It was leaked a while ago, but now it’s official.

“We are introducing the new Nokia C5, an affordable smartphone optimized for social networking and sharing. More details will follow.”

Nokia

I wonder exactly how affordable this is. Sub £80?

So…is this a death to the NUMBERS only cheapo/mid-range Nokias with unmemorable names? (not that another series to remember is any less memorable)

Update: Features list confirmed from Nokia Conversations:

  • Free Ovi Maps turn by turn navigation
  • 135EUR – direct conversion, 122GBP, 180USD
  • 3.2mp
  • 2.2″ QVGA
  • Symbian S60 3rd Edition
  • 12mm thin and 46mm across (and 112mm high)
  • 89.3 g
  • Stainless steel body
  • 12 HOURS of TALK TIME
  • 3.5mm jack
  • expandable memory with microSD

In response to Nokia Naming Convention (I can’t post comment – keep getting database error)

I think Cseries > NUMBERS (might as well be a barcode)
Ideally for naming conventions (especially for flagship[s]) they should have a NAME!
Build on the reputation of that NAME with future models.
e.g. Pre – Pre Plus
e.g. iPhone – 3G – 3GS. Different phones but reputation keeps improving despite previous phone’s misgivings.
even N95 – N95 8GB
Though I’m still wanting a simple 2 syllable NAME (at least for the flagship). It needs to roll of the tongue like melted butter. Something easily pronounced, something MEMORABLE.
Codes- e.g. Nseries N97/N79/N96/N95/N93, so easy for geeks/bloggers/tech peeps but not so for your average consumer.
Previous RANT on Nokia naming:
Looking forward to the N9 eNnine
Build on reputation, expand the number of people that know about that model (it may be a different device but same moniker will make mind share penetration easier)
