The Nokia N8 is shipping !!!

| September 30, 2010 | Reply

reminds me of fast food place :-D

Yes folks Nokia early this morning (why on earth I am up this early 6.30 am !!!) announced that the Nokia n8 is shipping just before the Q3 cut off date, so technically they did manage to release it on time. Devices have left China and Finland to be flown around the world to people that have pre ordered (maybe I should have :-( ) anyway Nokia goes on to say this is the highest pre order of any Nokia device before so I am thinking that people that have not pre ordered might be waiting a considerable time longer, I guess time will tell.  They also go on to provide pictures from the factory.

One of those beauties could be yours

let us know if you have received your device

  4. GordonH says:

5M sounds too optimistic. But I do hope the N8 brings back Nokia’s image.

    • IMarius says:

yea i love nokia but 5m , that would make it one of the best selling phones already , i am sure it will be but i think it would take a fair few weeks to hit that number

  5. AL says:

I’m curious to know if the Models shipped in the EU and US are made in Finland or China?

    • Anton says:

      alex68 :
USA and Asian market N8s are made in Peking (Nokia’s own factory, instead of foxconn).
Europe, Africa, Middle-east in Salo, Finland.

      • AL says:

Thanks Anton for that reference. Though I do remember the E71 sold in the US as being made in Finland. Maybe depends on the model and the bulk of orders.

Russian Nokia flagship store release of the N8

    • IMarius says:

i call fake , cause of course people would not cue up for a Nokia phone ;) (sarcastic-o-metre activated)

      • alex68 says:

Yeah, actually I can also provide a fake picture (for those Nokia haters) that a Nokia flagship store in Shanghai was full of Chinese testing and checking N8 a few days ago…

  10. VV says:

Hi everyone! It looks like Nokia really “loves” its US customers and is really serious about making a “good” impression in the US market.

    http://www.informationweek.com/news/global-cio/trends/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=227501028

I preordered it in August.I should’ve just waited for Amazon to bring it.I still love the phone itself but these delays are getting to me.Congrats to the lucky guys who’ll be getting the N8 soon. And even though I’m pissed – Go Nokia!

    • Stylinred says:

that’s pretty old news… when Nokia announced a few week delay nokiausa pushed their date back to end of october on their ordering page

i agree the wait can be brutal but this is what happens when a Hot Ticket item gets released

Like the Playstation 3 when it came out… you couldn’t find one if your life depended on it

      • VV says:

I know they changed the date to “end of October” a while back but I was still hoping that since they were talking about global shipping to those who preordered, US customers will be getting it soon too.Oh well..Patience is a virtue. And I don’t have it.But I’ll still wait for my shiny N8.I like it too damn much :)

    • alex68 says:

Don’t worry. When it is available for the USA market, there will be more applications for the USA consumers. It is actually a good thing. Just be patient!

  11. VV says:

Oh and I also wanted to say that I’ve been reading this blog for a while and it’s by far the best source of information on Nokia N8 and the Symbian 3 devices.Respect to all those involved with the site and I like reading people’s comments on here.Keep it up guys!

    http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/nokia-n8-692448/review

v.v.negative, how they managed to mess up the video and only claim the camera is ok is beyond me

    • chfyfx says:

My impression from this review: the reviewer really liked the device but he is kind of afraid to admit it. It is a very weird feeling.

For instance, when he talks about OVI Map, he thinks it is better than google map. Then, he says it is not the best in the market, which does not make sense to me.

However, he does pointed out the pros and cons. A few things right on target: Bad Keyboard, OK Browser, No Pinch zoom on Map

I think the only thing Nokia needs to fix is the Keyboard and Browser. Then, it would sells so well. Please, Nokia, bring PR2.0 before January.

      • alex68 says:

According to my source, upgrade PR will happen before christmas. New web browser is included. No idea about the keyboard.

Multi-touch is not an issue here. I have used pinch and zoom on map very often. It works very well with OVI map. It also has voice navigation and other features that Google does not have at all.

The reviewer lacks enough knowledge about ovi map features, i think.

        • chfyfx says:

In fact, I think he is really knowledgable about Nokia device, but he is not in love with the OS. It is a good review overall if you ignore the weird negative tone.

      • IMarius says:

the battery thing really pees me off in that review , first , you should not have to replace you battery any time soon , maybe after a year if you want to do it , you can just unscrew two screws , he said a very particular screwdriver,

i mean they are small screws but noting special and i think that fact that nokia has stated this wont void your warranty then whats the problem ?

        • chfyfx says:

he was just been very picky… he is in love with other OS. it is hard for him to be just.

        • alex68 says:

According to my source, the battery is supposed to last for 3 years by Nokia. It means no sooner than 3 years, the user needs to change the battery. If the user wants to reset the phone, there is a key to do that and no need to pull out the battery as before.

    • Stylinred says:

that’s a strange review… he makes some valid points and yet contradicts himself like when he criticizes the N8 for having many useless entertainment based apps out of the box (ruining the experience?) yet goes on to say that the N8 is a media device with some “power” to it when describing the hdmi/music, video player… then you would think the phone should have many media based apps…

it just seems like, at times, he’s criticizing for the sake of it

its not to say he does nothing but criticize the phone he seems to actually like it and he has what seems to be valid critiques but at times you’re left with a “what?”

      • IMarius says:

but having a go for it not having any good games ? like he actually lists that under things he dislike , all he had to do was go to the ovi store and download one of the better games for it

      • alex68 says:

I have the same feeling that he’s criticizing for the sake of it. It sounds like criticism is part of his review mission…

  13. AL says:

I thought there was pinch to zoom on maps. I could’ve sworn i have seen it demoed somewhere. I think with any new product you need some time to adjust to the various features offered by the OS. He might be use to Android or iOS but with enough hands-on time i believe Nokia’s device will be a joy to have!

    • Jim says:

multi touch on maps will appear by christmas. what you saw was a beta version

      • Roger Johnson says:

The version with pinch and zoom – Maps 3.06 – is available for download NOW from Nokia’s betalabs just google it.

There’s lots of other improvements too.

Note that pinch and zoom is only supported on S^3 devices as that’s the only OS version that supports it.

      • alex68 says:

The retail map is 3.0.4. It is very close to 3.0.6, I think.

It certainly supports pinch and zoom. It has many views (ie Map, Satellite and 3D view )and night mode. It is also integrated with some info network ie weather, event, restaurants and city guid It can give the info of traffic flow. Many of these features that Google Map don’t have at all.

  14. Paul says:

There is pinch to zoom on maps, it seems v badly researched. Or put another nokia have not done a good enough job promoting it. Think how well apple push tech thats years behind (facetime)

    • Rant says:

Wasn’t that only on 3.06 (beta)? Don’t know which version shipped with the N8 but could very well be still the older version without it.

  15. Rant says:

    And; http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-phones/nokia-n8-review-50000971/

Another review, same tone, same kind of verdict.

    • alex68 says:

People should bear that most of the software things/issues can be improved with later firmware updates but hardware capability will stay fixed forever.

    • Lyka says:

I get the feeling that the bashers are rushing the negative-ish reviews out…

    • Raj says:

Those picture they took using N8 looks so awful compare to iPhone. I am not saying that Camera is bad, but i am saying that CNET dont know how to take pictures.

      • Rant says:

Check the pics they have over at Engadget. I don’t really see where the excellence of those preview shots have gone.
Yes, the iPhone’s pictures are unnaturel, but in terms of sharpness I’m not impressed by the N8.
But then again, even a bad photographer can f&%& up with a $10,000 DSLR.

        • Raj says:

yeah I just checked them. they look really awfull compare to what i saw on earlier pictures. Hopefully Jay post his review soon so i can see that engadget is wrong.

      • Roger Johnson says:

Err, anyone can take bad pics with any device. I’ve seen amazing pics with a released device, here: http://thehandheldblog.com/2010/09/30/nokia-n8-review-camera-includes-75-camera-samples/

and what’s more the pics taken with earlier firmware still stand.

SERIOUSLY FOLKS – some people are out to do a demolition job on the N8. They are THAT addicted to iPhone/Android and hate Nokia THAT much.

        Hard to believe but true.

    • Jim says:

actually I found it a fair review. the S3 interface is to rigid. it was designed for non touch phones. it will be gone is S4 but until then ios and android have a better touch interface. at the core Symbian is a good OS, but require another make-up. that’s the reason why I won’t buy the N8 and wait until 2011 for dual core cpus phone. by then S^4 and meego will be done.

      • Rant says:

I must agree with you there, S3 is more like a loyalist OS. An OS that is supposed to keep the customers Nokia has. S4 is meant to go head on with iOS and Android. So those reviews aren’t much of a surprise.

      • Roger Johnson says:

And I’m going to disagree. Symbian 4 beats iPhone, AAndroid, RIM, and WinPho hands down easily. It’s the perfect balance of power and simplicity.

Sorry if you need something to be negative here, but S^3 is fantastic – and incidentally that’s what all the reviews are saying from the people who’ve actually used it.

        • Raj says:

S*4 hasnt been even released yet other than some screenshots. You cant come to conclusion. But I am sure it will be better than other OS.

        • Rant says:

What I mean is that S3 is supposed to be an OS that retains marketshare and nog to gain marketshare.
You must admit that a lot has remained the same within the OS. Only with S4 the ‘big’ change will happen.
And I’m not against Nokia, not at all. Currently own a N97 Mini and thinking of upgrading to a N8.

  16. David says:

Do we know if it supports A2DP & AVRCP via Bluetooth?
So the N8 can be controlled remotly via a bluetooth headset?

  17. Aaron says:

These reviewers are all fucking morons. They keep complaining about Symbian ^3 and how its not the most revolutionary thing mankind has ever witnessed. Nokia has always said that ^3 was gonna be evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but I guess these so-called journalists weren’t aware of that. In their minds, if it’s not just like Android or iOS, it’s shit.

    • Rant says:

They do adress some points that are valid; for instance I thought the Cnet reviewer adressed some issues with the touch input in the homescreens. It doesn’t give the crisp feedback you expect when using it in other menu’s. To me that is valid criticism. Yes, S3 is compared to the likes of Android and iOS, bu does that make someone a bad journalist?
But they could have left out the negative tone in the reviews, and played with the device a bit more than just half a day after release before writing their verdict.

  18. Raj says:

When can USA customer expect N8 delivery?

  19. MAYUR says:

Hey, Whoever has nokia n8 can anyone temme, how to receive incoming call in lock. Is it SCREEN SLIDER like other nokia tocuh phones or it is normal “ACCEPT” or “REJECT” in LOCK MODE…. plz do reply

    • alex68 says:

I try to answer your question.

When the phone is locked and receives a call, the screen is auto-unlocked and two buttons “Accept” in green and “Reject” in red are displayed. There is a risk if the phone is in pocket or bag, you may accidentally reject or answer the call that is not supposed. Actually the risk also exists with physical “ACCEPT” or “REJECT” buttons as well.

  20. NeNoRmAl says:

Nokia shipped more than 1 Million N8 in the first two days??

    Alex68, is that true???

    • alex68 says:

To be honest, I don’t know the exact number this time. But I know there were quite many ready sets and they just needed to flush the firmware so Nokia is able to ship quite a lot when it started shipping.

  21. vicehybrid says:

…on could anyone please tell us about the batterylife, iv warned nokia once too many times that if the battery sucks then im pulling out.
…south afrika should get this device by 2021 kikikikiki.

    • alex68 says:

I can tell you the battery life is exceptional excellent, compared to fruit and android phones. It can last normally 2-3 days with normal usage, eg. talking on phone, mailing internet surfing, listening music and gaming (but I don’t do the rest 2 things too much). Once I used public transport and I watched movie for 1 hour. Surprisingly, it consums really very little battery.

  22. Duncan says:

According to Nokia USA website, the N8 ships next week!!!!
