N900 Video: Send & Receive MMS (using fMMS)

Update: The latest and final one stop shop for all your questions regarding fMMS can now be found at my new blog (thetekblogger.com), the post can be found here: http://thetekblogger.com/2010/05/27/fmms-1-x-for-nokia-n900-f-a-q/

Ok, I’ve had the fMMS application on my phone for a little while and just recently worked out how to get it configured for my phone so thought I’d share it with you all.

Note: This application is in the extras-devel application catalogue so as always be careful installing anything from there…you don’t want to mess up your phone.

(sorry for the varying quality…still getting used to my camera and video editor)

I hope this has helped and I just wanted to add a couple of things:

  • Although I said in the video you can’t add another APN, I just found out you can using fAPN from the extras-testing catalogue.
  • Always enter numbers in international format, i.e. +447700000000 (Some times when people have selected contacts from phonebook, fMMS does not select the correct one so type the number manually until it is fixed)
  • When you receive an MMS and fMMS is not open, you will need to just tap on the “new message” popup then load fMMS to open it.
  • You have to manually switch to GSM and make sure it is not on WiFi when you are trying to send/open a message otherwise it will just never be able to send/receive and the application will freeze.
  • Currently only images are supported.

the application is for sending pictures only currently not videos although possibly in a later release. I think nokia are working on a proper MMS for the phone so just keep a look out.

I have put in the settings as above but keep getting the message:
    “Sending failed:
    Error: 110 Connection timed out
Please make sure your APN settings are correct”

I cant figure out what im doing wrong. I am on pay as you go on T-Mobile UK.

It says above: “You have to manually switch to GSM and make sure it is not on WiFi when you are trying to send/open a message otherwise it will just never be able to send/receive and the application will freeze.”

If I disconnect the wireless I still get the same error message…

    • February 24, 2010 at 7:10 pm | #9

have you entered the settings for the mms exactly as shown above? and have you manually selected the MMS profile when you try to send a MMS message?

        Hi.

I have manually connected to the APN, sent a test message to my o2 phone.

Tmobile charges me 20p for this but I get the error as above.

However, my o2 recieves the mms message…. Should I be concerned about the error message as long as they go through?

        • February 24, 2010 at 9:54 pm | #11

it is still in development so most likely just a part which is not perfected! If you are able to please goto the link below and post the bug report so the developer can work to resolve it, if for any reason you are unable to, let me know and I will post for you.

    Hi (llaadd),
U ve done a nice job by sharing ur intelligent-solution among N900 users(appreciated)!
I’m a N900 user too..got no interest in MMS service..but yes..I listen to music and wanna set-up some good base but unfortunately there is no equalizer in maemo5.. if u think u can solve this problem so i will b really thankful to U..just asking the solution if u got..i mean, if u dont have the solution for this so m not asking u to spend ur time for me personally!

    Regards,
    MJ

    • March 8, 2010 at 7:55 pm | #13

if you have the extras-devel on your N900 try installing the “symfonie” application, it’s a Music Player with Equalizer, I have no idea how good it is as it shows an error when I try to install (something conflicting) but you can try on yours, and as always be careful downloading anything from the Extras-devel library, (it’s in the multimedia section).

Hope that helps! (lemme know how you get on)

    • March 9, 2010 at 9:56 am | #15

have you manually selected the network connection and not on WiFi? do this by:
      1) pressing where the clock/battery level/network signal is at the top left
      2) select “Internet connection”
      3) select your network’s MMS setting which you should have saved before.

Let me know if this helps

Excellent work llaadd works Great Thankyou for this, im on O2 Contract but have not ticked the proxy box but all is working fine, would you recommend ticking this box or just leave it be if its working ok?

    • March 9, 2010 at 6:21 pm | #18

as you have probably noticed I’m on o2 as well, the MMS usually does need the proxy settings, so probably would recommend as it may cause issues down the line! but if you keep like that and it carries on working let me know!

      Thanks for the heads up!

Hi i need a help again, i just want to ask how to use the secondary camera? is it just for video call or you can use it also to capture pictures and videos?

    • March 10, 2010 at 6:17 pm | #20

you can download an application called something like “mirror” which just allows you to view your self through it, but don’t know of any that allow the front facing to take pictures.

    Hey Guyz !!!

I am facing a very wired problem regarding sending MMS. I have already installed fMMS and i am able to receive MMS but when i was trying to send MMS to other number , other number got my MMS but there was no photo or object. I tried so many ways but i cant get any solution over this. Plz any one help me to solve this problem. :-(

    • May 24, 2010 at 4:46 pm | #34

it may be issue with the person receiving the image (only image is supported by fMMS). could be either:
      1) Receiving phone does not have settings – best way to test their phone is to send an MMS to themselves, that way you can test if sending and receiving is working. If this works, try sending to and receiving from someone else. For settings see above or contact your network.
      2) The image you are trying to send is too big – some devices have limit on image size which can be received, this can be limit on hight and width and/or limit on file size, i.e. max 512KB, try sending file in “small” size settings on fMMS
      3) hopefully it’s not this but it could be just that your device or the receiver’s device is faulty but this is hard to test!
      ]
      Good luck
