MKBHD explains smartphone camera quality

For Nokia fans, those using the likes of the N8, 808 or even 1020 it’s really surprising to realise how far advanced your smartphone camera was at the time compared to the rest of the competition.

MKBHD explains image quality in smartphones. Annoyingly the 808/1020 isn’t really explored properly regarding:

1. Having a huge sensor
2. Having tons of pixels
3. Having super pixel with pixel binning
4. Having xenon flash (MKBHD said he avoids flash usually. That’s cos they were all pants)
5. Zeiss optics

Immediately the whole more megapixels isn’t better and HTC’s ultrapixels tried to make better pixels (but for those who have forgotten – weren’t HTC’s ultrapixel phone camera always at the bottom of camera shootouts? Because why? Because AWFUL that’s why).

Numbers totally don’t mean much. That’s why it’s actually incredibly mind boggling to remember the white paper on PureView and how on paper and in real life, it was a beast theoretically and in action.

Again, imagine if Nokia kept on at it.

I haven’t tried a 950XL yet but the image samples look really good considering the different direction Lumia is going with regards to imaging. Much of the old Nokia team still contributes to making some amazing images in a more compact package.
