not that impressive in terms of quality.
Considering where Apple went with bendgate this year on their slim iPhone 6, it’s great to see someone focus on durability whilst maintaining a sleek look. Watching PocketNow’s hands on back in October, one of the things Jaime repeats is that it feels substantial in the hand.
Note that the R5 is a ridiculous 4.85MM thin. What? 2000mAh with a 5.2″ screen though. Battery life is apparently terrible and awful. 1 1/2 to 2 hours of screen on time. 2 hours! 2 hours!
I think Oppo wanted to achieve something different with the R5. Battery life is one of those that I wouldn’t as a user want to lose out on (my note 4 is pretty dreadful after the 1520’s multiple days-off-charger perks). Though having said that, if there were out for total slimness, and given that the camera isn’t all that, maybe they should have got a more basic, slimmer camera too? (Are those even available?)
It’s so thin, there’s no headphone jack. But I think it comes with an adapter that sticks onto the MicroUSB? Reminds me of the Nokia Pop Port 3.5mm adapter I had to buy for my 7610.
:/
Anyway, the video:
Cheers Alvester for the tip!
