Ovi – One Touch Access, Tethering the Nokia N97 to your PC

| August 4, 2009 | Comments (14)

My broadband just stopped working. After getting past the frustration, I’d normally attempt to fix it (myself or get a mate to do it). Instead, I decided to try using the N97 as a modem. (Note: this isn’t specific to the N97).

In Ovi Suite, there’s a service called “One Touch Access” and it really is. I connected the cable, set up O2 as the operator and I was back online using O2′s 3G (and their paltry attempt at unlimited internet).

N97 O2

Apparently you can connect over bluetooth, (and that would have been my preferred option as that means I won’t be relient on having the cable), but no luck on several attempts.

Successive connections over cable are much faster – just hook up the phone, launch OTA and it automatically connects you to the internet.

Now if only UK mobile tarrifs had decent internet allowances. (Fair usage policies just means a brilliant way to lie to customers. It’s like an all you can eat buffet, but you can only come up and fill 2 plates after which you’ll only be allowed to get crumbs)

are u moaning about the speed or was there a limit to what you could download? (I don’t think officially you are allowed to use the phone for tethering)

I actually ran my PC off my o2 phone (N96 at the time) for over a week when my net went down…it wasn’t the fastest in the world but it did me well and it was free.

Just be glad you don’t have an iPhone, you have to pay extra for tethering! to be more precise, the same costs as if you took out o2′s mobile broadband packages.

Sorry – to clarify, I was complaining about the “unlimited” internet which after you go over your “fair usage” threshold, they severely slow down your connection to prevent you going even further.

O2′s got 200/250mb which is really nothing unless I only browse Mobile sites or only use Opera Mini. I think the other networks have slightly better allowances, but all under 1gb.

Speed wasn’t a painful crawl. Better than having no internet :) .

Hey…i have a 6710 Navigator wit the OVI suite

When i use one touch access it does the count down to connect but once it starts connecting it immediately disconnects.

Does any one know what the problem is?

I use to use a N81 and a N91 on the PC suite and it worked fine.

  4. Russell says:

I had this exact problem. In my case it was that the telephony service was disabled (I disable services I do not need, but this one is necessary for internet connection).

Go Start-Run, type “services.msc” and make sure the “Telephony” service is running.

    Hope this helps,
    Russell.

  6. [...] This has been one of the saving graces of my N97 and it’s faithfully efficient too on the N900. The ability to save my butt when Virgin Media at the most inappropriate of times malfunctions is priceless. I have a lot of problem with this Noki when i connect it to PC. I connect it propertly and it is working but it is very very slow. In my contry i comepred the internet speed on PC with Nokia n97 and HTC Diamond. With diamond i reached 3,6 Mb/s, but with this N97 just 1,2Mb/s. On the same teritory, same operator and same sim card. Both had full signal, so the problem is obviuslly in Nokia. Do you have any idea?
