Pic: Nokia MeeGo Phone – Ultimate Convergence Device?

| June 6, 2010 | Comments (26)

jedibeeftrix shares an interesting post, asking whether Nokia and MeeGo tablet phone could be the ultimate convergence device. In the post is an interesting render of what MeeGo phone could look like (updated with better render)

A wonderful wish list of core specifications include:

  • At least 4″, WVGA (the standard of Nokia’s first 3 Maemo tablets) AMOLED screens
  • Dual Core ARM Cortex A9 (Nokia already confirmed first MeeGo phone from Nokia will be on ARM architecture)
  • No hardware keyboard, rely on good capacitive multitouch (so that interface is truly all built for touch)
  • Must be slim so a 4″ heft is more acceptable.

jedibeeftrix also wants Nokia to open up Ovi Store to other manufacturers, like Intel is with AppUp.

I totally agree with that and the specs wishlist. I’d also like to have some decent N8 like imaging (w/ xenon!) – hopefully that won’t push the thickness too much. MeeGo phone needs to be overwhelming and also bring something new to the table that would separate it from other ‘hypersmartphones’. Glorious Nokia imaging is one fantastic advantage MeeGo phone could benefit from.

What’s on your wish list for MeeGo phone?

    amazing!Nokia the best))

  2. Jim says:

actually a screen larger than 4” is not that good. I like to travel as light as I can so if the phone is very big I will not buy it, no matter what are the specs.

    • Jay Montano says:

MeeGo will probably have variety of form factors. There maybe more compact 3.5″ – 3.7″ and those with larger 4″-4.3″ as well as the tablets, so there’ll be choice if you want ultra portable or big screens.

  3. rudeboi18 says:

Thin factor sounds amazing but 4inch?! Why are these phones coming out big like the Nokia Communicator. I thought we were getting away from these large devices. Just because it’s touchscreen does that mean it’s okay to have it.

    • Jay Montano says:

4-4.3″ Is probably gonna be the upper limit (for next 12 months anyway) for acceptable screen sizes.

The phone doesn’t have to be all that large, just minimise the space wasted in bezel.

With competitors pushing bigger screens at the high end, E.G. HTC Evo 4G, Samsung Galaxy S, It would be good to compete there too.

We started moving away from miniature phones again with enjoyment of rich multimedia that’s bettered by bigger screens.

Slowly and surely, market does seem to be welcoming bigger screens…2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8, 3.2, 3.5 now 3.7. 4″ may be new standard by 2011.

The bigger screens make internet, video watching and games entirely fresher experience.

I wouldn’t go as far as Dell’s 5″ streak or Sony Ericssons 5.5″ rumoured mammoth. Unlike phones that are always with you, those would have to be something you choose to bring, like the 9.7″ iPad.

But that’s just me and the eyes of a geek.

  4. eh says:

No hardware keyboard would be a showstopper for me, unless they can really come up with an amazing virtual one. It is just so much easier to type with real keys.

  5. Cod3rror says:

The first Meego phone WILL have a 4″ screen, hardware QWERTY, 64GB storage and it will use a Cortex A8 at 1GHz.

  6. rudeboi18 says:

If this be the case for having 4 inch screens as Jay said then I guess it would make since. Sad though that I spent my hard earn money for two N900 devices that I will have to sell to buy a Meego device. Really love the N900 in found it to be a awesome device.

  7. Inokia says:

I doubt the meego phone use a bettee camere than n8

i also doubt nokia uses cortex a9

    i aslo doubt they use 4 “,

the picture above is ugly as hell

  8. Cod3rror says:

The first Meego phone will also have a 12MP camera with dual LEDs.

  9. quagmire says:

4″ screen is the max i would go. played with a htc evo4g and its monstrous. Also, the thin bezel may look good and allow a bigger screen, however, it looks like if you drop this thing (evo 4g) you would damage the screen.

also if i read correctly, arm a9 chips wont be shipping to customers until Q1 2011 so no A9 chips this year.

on a side note, give me my n82 successor nokia! lol

  10. jedibeeftrix says:

    better render provided.

  11. jedibeeftrix says:

    my thanks, yes it is.

  12. mrpierr says:

Well actually I hope that nokia will include a hardware keyboard!
because I prefer those above an onscreen one, but a 4″ capactive screen would be nice!
and an other camera not that standard 5 megapixel carl zeiss but rather something like the 8mp (n86) or the 12mp (n8) with xenon offcourse!

  13. Rob says:

For me I’ll only use an on screen keyboard out of necessity or ehwn they fully utilise multitouch so as you can have multiple key functionality on one layout such as shift/letter for caps etc.

My biggest gripe about on screen keyboards is the continuous switching between letter/number/symbol mode.

Maybe I have missed some good ones but have seen a few.
N900 user myself and though I instantly saw the drawbacks in the new one, and saw the post about the landscape one, I just shrugged because for me typing is done on somethign wider than it is tall and has key combinations.

  14. Rob says:

Note to self: Proof read when posting about typing. Even after a few.

  15. keithlum says:
