Video: JoikuSpot Premium Nokia N900 – Turn your N900's 3G connection into a WiFi HotSpot!

JoikuSpot was a much loved app on Symbian OS, allowing its users to share their mobile data over the phone’s WiFi, effectively turning it into a WiFi hotspot for other WiFi enabled handsets to connect e.g. a laptop.

The Maemo Beta was available a couple of days ago, now the Premium version is available for the N900 and here’s a video demo by the MaemoItalia crew. (It is, understandably in Italian, but you can get the gist of what it does. More info from JoikuSpot themselves)

This is great if you’re out and about and your laptop may not have inbuilt mobile data connection. Or if your internet provider randomly dies at inappropriate times. Or if you haven’t got wireless internet and you’ve got devices that have unused WiFi features.

There are alternatives like using One  Touch Access cable tethering. But with JoikuSpot, you can have multiple simultaneous connections.

Speed of course is going to be entirely dependent on your mobile data speeds (network/signal factor). You don’t necessarily have to be on 3G/3.5G. Also make sure that you’ve got unlimited internet/generous bandwidth allowance as you can easily rack up huge data charges when using a phone for your computer’s internet connection
